Trumbeak, Rufflet... both had moves good against rock, and both were weak against. Popplio was... okay, but she wasn't that strong... Litten was strong, but he was weak to rock type. Pan was... neutral on the whole matter. And Lady was neither strong, nor did she have good moves, nor was she susceptible. The bright side would be to say that he had a good variety and that the battle would be interesting-- but, of course, Adder wasn't exactly an optimistic person. He healed up his pokemon and headed for the gym, making his way to the gym leader, and anxiously grabbing Trumbeak's pokeball, gripping it tightly. "I'm here to challenge the gym leader B... Roark," he announced, gritting his teeth a bit. He almost misspoke.... maybe he was more nervous than he thought, much to his own chagrin....

Roark poked his head out from around a large boulder when he heard a somewhat nervous sounding voice call out a challenge. He had taken the near slip of the tongue as stammering from nerves rather than a mistake in names. "Hey there! I'll be with you in a minute." He waved to Adder before setting aside his excavation tools, standing, and brushing himself off so he could go meet with the blonde kid more professionally, his geodude following after him. "Heya champ, I'm Roark." Roark gave Adder a friendly grin, lifting his helmet a bit so he could get a better look at the boy. "Ready to rock and roll? I'll be testing your potential as a trainer." He suggested, nodding to his geodude to go on and move ahead of him to start this battle off.

Adder flushed a bit at the nickname, trying (and somewhat failing) not to puff his cheeks out in response. Champ? Was that some kinda condescending nickname or something? He'd be willing to bet he didn't call twenty-something-year-olds that when they challenged his gym. Age (and size) complexes aside, Roark seemed to just giving a friendly greeting, and after a moment, Adder rolled his shoulders, and relaxed. "Yeah, I know," he muttered, before pulling out his first pokemon's pokeball. He tossed it out, giving the command as the pokemon appeared, "Use Razor Leaf."

It was a bit surprising for Roark to see the little boy's face grow puffed up and red suddenly. Was it something he said...? Regardless, Adder made a quick recovery, sending out a rowlet to shoot a devastating razor leaf at his geodude."Wow, you cut right to the chase, don't you?" He chuckled a bit nervously. He was used to getting pummeled by water and grass type pokemon, but this felt almost like a bridge too far somehow. He couldn't even get an attack in. With an inaudible sigh, he returned the geodude to send out his onix next. The massive rock snake grumbled and stared down at the tiny owl that he was faced with. "Guess we'd better get busy too. Onix, use Rock Throw!" Roark commanded, casting his arm outward to direct the attack.

Adder's eye twitched slightly. Cut.... W... was that a pun? From his Razor Leaf? He gave Roark a narrow eyed, wary look. He couldn't tell... But either way, at least the attack worked. Roark's pokemon was down and out in one hit, and Rowlet hadn't taken a single blow. Adder shoved his hands into his pockets, but quirked an eyebrow and gave the gym leader a very much 'Seriously?' look when he sent out his next pokemon. Most children would know better than to doubt their elders, even if that age gap was only by so many years, but... no. Adder clearly questioned this choice. For... some good reason, at least. "Razor Leaf, Rowlet," he instructed, as though this were pretty obvious, frowning as he lifted a hand to almost give a shrug with the command. Was he missing something.... Then again, he didn't seem at all concerned that his pokemon had even taken damage...
Either way, assuming this attack landed, and hit like he thought, he'd probably switch pokemon for his last battle... Maybe Popplio could take a swing...

This kid was really making some strange faces, and just remaining quiet other than barking out the occasional attack. Roark wasn't sure what to think, or do for that matter. He couldn't help but feel he'd somehow offended the kid or something, though he wasn't really sure how. To no surprise, the rowlet made quick work of his onix, but at least he'd managed to do enough damage with that rock throw. Sending out cranidos next, he expected to quickly finish the job, but Adder swapped pokemon out for a popplio. Still a strong type advantage. Roark was somewhat backed into a corner here. Hopefully his cranidos' brute strength would be enough to help them pull through. That headbutt of his did pack quite the punch. It was usually enough to cause pokemon to flinch and leave an opening for another attack. "Alright cranidos, headbutt!" He commanded, sending the fossil charging at the water type.

Adder hardened his expression as Roark sent out his next pokemon. His last pokemon, he was pretty sure. Another rock type -- as he expected -- though this one wasn't dual type. Adder straightened up and folded his arms over his chest, grinding through who to use next, should Popplio faint. He wasn't exactly holding a lot of faith in the poor water pokemon... "Popplio, use Scald!" he instructed, raising his shoulders some. He'd see how this went, how long she stuck it out... then... maybe he'd send Lady out....

