KatrinaZ Does anyone remember watching Kaptain Kangaroo, with Mr. Greenjeans, moose and rabbit? ... Interesting, but I met Captain Kangeroo in person before he was Captain Kangeroo. That;s when he was Clarabell. He was from Long Island where I grew up and he came to our Grade School for a promotional appearance. That's when he was on the Howdy Doody Show!

Well, I'm from New Yawk! and here two of the favorite activities of my childhood were Stick Ball and Stoop Ball!
I grew up before there was TV!
On Sunday mornings I'd snuggle up with my parent's on their bed and listen to Mayor Laguardia (New York City) read the comics to us over the radio.
On Christmas Eve, we would all sit around the Console Radio (that was bigger than me) and Mayor Laguardia would read the T'was The Night Before Christmas at about 8 p.m. and then I would go to bed with those Sugar Plum visions to anxiously await the next mornings presents.
On Saturday mornings, we would all gather at a friends house for a picture show. Unknown to me, my friends father was a world renowned photographer and editor of Popular Photography magazine Bruce Downs.
Anyway, their family was the only one who had a movie projector and we would get to watch a couple of reels of movies in their basement theater.
The first TV I ever watched was the Howdy Doody Show. Again it was at a friends house because they were the first on the block to get a TV. At the appointed hour, a group of us kids would hunker down on the floor to watch their 12" Black and White TV screen to enjoy Howdy and his friends entertain us for a half an hour.

Of course, we also had Captain Video on New York Televison and my favorite, Kukla, Fran and Ollie! Back then, puppets were puppets and they showed them strings and all.

*singing* Here he comes to save the day, it's Mighty Mouse!!! blaugh

On Sunday's, all my aunts, uncles and cousins on my dad's side would go over to my Grandma and Grandpa's house. for dinner. Each family brought a dish to pass. A couple of times, we made ice cream in one of those old fashioned ice cream makers, the kind you had to turn the hand crank for what seemed like hours on end! After the meals, the men would go into the basement or outside and chat, while the women sat at the dinning room table and played cards, usually Hearts. Us kids would be all over the place, playing and bugging everyone! It was great! I miss those days...

I remember my mom sitting me in front of our black and white TV and watching the first man walk on the moon.
I remember watching I Love Lucy, Speed Racer, Gilligans Island, MASH and the hip movies were Easy Rider, Billy Jack, Star Track (the old ones).
I remember hitch hiking just for something to do.
I know there is more, but my foggy brain wont let the info through. LOL

I was born in 1959, and we used to play outside all day every day when i was a kid. Mom and Dad would call us back to the house if they needed us using a big bell they put on the end of the grape arbor we still have. We used to go all over the place, to the warehouses, and all over the government farms in our back yard. I remember being excited when I first saw a calf being born on those farms. Anyway, I was outside most every day back then, no computers, and not allowed to watch tv (it belonged to Dad and he did not allow us to watch it when he was not home, but we did anyway - Kimba the White Lion, Romper Room, Captain Kangaroo, Ultraman, and Speed Racer)

When I was in grade school, they did not know (or at least they pretended to not know) of the dangers of DDT (the pesticide that was later banned in the 70s some time). I swear I am not making this up when I tell you that they used to spray this fog of DDT to kill bugs in our home town in Nebraska. We used to play hide and seek until the deadly fog came to kill the bugs. If you were slow, you would get caught up in the deadly fog and you would stumble back to your house coughing and wheezing (happened to me once only. I got faster after that!). They said it didn't hurt people or animals and just killed bugs but I swear that is why I have such serious allergies now as an adult. Still, it was great fun to play hide and seek and try not to get caught in the deadly fog of pesticide.

pirate Geesh, I remember getting up early on Saturdays to watch the micky mouse club...when Lisa Whelchel was on it...Come to think of it, there were quite a few of those mousketeers that ended up on Facts of Life. Ohh yeah. How about the Donny and Marie show? In my hometown, that was on right after Lost in Time, and right before the KISS show. I s**t you not.
