.....Now all I've got to do is buy a tea bowl... sweatdrop
I had the most beautiful tea bowl brought back from Japan from by some dear friends... it was ruined in the flooding from a couple years ago! gonk

gonk Argh, that sucks! *Hugs Tea*
I would really like a tea bowl of my own, so I can practice making tea (I always forget steps when I'm at club sweatdrop ) and so I can have a bowl when I want to, rather than just once a week...I haven't had matcha since the 3rd (Doll Festival in Japan) which was ages ago...I'm considering using a small soup bowl I have in substitution...I just really want matcha!

(I hope I can find an affordable tea bowl somewhere. I've seen some gorgeous ones in the stores, but they are like, ¥15 000 for one bowl gonk I can't afford $227 (Aussie dollars) for a bowl! xp
You can buy a nice Winter Bowl in Seattle for about $25 USD. It's a mass production piece, but it's of suitable quality I don't mind offering it to guests.

That sounds much better than a ¥15 000 bowl. 3nodding When I read 'mass production piece' it reminds me that every month or so, the shopping centre nearby has a ceramic sale. I've seen a few bowls that could work as tea bowls, and they are only about ¥1000 each. Maybe I should keep an eye out for the next stall...

I've never had matcha. sweatdrop Hear it's pretty good, but I'm not a huge fan of green tea in the first place so getting a matcha set has always taken second priority to, say, restocking my Earl Grey.

Sounds like a plan. I recommend working with a winter bowl before you try a summer bowl. They're harder to spill.

I just made myself a bowl now. blaugh It's really good, though the bitterness puts a lot of people off drinking it.

Tea:
Thank you for the tip! I'll look for a winter bowl next time the stall is up and running. 3nodding

Bitter? Are you drinking thick tea or thin tea?

It's bitter if it is koicha or usucha (thick or thin), though I think I might have made it a bit too strong last night. sweatdrop At tea ceremony I've only learnt to make usucha so far. I think my problem was I was using a regular spoon rather than the specialised scoop, so I couldn't measure out the right amount of tea. xp

Oh well, on the bright side, it still tasted good! 3nodding I'm trying to have a bowl once a day. When I was drinking it once a week, I felt healthier, so I'm thinking that a bowl a day (or every two days) would be good for my health. 3nodding

(I think I need to reread your instructions on how to quote sections and not the whole lot. sweatdrop Until I get it right, I'll just change the colour to make my answers stand out.)
In answer to your question, it's green. blaugh

I'm thinking of making another bowl now actually....I'll put less matcha in this time and see what happens. 3nodding

What shade? Have you ever seen an iPod Shuffle? Is the powder that color or is it late summer leaf green? Or does it have brown tones?

I was heating water for one myself.

Um, it's a rich, dark green. (wow, that was descriptive. gonk ) The powder is a little bit lighter, but the tea itself is fairly dark.

The powder should be a bright green. How long have you had the matcha?

Argh, sorry, my description sucks. I had a quick look just then, and the powder is like you said, bright green. I haven't had it for very long at all-I bought it about a week ago.

The jar says to use water that's between 80-90 degrees Celsius, but because my kettle only has certain temperatures it can heat to, I'm using 85.

HOSHIT!
No wonder it's bitter. It's being scorched. Try 55 degrees Celsius.
