How exactly does name order matter?

Name order generally indicates who is on top. In a lesbian relationship, it would probably be the difference between who was acting more the male part and who wasn't (I believe I've heard the roles referred to as the Butch and Femme). For a male male relationship, the name that is first would be the pitcher/seme/top or whatever else name one wishes to use and the second name would be the catcher/uke/bottom or whatever else name one wishes to use. In a heterosexual relationship, the male name would presumably come first (for crack pairings my friends and I have used reversing the order and putting the female name first as a way of saying that despite being a girl she would totally top that dude).
While I'm sure there are many people who don't care about name order and really never take it into consideration (the EdRoy pairings that are in fact Roy X Ed seem to prove that) I've found that if one follows that guideline it makes it far easier for fans to understand and states the pairing in an accurate manner.