As the popplio pulled out a powerful scald attack, cranidos was nearly taken out in one hit, barely left with the strength to stand. If it hadn't been for his tough rock hide, the water might have even burned him, but he held fast and was able to deliver a second headbutt to the sea lion pokemon. A take down at this point would have been more effective, but in Cranidos' weakened condition, he wouldn't have been able to stand the recoil damage and ended up knocking itself out in the process too. The most they could hope for was trying to land a flinch with this headbutt, but if cranidos at full health wasn't able to make the water type flinch, there was very little hope that he would this time.

Adder let out a soft sigh when Popplio actually endured the attack. He wasn't... surprised, per se, but he let go of all the contingency plans he'd already started trying to figure out. With Popplio still standing and Cranidos looking to be on the last of its legs, this battle was pretty much in the bag. "Alright, Popplio, finish it off with Scald," he instructed, in a more relaxed tone as he scratched the back of his head. He could go easier and use Aqua Jet (in fact, if he'd been smart, he would have done that to avoid the hit), and avoid the overkill that followed, but.... better safe than sorry, in his opinion...

Roark had accepted his defeat the moment Adder had come out swinging with crushing super effective attacks, but he had still tried to enjoy the battle while it lasted. It.... Didn't help that Adder had been practically non responsive to any light conversation that Roark had tried to make, but being optimistic and friendly as he was, the red headed rock type tried not to let it get to him. He returned Cranidos as the final blow was dealt, and moved to meet Adder with rewards in hand. "Hey! Nicely done. I think you've more than earned this coal badge." He suggested with a smile and tip of his mining helmet. "Word of advice though.... Relax. You were so serious there, battles are supposed to be fun, you can talk to your opponent you know. It's really okay." He suggested with a wary smile. Maybe it was just him. He didn't know, maybe it was an intentional intimidation tactic on Adder's part, and if that was the case, it sure worked.... "Uh, anyways, I'd better go heal up my pokemon. Good luck out there!" He nodded, giving Adder a light wave.

Adder's shoulders dropped and he returned Popplio as soon as their opponent went down, the little water pokemon only managing to lift her flippers up and begin a cheer of victory before she vanished inside. They'd won... And that was their first gym battle, too. It was honestly pretty easy, really.... "Thanks," he muttered, putting Popplio's ball away as Roark congratulated him. He just sort of... stared, though, at the advice, tilting his head slightly. He did not want to talk to his opponent. What would he say? "Ha! You just got PWNED!"? No. He didn't want to sound like those idiots from his school, and casual conversation was pointless. ".... Thanks," he repeated flatly, taking the prizes. Were all gym leaders going to try and be this friendly.... Was this a thing he was going to have to deal with....
He shook his head some, eyed Roark, then nodded as he excused himself, watching him go a moment, before heading out. He was going to heal his pokemon... and head straight for the next city. He needed to get these gyms done.

Noel couldn’t help but sneeze from the dust that was kicked up as they touched down in Oreburgh City. It was a mining city and it certainly showed. The browns and greys and massive amounts of machinery and mountains pretty much indicated anything anyone needed to know about the place.
Swiping his nose, Noel jumped down and started to look around. He was still feeling a little sleepy from all the moving but wanted to help this time to try and keep himself awake. He dug out a handkerchief to blow his nose, following Sherlock at Mattimeo as the pair took up the mantel of leadership to guide to the egg.

Hopefully they wouldn’t have to go down into the mines or anything to try and find the egg in question. Mines were basically man-made caves and he was still not looking to deal with such things so soon. While they walked he once more produced the music box from his pocket to look it over. He was still wondering who had lost it and how and even why it was at the ruins of all places. Something like this in town would’ve made sense but out in near the ruins…?

Noel frowned. It was odd. Curiosity taking over now, he raised a hand to grip the turn key once more. He frowned a bit at the resistance it gave him when he first tried to turn it. Everything looked… all right. Despite the antiquated look, everything seemed to be in good condition which meant that it was just going to take a little muscle to turn the key. With a deep breath, Noel took a hold of the turn key again and attempted to turn it. This time he applied a little more effort, managing to turn the key a bit more. A little more force and it budged a little bit more. It seemed that if he could get in a proper full twist it would work like it should’ve.
