Well, the final episode of the series proved to be very exciting, powerful and unexpectedly emotional.
[spoilers] The battle between the Daleks and the Cybermen was impressive - good special effects again - and, of course, they aren't really gone for good, are they? Sucked into the Void - but that's where the Daleks came from this time around - so surely, at some point in the future, they could find a way back again... eek I loved the Gallifreyan prison ship, with its "Timelord science", which even the Doctor didn't figure out until it opened, then - yes, of course - bigger on the inside!!
And Rose is gone, never able to travel with the Doctor again. In the end, she got what she thought she had always wanted - her mum and dad together; but in such altered circumstances that I was reminded of the saying, "be careful what you wish for - because you might get it". The poignancy started building up when she and the Doctor were pressed against either side of the dividing wall, aware of each other's presence, but unable to communicate. And so, on to the final, wrenching parting in Bad Wolf Bay. I thought that David Tennant and Billie Whitelaw Piper** were excellent in these scenes, showing real depth of feeling. Something finally happened that I've never seen before - the Doctor shed tears when he knew Rose was finally gone. So did I. [/spoilers]
The Christmas Special is our next stop - but things will never quite be the same again.
** Edited for stupidity... redface xp

I could have killed the continuity announcer for reminding me I had to wait 160 days (I think) until the next instalment. Roll on Torchwood!

Well, it sounds like a wonderful capping episode. I certainly hope I get a chance to see the new season, soon.

Billie Piper, not Billie Whitelaw. smile
Although am I the only one concerned by the presence of Catherine Tate as "The Runaway Bride"? We've seen enough boot-licking guest-casting of RTD's assorted friends and idols (*coughPeterKaycough*) for the last three months - if we have to have yet more "trendy" guest stars crowbarred in, I hope that she's a better straight actress than she is a comedienne. sad

redface What can I say? Never post stuff when you're tired and traumatised... xp It didn't look quite right at the time... Billie Whitelaw could be a good Doctor Who character, but not the companion xd
No, you're not the only one concerned by Catherine Deneuve j/k blaugh Tate's appearance at the end of the episode. My heart sank at the prospect of another Peter Kay-type extravaganza. Let's hope our fears are unfounded... wink

Bearing in mind who we're discussing, what're the odds? sad Harbone Hey! I used to LARP back in college. What kinda LARP? I was a padded weapons and sock-flails person. Latex weapons or nowt, on the whole (swords 'n' sorcery systems). I still have respect for the person who managed to come up with a LARP-safe chainsaw, complete with rotating blade. Quote: I did that Vampire thing a couple times, too, but I learned to hate it in short order. Never could stomach V:tM or general vampire LARP. It's not so much the mechanics as the sort of BDSM-obssessed powergamers it tended to attract in my neighbourhood. Quote: We never did a Dr. Who LARP, but it didn't seem to lend itself to the medium very well. Is there such a thing? I think there's a desktop RPG, but I've never heard of a LARP. I can see it working in a vaguely Cthulhu-esque, low-key conspiracy kind of way, though - after all, the special effects haven't exactly been hard to replicate with a good make-up kit until the last couple of seasons. Quote: Notice how I carefully avoid mentioning Peter Kay? This may be because I have no idea who he is. Why is that? Many reasons. Speaking as someone from the part of the country that seems to think that we should have some sort of loyalty to Peter Kay as a local lad made god: you have my undying envy for that. I was playing catch-up on the episodes I missed with a friend over the weekend. He was calling Fear Her possibly the most dire episode ever. I sat through it, informed him that he hadn't seen Love and Monsters (which was on the same tape) and retreated quickly. I still don't think he's forgiven me for that... smile In principle, yes. It was the 30 degree heat which was the major handicap - I've never seen latex shields start to warp or the ties on a suit of scale male actually melt before. Lots of runny make-up and people who normally wear chainmail and plate armour deciding to run about in shirts. And whoever decided to stage the big, two-hour final battle to start at 1pm needed slapping. :p

I only saw sporatic DW in late 70's/early 80's.... hey, it's South Carolina, that should speak volumes. I love sci-fi and DW is wonderful! Have seen both of the new series, playing catch up with some classic eps, and can't wait for Christmas and the Runaway Bride! biggrin

I actually joined Gaia because of a friend of mine in the Sci-Fi DW forum told me about Gaia's DW forum. As I said, I'm playing catch up with the DW history. I envy you folks in the UK... Sci-Fi is dragging its feet as whether it's going to show the 2nd series or not. Grrr! Thank goodness for all the other ways of getting to see those shows.. wink Are you also in the DW guild?

Welcome! I don't say much on this thread even tho' I started it since I'm still way behind in the series. But it's great to see another geezer fan of the Doctor! I'm afraid I've had to put off a member of joining the Dr Who guild as well. Not that you asked, but I thought it'd be nice to say something.
