She looked at his hand a moment before looking ahead again. "Indeed.... but as we have established I'm not most girls." This made her smile, even though she had to admit to herself, if only herself, that it would be nice to get something of the sort from someone.

"No you're not. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't get something nice every once and a while." He gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze before removing his hand.

Bernadette relaxed then. she knew he was right, but would never tell him so herself. She noticed her grandmother looking back at them now and rolled her eyes.

"So I may or may not get you something now, who knows." Alex shrugged. "Not that I have any clue what you'd want anyways."

"Well you don't need to get me anything. But I do like things simple." She didn't mind dropping that if he insisted on getting her something.

"I'll keep that in mind." He wasn't sure what to get her now, but he felt the need to do it anyways. He still thought she didn't want anything, but was hoping she might change her mind once she got it.

Her grandmother was climbing the rickety stairs to the front door. "Watch your step." she warned Alex as she went up to help her grandmother.

Alex nodded and stepped to the side to let Bernadette go first. He wasn't trying to be a gentleman or impress anyone, it just came naturally to him. "After you."

Once her grandmother was in the door she went to check on her husband. Bernadette went into the kitchen area. "Make yourself at home." She hung up her cloak. "Want anything to drink?"

She came out a few minutes later with her husband. "We have a guest tonight dear." She said to him as they made their way to the kitchen table.

He grumbled a little, just waking up from sleep. He was a little gray in complexion, but moving better then he had in the last week.

"Thanks." He said, following her inside as he looked around. "Sure, a glass of water would be fine." He said with a shrug, looking towards the direction that her grandmother had just gone in.

"Who are you?" the old man grumbled. He was still a little disoriented form sleep and sickness.

"Our guest for dinner. Malcom. " she blushed a little at her husbands rudeness.

"Zeidy this is Alex." Bernadette got him a glass of water and walked over to Alex. "Sorry about my grandfather. He still isn't aware of everything."

Alex nodded to her but didn't think much of it. "Alexander Black, Sir. It's a pleasure to meet you." He spoke more formally than he was used to, but decided that respect would be the best thing for the situation. "It's fine."

He grumbled and looked up at the voice.

Bernadette touched Alex's shoulder in thanks and went over and gave her grandfather a kiss on the cheek before going to the kitchen to help fix dinner with her grandmother.

He lit up a bit at his granddaughters small kiss. He knew she was and was glad to have her there.

She lit the stove to get their stew hot again. "I hope you like stew Alexander."

Alex smiled softly at seeing her grandfathers reaction to the kiss that Bernadette gave him. He didn't really want to be left in the room with the man, but he wasn't about to say anything against it. "Stew is fine. Has to be better than whatever I can make." He said with a small chuckle before sipping his drink.

Her grandmother shooed her out of the kitchen with nothing much to do but get the stew and bread warm. So she busied her self with setting the table. She took bowels and silverware out of the cabinet in the dinning area. She gave Alex a small smile. Her grandparents lived very simply. Nothing big or fancy about their home. The most that was around for decoration were hand made things from children and grandchildren.
