I'm beginning to wonder, do people even research their own hobbies?

Yaoi is not, I repeat, is not gay porn meant for men. Yaoi is a women's genre. I now direct you to some required reading for anyone who claims to be a yaoi or shounen ai fan.

I should probably mention here that I'm not against boys liking yaoi. I'm just appalled by people's lack of knowledge on something they claim to be obsessed with and love.

Yaoi is not simply gay porn, it is a wide and varied genre ranging from the hard core to the very soft and fluffy. It is a genre that is mostly created by women, for women, but really, everyone can enjoy it. Saying that boys can't like yaoi because it's a shoujo genre is like telling girls that they can't watch shounen anime like FMA and GW! Most girls discovered yaoi through shounen fan works, we would be lost without it!

Girls are free to love and obsess over shounen just as boys are free to love and obsess over yaoi. I just wish that people would actually take the time to learn about what they claim they love so much before they run around spouting common misconceptions and other such false information. After all, this is a yaoi and shounen ai guild, dont you think you should at least be familiar with the terms and the origins of the genre? It only makes sense.

yaoi is made for girls by girls.... why shouldn't girls be obsessed with it?

lota yaoi is also made by guys o.o;

and i know a heck of a lot of gay guys irl who go nuts for yaoi ^_^;

The guys who make it are just marketting, most of the men who make yaoi's aren't gay themselves. =P Like the male actors in brokeback mountain aren't gay just because they made a movie about it.

------

I'm not as knowledgeable as ForChan is on thie subject, but me, her, and LadyNox have been around I think 8-10 YEARS in the Fandom of Yaoi/Shounen Ai/Slash. It's been warped by the new generation quite a bit (Emo Boys/The sudden surge of homosexual youth that wasn't as pronounced before, for one)

Yaoi does not mean Gay. They are not the same term, Gay does not translate to Yaoi in japanese, nor does Yaoi translate to Gay in English. (Never mind that it 'actually' is that shortened term for ouch my butt hurts or whatever)

Nothing wrong with boys liking it, but ORIGINALLY It was made by Woman For Woman.

----

Now it's only natural for gay guys to go 'oh, two boys kissing, I like that because I'm gay!' but it's not 'they are kissing for me to watch'. I know -MANY- genuinly gay indivituals (bi curious and 16 and under gay boys don't really count, I'm talking very openly and comfortable gay teens and men) who think yaoi is silly, and stupid.

Just because your straight, does that mean you like all the cheesy sappy romance films with girl/guys right? Some people do (again mostly woman XD)

i was also speaking about some guys i know around 30-40 who are gay and looovvvee yaoi. one of them even has a friend who draws yaoi ^^;
mosta my gay guy friends are over twenty and they also like yaoi, but only one of them looks at anything hardcore. it's rather cute. a lot of the older guys i know also seem to like the fluffy stuff.

i hope nobody thought i was making general statements- i honestly was just stating from personal experience. the fammily has a hell of a lot of gay friends, so my view is probably skewed.

as for the marketing- yeah, i suppose so... i forget that the yaoi community is a little more like that- I suppose i'm more used to the shota community where a greater percentage of those who draw seem to be actually interested ect.

of course..because it's a girl's pleasure to see two boyz getting it on. sort of like the same concept as how boyz likes to watch porn or yuri. it's human nature!! biggrin xd
I so agree with that^^

Yaoi is made for guys, but it's not called yaoi, it's Bara. Gay Japanese comics by men, for men. However, Bara comics typically contain lots of beefy muscley guys and lots of hardcore sex. Whereas women's yaoi is soft and romantic, the guy's version isn't so much.

I thought this obvious seeing as the majority of Yaoi manga-ka are female. The only male I know of is Aoi Kujyo, who I strongly recommend. His art is lovely (good proportions and clean, flowing lines) and usually fluffy.

Most heterosexual males who see yaoi reflexively flinch. Society sees to it that if men like to read about men with men, they're gay; a stigma that ruins the genre a bit.

My male friend who is homosexual prefers to read yaoi manga featuring manly men. He says that my preference for a slender, elegant uke shows how much a female I am. He's gay, says he. He wants to see a man with a man, not a man with a girl without breasts and male bits.

Personally, I like yaoi because of the surfeit of bishounen. heart And the fact that shoujo protagonists gets on my nerves. Girls like Serena from Sailormoon give women a bad image. We don't always need to depend on our personal Tuxedo Masks, right?

----

Previous posts indicate that there are, in fact, many male yaoi artists out there. Can I get recommendations? Just not BDSM please. I read the Gravitation remix and was traumatized.

Hi! I'm coming in late and I think everything's already been said...but I'm going to say something anyway. Even if it is just a repeat... ^^;

***

Well, yaoi was created by women for women.

It's romantic and the guys are bishonen (pretty boys or 'chicks with dicks')- the whole thing is idealized. It's not meant to reflect a real gay relationship (which is why many gay men do not like it).

***

Gay manga? Well, there is Bara - erotic romance manga for men. Big muscles (which is why it's sometimes called 'muscle love'), short hair, small eyes... Not at all the bishounen characters that draw in many females in the first place. (Personally, bara does nothing for me; I hate the muscles! *laughs*)

Who says that all gay men are into simple manly men? To be honest, I really like the romantic and soft touch to most yaoi. And you have to understand how a "real gay relationship" exists before you judge it. Romance isn't just limited to heterosexual couples.

We aren't saying it is.

We are just saying how Yaoi was originally intended, I've been around for 10 years in the Yaoi-Community online, back when there was only 1000 or so active fan's, and now it feels like there's millions and no one seems to know what any history about the term 'yaoi' or it's classical definitions.

Everyone wants to simply say 'yaoi means gay' when infact, it does not.

Homosexual men (which I know many who dislike yaoi, it isn't to say they all do, but most grown (18+) men don't seem to like it too much except to laugh at or giggle. I suppose you have to be into anime/manga before you can even consider liking yaoi, honestly.) are totally allowed to like it! But the point being stated is that it isn't made directed twords them.

But just because they make pants for guys in the guys section doesn't stop me from buying and waring them, same goes the other way with girl pants and emo boys. That's totally OKAY.

Yaoi is idealized in a fashion that girls, for the most part, would find most appealing. If it also appeals to other minorities and groups, that's totally okay but primarily it's main intended audiance, which it is, is girls.

When homosexual men, and expecially boys, get online and see it for the first time they automatically assume it's 'gay' material that was originally made and intended for them, when in fact it wasn't.

This thread has nothing to do with stereotypes, everyone has different tastes. But what Yaoi was originally intended for is set in stone historically, and can't be changed. Though certain minorities and groups of people might say it's a certain way, as it stands, it has not changed from it's original format, girls still make it for girls.

<3 All boys are welcome to it, but it's important we understand things as they are and how they were, and not how we want them to be or how they seem to be on the surface.
