About Tempy:

Hello there, art mentors and mentees! The name is Tempy and I'm 18 years old. I've been drawing since I was very young - or so my parents say. However, I've been taking art seriously for about 3-4 years now. I'm majoring in drawing at the Minnesota College of Art and Design this fall. I'll be a freshman in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program. Later, I plan to transfer to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
:]

Critiquing Guidlines:

Be as -cough- brudal -cough- ...honest as possible. I really would like to know what's on your mind. Please give as much detail as you can. I'd like to know what needs to be changed, fixed, and/or improved on. Thanks muchly.

Nice artwork.

What do you use for your charcoal portraiture?

Criticism:

-I think you should learn some Head anatomy as in 'Gross anatomy' learn the facial muscles, its location and how it relax and constrict during facial movements. Any medical anatomy books will help.

-Learn some technique. The way I see it, your work is done with charcoal [sticks/pencil and powdered] applied with cotton and brush, right? I could be wrong, anyway a technique like hatching, cross hatching etc... can add some interesting texture to your work.

There are other hundred ways to make patterns other than hatching & C hatching... just experiment.

Usually just use charcoal pencils, paper stumps, tortillons, and my fingers.

I have learned the all facial muscles. I'm in an anatomy class.
However, I just can't quite grasp the technique.
It's probably my lack of experience.
I'll keep working on it.

Hmm, I've never really hatched and/or cross-hatched with charcoal before...
I should really give it a shot.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.
