Next week may be better, or worse, depending on how you look at it. ninja

Right, hobby stuff, paired with vacation, that's a thing. So, first week of vacation almost over, still got one more to go, but in the meantime it feels like I've painted more in these last few days than I did in the last six months.

One of the things I painted up was some scatter terrain from the Munitorum Container set. There were reasons for this, the first being I need a lot of it for games of Shadow Wars - Armageddon for models to hide behind and a fellow Dakkanaut's blog features really nice pieces of scatter on display every now and again, which certainly gave a bit of extra motivation to work on these. Though to be honest this was also a nice diversion from painting nothing but infantry all the time, while still forcing myself to keep holding onto a brush and not do something else for the rest of the day. Nothing too shocking technique wise, just a simple basecoat, wash, drybrush and in case of the crates, a decal or two to give them a little something extra in form of warning labels and the like.

The crates have been glued together into stacks of two high, so models have something nice to hide behind or clamber over for a clearer shot.

That's the terrain for now, I am still working on a trio of armoured containers (without the stupid storm bolters up top) and the Shadow War - Armageddon terrain itself, which I am slowly painting up into a small refinery structure of sorts belonging to either the Mechanicum or some private consortium.

On to the meat of my labours then. One of the teams I've worked on is an Angels of Something-something kill team, which will most likely be much hated by some of the locals, because of well.. I'm lonely, shut it.

Done for the most part, though I still need to do one or two coats of red on the chainsword housing of the sergeant, plus devise a simple urban camo pattern for the cloak of the sniper, but other than that, these are actually done. It was a nice diversion, having to paint something other than the usual blue or red all the time and I've always secretly wanting to do something Dark Angels related for some time now, especially something involving the classic image of dark green armour and bright red housings for their bolters, an image well cemented into my head for some reason. I also wanted to pay homage to the old Space Crusade scouts, who had these weird mohawks with mullets / tails, so the bolter scout has a small Mohawk.

Only downside was not having Dark Angel decals small enough for their shoulder pads, the ones that came with the kit were made for power armour, not scouts. So I made do and used another symbol, not sure where it is from, but it looks suitably angelic enough to do the job.

But whatever, one squad down, perfect as a demo team for people who lack models and still want to give the game a try:

Models and team are as of yet unnamed, aside from them being the 6th squad of the tenth company. They are a simple team really, heavily focused on ranged for the most part, as we found out that ranged is boss in this game!

Sergeant - bolt pistol & chainsword
Scout - bolter
Scout - shotgun
Scout - sniper rifle, camo cloak, red-dot laser sight, telescopic sight
Gunner - heavy bolter

This all should be 1000pts, give or take, not sure, can't find my notes at the moment. On the desk right now are an extra two noviate scouts (read: scrubs), both armed with bolt pistols and combat knives, who will act as cheap reinforcements for future campaign games. As always, the heads are from Statuesque Miniatures, my go-to source for heroic scale female heads.

The other team I've been working on are the Skitarii, having gotten a box from my FLGS in exchange for a game I didn't want (thanks Mark!) with the test model now done and the rest of the team in various stages of completion, which can be seen further down this post:

Troika-14, or the Troika unit, a reference to a rather disappointing novel about the Skitarii, though instead of being an Alpha this chap is armed with a plasma caliver. The rest of the squad will swiftly follow and be done on Monday, fingers crossed, as I may turn this team into my primary team for an upcoming campaign later this month.

Whereas the scouts have limited melee capabilities, this team is a strictly ranged affair, though I did build an Alpha armed with an arc maul and arc pistol for melee duties earlier this week, but revisited this after deciding why get stuck in when you can shoot them from a distance instead? Preferably using pieces of equipment so filthy good.

Skitarii Ranger Alpha - Galvanic rifle, omnispex
Skitarii Ranger - Galvanic rifle
Skitarii Fresh-forged - Radium carbine
Skitarii Fresh-forged - Radium carbine
Skitarii Specialist - Plasma caliver
Skitarii Specialist - Transuranic Arquebus, red-dot laser sight

I have actually put some thought into the building of this team (unlike the usual "I like this, ergo I use it!" mindset), with the specialist with Arquebus and the Skitarii Alpha, whose omnispex is a filthy piece of equipment, taking the high ground and sniping the s**t out of anybody in their sights, with the Alpha denying enemy models cover, making it all the easier for the specialist to turn opposition into a fine pink mist. Or a chunky meat salsa, not sure what a radioactive anti-material rifle does to an ork just yet. The Troika unit, regular Ranger and fresh-forged will be the mobile element, moving out and wiping out anything I can't snipe straight away, or making a beeline for any objectives or the like. Or so I like to think. Knowing my luck, all terrain will have no great points to snipe from. emo

Finally, what I have on the desk right now:

In the back row: my Skitarii kill team. From left to right: the specialist with the Transuranic Arquebus, regular Skitarii with Galvanic rifle, Ranger Alpha with omnispex and rifle, the Ranger Alpha with Arc Maul and Arc Pistol and the last two models are a pair of newly inducted Skitarii, both with Radium carbines.

In front of them are: an Ogryn with power maul and brute shield (actually wrapped up at this point), a pair of Noviate Scouts armed with bolt pistols and combat blades, my converted inquisitor who is as of yet unnamed but already primed in gold and last but not least, a pair of converted scions. Not sure when I'm going to start on those, perhaps after I'm done with those two novice scouts.

TLDR: On the workbench right now:
* Skitarii kill team (5)
* Noviate scouts (2)
* Munitorum Containers (3)
* Refinery
* Tempestus Scions (2)

I also need to see about finding one of those plastic Techpriest Enginseers as a future special operative for my Skitarii, re-rolling botched ammo rolls is a good thing to have.

After a four month hiatus / hobby burnout I've decided to pick up a brush again recently, we'll see how long it lasts before work comes crashing in again full force.

And no, I'd rather cut my arms open from elbow to wrist than add in those morons of Chi-Ha-Tan Academy.

Nice! Taking a bit of a hiatus myself.

The blue came out very clean on that, good layering.

Thanks, this colour scheme is surprisingly easy: the Fang as a basecoat followed by Thunderhawk Blue for the actual main colour, with Reikland flesh shade around the rivets and panel lines for shading. It's also more liberally used as the shade of choice for the golden parts, giving it more warmth.

I find Reikland to be a good alternative to Agrax, which is simply too dark sometimes.

It depends on the base colour really and the effect you want to achieve. I want my gold to look warm and my blues to be dirty, but not overly so, making (non-glossy) flesh shade the best choice.

Nine times out of ten though, I prefer Agrax earthshade, especially for faces and skin, as it nicely contrasts with the paler highlights I tend to use. Though I may need to experiment for when Necromunda drops.

They're a low, low priority in all honesty, plus they are already moulded in green plastic, which is more than a lot of unpainted plastic has going for itself in my collection. sweatdrop
