Lil-Jo KatrinaZ My cat, Kyo, is not allowed to go outside. He's only tried to get out two times since we adopted him 3 years ago. I heard that the average lifespan of an indoor cat is 12-15 years, and only 3-5 years for an outdoor cat. No one told Midnight this... he is my daughter's cat, we have had him for 12½ years, the shelter guessed him at 3+ yrs old when we got him. We know he is at least 15, he is over weight, he is an indoor/outdoor cat... Yeah, I don't think the life expectancy variation is quite that drastic. It IS a big difference, but I think it's more like 8-10 years for outdoor cats. I could definitely be wrong, but 3-5 is really short. Maybe that's what it is for more urban areas (where there's a lot of vehicle traffic and people around). That's also for cats who are outdoors exclusively -- cats who don't have somewhere inside and safe to sleep, which makes a big difference.
Note: Out of curiosity, I tried to look up life expectancy on Wikipedia. I ran out of time to find numbers for outdoor cats, but they listed indoor cats at 14-20 years. I grew up with 2-3 cats at a time, and all of ours lived to be closer to 20 (they probably averaged 1 cool . Apparently, the record is 36!!! I thought that was interesting, so I thought I'd share. 3nodding

Almost all the cats I've known have lived to be 17-18 years old, whether they were let outside or not. I once had a great aunt who's [indoor] cat lived to be 24 years old. His name was Baby and he weighed in at 22 pounds!

my guys can come and go as they please (thank gawd for cat doors!) I would hate it if they were always out or always in. They like to sleep inside, generally on my bed. AAAAaaaand a huge plus for in/out cats is no litter box!
I have a bird feeder outside my front door with a window (with a box under it for the kitty's pleasure) so the boys can watch the birds. They love to sit there and watch, even found Eddie asleep with his head leaning against the window one day. What a goof! xd

LadyJ86 @Tess: I love the signature! Me too! My mom sent me an email with that series of photos at work one day, and I saved them all off onto the hard drive. I love it cut out like that though! rofl
@Tess Good point about the litterbox. That reminds me that I need more litter for my boys. It's a shame you didn't get a picture of Eddie asleep at the window! That must've been adorable!

Deathcraft Averna, nice avatar smile Well thank you very much Deathcraft! I like how simple yours is... I feel almost like you need a smoking jacket with it though hehe. Or maybe that's not meant to be a cigar. wink

LadyJ86 @Tess: I love the signature! thanks! The tiger's name is Odin and he is actually underwater - the original before I messed with it. He scrunches his face like that to close his nose so he won't get water up it! here are a couple of others:
