So many things true... (true that I lived them I mean).

My mother in law says she didn't know all that "weird" stuff of pregnacy control I have to made before my baby was born. She have her kids with... (don't know the word in english... "partera") someone who know how to help women to have babies without doctors and hospitals.

My mom also says she didn't have to take so many pills and it's true we weren't dependent to the cell phones and we used to get outside more often to interact with real people.

I hope... somehow... to be able to teach all that to my daughter. To have a real life (and... even so... I'm posting here).

The best thing about growing up when I did was the whole family thing. We lived in the city and my one set of grandparents lived in the suburbs and the other grandfather lived in the country. We would spend one day on the weekend at one house and the other at the other house except for harvest seasons. When it was time to harvest the big family garden at the farm we all pitched in and those are my favorite times. Other times were also working on the farm with the whole family. This included 3 sets of aunts and uncles and their numerous kids. We kids worked hard but we had a good time doing it. It was good times.

Lil Brat
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.

Those who did not had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

And, while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!
Dude, I was born in '84 and My childhood was almost exactly like that. and the two posts before it.

This reminds me of the "Eggapellers". My sister and I and 2 neighbor boys would play in the back woods and we had these strange beings that we would scare the younger neighbors with. Even when the lake froze we would have late night Eggapeller storied in the fish houses.

I'm new to the guild, but I survived the 70's and did not break anything...except some toes. I used to eat beef jerky and drink Dr. Pepper every Saturday because that was my special treat on Saturdays.

And I was SKINNY!!!

I have photos of when I was 12, you will love it!

Where I grew up there are no street lights or dinner bells. I just knew that when the sun hit the top of the mountains it was time to head back home.

Didn't make up any strange creatures to interact with, the desert had enough of those already. But we did scare the smaller kids on the school bus by telling them the driver was a witch (and she had the look for it) and threatening them that she would turn them in to frogs if they misbehaved.

Ditto.

But I still got to experience almost all of those things.

When I was a kid, I lived on a naval base in southern California. My dad was usually deployed overseas, and when he wasn't, he was working. My mom didn't work, but she partied every night, so she spent the day sleeping off her hangover. I made sure my two younger sisters got breakfast and dressed. Then we would go out and not come back until the sun began to set.

We climbed trees (one of my sisters fell out of a tree and broke her arm), rode bikes without helmets, played war, hide and seek, climbed onto the roofs of the military housing, and wandered the Navy Exchange, the local gas station, and the Commisary. We usually stole something for lunch or a snack and even stole video games, toys, and one time, an Easy-Bake Oven! I still can't believe we never got caught. Remember when McDonalds offered the free miniature ice cream cones? We went there and got those. There was an abandoned mansion where some guy hung himself and we used to sneak in there and hang out or explore. Across from that was what we called 'the witch's park.' It was an old, bleak-looking park that was usually vacant and the equipment was older than dirt. Oh, and sometimes we'd do chores for a friends' mom and get some cash, and we'd use that to go to the Bowling Alley or to get an even bigger ice cream from McDonalds. We went to the movie theater if we got a bunch of money. I remember the last movie we saw ("Junior" with Arnold Schwartzenager (I know it's spelt wrong, lol) and Danny DeVito). When we were especially bored, we went to the museum.

Despite all that, we knew to never wander outside the base. We were too scared to anyway because we thought we'd get locked out it we did manage to get past the gate guard. And that would make mom angry. And we NEVER wanted to make mom angry. o_o

When for some reason we couldn't go outside (nasty weather was usually the culprit), we would stay in our rooms (quietly) and play video games, watch movies, play with our Barbies, or play pretend. Our favorite pretend game was Mario, but I was usually stuck playing Mario or Bowser while my sisters argued over who got to be the Princess, and they usually ended up both being the Princess. xD

I don't think mom knows to this day what kind of trouble we got ourselves into. rofl
