Japan did not take all of its culture from China. Yes, there were heavy influences from China that permeated Japanese life, but the Japanese had their own ways as well. The language was assimilated as the Japanese didn't have a writing system - japanese has kept about 8,000-10,000 of the 47,000 Chinese characters, and uses them in tandem with the hirigana and katakana. I don't know how many they actually utilize in a month though...
A lot of Japanese literature had Chinese influences, especially during the Tang Dynasty, however, japanese also have their own style of poetry and prose. The influential poetry of the Tang Dynasty can readily be seen in a lot of the literature that was produced during the Nara period in Japan and well into the Heian.
I know this because of the East Asian Studies major and East Asian Literature courses. If some of you are heading to college soon, you should try to take a class or two dealing with East Asian Literature. It'll be fun.
