flight"Brighten up."
West had been staring moodily out of the window, but he turned now just to shoot Tel a contemptuous glare across the front seat of the older demon's messy van.
"Stay focused. Reach for the stars. Do your best. Smile."
"Shut up."
"That too." He snorted, keeping his eyes on the road. "Shut the ******** up, Telefsen. I think that's one of my favorites."
"Fav'rite what?"
"Useless platitude. Shut the ******** up. It warms the heart."
"Are you drunk?" West briefly pondered what it might be like to dissipate in a cider-fueled car accident. No worse than getting roasted by your former gym teacher's swamp breath, he supposed. As long as he re-formed when it was all over, Tel could do what he pleased.
"You said you were a loser on the phone."
"I didn't."
"Sorry. You sounded like one."
West grunted.
"We're on the way to somewhere you can fix that."
- - - It took an hour for them to reach their apparent destination, an hour full of Tel's off-key singing and the dull green country smells one encountered just outside the borders of most bustling cities. They pulled off the road into an empty field in one-sided silence, Tel matching the volume of the radio until the moment he shut off the car. He hopped out onto the grass without explanation or comment, stretching his back and cracking his neck as he sauntered farther away from the car. His curiosity softly smoldering, West followed.
"Flying," Tel eventually said once West had caught up. "You don't do enough of it. I haven't seen your prissy little wings since you were, like, six."
West shook his head. "That's just 'cause you were never around when I used 'em."
Tel paused, mouth open, then shrugged. "Fair enough. But did you ever actually break the things out for more than a glide until this school made you? Seriously?"
West tried to think of a statement that was both true and would prove his uncle wrong, but after about a minute and a half of idly kicking the weeds and slowly pacing, he had to concede. "Guess not." He didn't like his wings. They were too fluffy and comforting-looking to cut an imposing figure or scare anyone beyond the initial element of surprise. He had never been the best at using them for what they were intended for either. Flying. It was even stupider than wings.
"What's this got t'do with losin' a spar?"
Tel snorted. "A spar. Fancy."
"That's just what they call 'em at—"
"Shut up. It's not important. The answer is everything has to do with losing a spar. Or winning. Imagine... I don't know... smacking someone who's charging at you with a big old adorable wing. Or grabbing someone else and dropping them out of the sky to stun 'em. It's the same as using anything else you've got. Any advantage is a good one."
