Queen
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Black Sabbath (inc. Ozzy Osbourne)
The Sex Pistols
Yes
Pink Floyd
Eric Clapton
AC/DC (really - most of the original lineup were Scottish)
Iron Maiden
The Who
Thin Lizzy
Dire Straits
Oasis
Blur
Jamiroquai
Muse
Genesis
The Clash
Peter Gabriel
The Kinks
David Bowie

In fact, the defining, founding band in every rock genre except Nu-Metal has been British. I'd hold that except America, except that Nu-Metal ultimately arose from Faith No More copyists, and FNM themselves weren't actually nu-metal. In fact, they were very very good.

I'd also like to point out that The Who were releasing proto-punk songs in the early 1960s. I wouldn't say they were the first punk band, but they did have a heavy influence on the formation of the genre. Check out songs like 'My Generation', which also happened to feature the first recorded bass solo. Fun fact.

My opinions on your Big List:
Erix Griffon
Queen Yay!
Led Zeppelin Half-yay. Very good at their best, but can get annoying in overly large quantities.
The Beatles Uberyay!
Black Sabbath (inc. Ozzy Osbourne) Meh. Not so keen.
The Sex Pistols Haven't actually heard a lot, but supsect that ce n'est pas mon truc.
Yes Yay!
Pink Floyd Yay!
Eric Clapton Haven't heard a lot, but I would think I'd like.
AC/DC (really - most of the original lineup were Scottish) Have to confess, I haven't heard a lot of their stuff either.
Iron Maiden Not really my thing, again.
The Who ...don't know [/shame]
Thin Lizzy Never heard them, but I've heard their good.
Dire Straits Heard a lot about them, but never heard them.
Oasis Really not so keen. They're just rather uninventive bog-standard rock. Wonderwall is a rather bad song which is good nonetheless. (Like Tubthumping by Chumbawamba or MmmmmmmmBop! by Hanson)
Blur Heard very little, but really like what I hae heard.
Jamiroquai I honestly don't know.
Muse Really like their all-out apocalalyptic stuff, but they have some other songs I'm not so keen on.
Genesis Never even heard of them.
The Clash Not heard a lot. (See The Who).
Peter Gabriel Hmmm. eek
The Kinks Yay with a big fat cherry on top.
David Bowie (See Blur)

Nor could most of us, that's why it's a salute to great British bands, as opposed to a "wat've yeh bin lisnin' to recently" thread.

I know, that's where I first saw the video for their song "Evil".

That video is the creepiest, coolest video I have ever seen.

Bar possibly 'just', by radiohead.

I prefer the one to 'slow hands' myself.

The chap from Evil bears more than a passing resemblance to an English-teacher at our school..

Wow. We really are fabulous as a nation, aren't we? Or we were, at least. On the music front anyway.
