Recent evidence has shown that during WWI, scientists in Germany were developing a new, armored ground-based assault vehicle. Exact schematics of the weapon are unknown, but it is clear that if it had been unveiled, it may have swung the war in Germany's favor; thank God it never saw the field of battle. A picture of this armored vehicle has been found and released to the press:

Actually I wouldn't put it past the US military to have been working on a beam saber at one time or another.
