I've been thinking of making a 40k chess board. Space Marines vs. Chaos Space Marines. Here's the lineup.

Pawns: Troops
Rooks: Heavy Support
Knights: Fast Attack
Bishops: Elites
King and Queen: HQ

Any suggestions?

I had a similar idea. for mine, though, its just the Forces of the Imperium vs. The Forces of Chaos.

Pawns: Imperial Guard-Mutated Traitor Guard
Rooks: Space Marines- Chaos Space Marines
Knights: Jump Troops- Chaos Raptors
Bishops: Commissars- Daemons
Queen: Sister of Battle leader- Female Clutist
King: Chapter Master- Daemon Prince

Hmm, I just think that having the white pieces in the same army and vice versa is easier. Alliances are hard to forge in the 41 Millenium.

I too have thought about this before.

Marines versus Chaos would be easy really. Just keep in mind this is Chess, so it's not prefectly accurate.

King - Commander/Lord in Terminator Armour (Slow but important)
Queen - Librarian/Sorceror (Most poweful HQ option on a 20mm base)
Bishop - Chaplain/Apostle (Religious zealot)
Knight - Jump Troop/Raptor (Can fly over units)
Rook - Champion/Posessed (Strong veterans)
Pawn - Marine/Chaos Marine (Basic trooper)

You could paint the Chaos Marines in black and the Space Marines in white to further enhance the chess style.

These are all great ideas! I'll give them some serious thought.

I've thought of it, you could have a different set of pieces for every army.

You mean like inter-army skirmishes? Hmm, that's interesting....

This is an idea had before too, but never felt like doing (i can be lazy).

Refresh me if my chess memory is off, but the rook can move in a straight line across the board. And thats the one represented by the tower usually, right? If so, due to the movement, and starting position on the board, I had always thought fast attack infantry like jump pack marines would be appropriate.

Yeah, but Bishops can do exactly the same thing, only diagonally. So I said Raptors for Knights because they can jump over pieces in a 2-down-1-across motion. Or a 1-down-2-across, if you're going to nitpick. That's regardless of peices in the way.

Heres my take on a tau side

Pawns: kroot
Rooks: stealth suits
Knights: vespids
Bishops: firewarriors
King: ethereal
Queen: shadowsun

I didnt know what to put for bishops but I figure there have to be firewarriros so I decided that that would be a bishop, everything else is based on thier place in the greater good/ there characteristics.

What about the Battlesuits? Broadsides would make excellent Rooks. Pathfinders could be Pawns as well
I also feel that a commander, but not a named one, should be the Queen.

I agree, it shouldn't be a named commander as Queen. Ethereal as King is good.

Firewarriors shouldn't be Bishops, they'd be tiny, and the Pawns should be small.

Pathfinders are a relatively rare unit in a Tau army, so I don't think they should be the Pawns and Kroot are a bit tall. I think maybe Fire Warriors should be the Pawns.

Oh and Stealth Suits as Rooks.
I don't think that'd work being that Rooks aren't stealth, by all means.
