Xenos Mortium Lady Blodwynn Wow, my age old PC can run Fallout 2, I guess I can lay off buying a new one for the time being I'm jealous. I can't get it to work. neutral It dissapoints me that so many great games can't be played on XP and Vista. I have trouble with the older Fallout games, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. Starcraft! I can't ******** play Starcraft! Honestly, I think that the industry needs to revisit some old ideas. What made Deus Ex so amazing? Baldur's Gate? Fallout? System Shock 2? Metal Gear Solid? The reason why all of these have been so great is that they create a world that you can fully immerse yourself into, create a setting and story that you can enjoy and look back upon just as a great literary work. Gimmicks and fanciful graphics are not what makes a game great. The best way to make a game stand the test of time is the same way in which you may make a book, comic, or movie do so; you must weave a tale that is great enough to draw people in and leave them wanting for more.
What game can sport the conversation piece along the lines of: I killed Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, murdered their entire church in San Fransisco, popped into New Reno to do some pornos followed by some boxing against Mike Tyson with iron-plated gloves and oh yeah, I'm supposed to save my village from certain death. Add in good cult references such as killing off Blondie, Angel Eyes and Tuco, finding the Bridge of Death and unwashed farmers against forum goons and yes, we have a winner.

They came out at the right time doing the right thing at that time thing being a new idea (what becomes a gimmick right quick), spiffy graphics or a really good storyline (but most games need all of them)
The specal cases (like Doom) just come out at the right time

Telling a story isnt always a part of immersion. In the case of SSX 3, a game thats five years old, its a snowboard game. Theres no story other than your character wants to win some snowboarding medals.
Its still immersive though, such as the radio. Theres a playlist of only about 40 songs, but theyve recorded enough ads, service announcements, weather reports, little jokes and anec dotes, and even had bands do the whole "this is _____ and youre listening to..." thing to make the game seem more....I guess alive. Banter between riders while racing down the mountain, little rivalries and alliances mid race.
As a contrast you could consider tony hawk games, the levels are always empty and very bland, its just you and this expanse, there just isnt any life.
