I have always heard that anime conventions are fun, and you make so many friend there. However, I have never been to one, and don't know much about them. Plain truth is that I'm scared. I don't know what to expect. Could anyone answer my questions? Please?

My Questions:

1. Is the entire anime convention held in a single hotel? If not, where else?

2. Is it normal to cosplay around the hotel where most people are staying? How many people do you think cosplay at a regular convention?

3. Do you need a form of transportation around?

4. How in the world do I tell my parents that I, a thirteen year old girl, want to go to an anime convention about yaoi when I haven't even told them I like yaoi?!

Please help, I'm severly confused..

1. The one I went to, and am going to again this year, is held only in the hotel, yes.

2. It was normal at Zenkaikon.
No one was around really, except the staff members.
Most people were cosplaying, or had some sort of outfit.

3. Not that I'd know of.
Just to get thre and back, of course.

4. ..Good luck with that one! :'D

Ah, well... sweatdrop Everyone kind of sees me as a girl who does her homework, is a little bit eccentric, but is pretty much a 'good' girl (they should really check out my computer sometime XD). Anyway, if I told them that I was going to an anime convention somewhere off in California they would be like "WTF?".

Plus theres the fact that my family view anime as either 'cartoons' or 'Japanese-things' gonk

Hm. Miss Sushii is going to a 'con in Sweden next spring... or rather autumn there... (confusing timezones)
I've never been to one either! So I guess we are in the same boat! The one I'm going to is held in an unknown place... but they rent dormitories for the guests so that they can sleep over ^^ It's a three day convention <3
About question four... um. If your family is going with you, this might cause trouble.

If theyre not, just lie. It's the easiest way out (I'm going to hell, I know... but I doubt they have yaoi in heaven xD) Hide whatever you buy in innocent wrappings, and if they ask what "Shounen-ai" or "yaoi" or "BL" means, just tell them something random... you can say that "Shounen ai" means "Boy's anime" (almost not a lie!) and "BL" Stands for something japanese... just say something that SOUNDS japanese... like... um- BURIRORO? xD they'll never know. And tell them that "yaoi" is just comedy anime.
Problem solved biggrin (Don't worry, Miss Sushii's parents have no idea either... and so far I'm doing fine hiding everything from them!)

My step-brothers and step-Mom view anime as just some Japanese cartoon, too, which pisses me off. >__<;

Ahh, thank you so much ^^ They are not coming with me, no matter what. Now all I have to do is:

A.) Convince my parents to let me go.
B.) Convince them to fund it.
C.) Make my already anime-crazed best friend like yaoi in time for the convention twisted
D.) Finish writing the poetry for the art I'm selling w/ my friend smile

I actually told my parents when they first found me looking at the section in Borders labeled anime "Yaoi" that it meant Young Academics on Ice xd The weird thing was it worked o.O

Converting friends to yaoi. Miss Sushii is trying to..."fix" her friend Ash.
I already made one of my male friends GAY thanks to the yaoi xD
He now decorates his website with pink flowers.

1. Is the entire anime convention held in a single hotel? If not, where else?
Depends on the con. Some of them are held in single hotels. Others, like Otakon, are held in convention centers, and some may be spread out over a couple close-to-each-other hotels, like AnimeNEXT.

2. Is it normal to cosplay around the hotel where most people are staying? How many people do you think cosplay at a regular convention?
If a lot of the con-goers are staying in the hotel, then yes, cosplay will be expected around. If you're eating in a hotel restaurant and have large props or a slightly risque outfit, you might want to eat then go back to your room to change, but you don't have to drag your stuff to the con and dress there.
At an average con, I'd say around 30-40% of the attendees cosplay.

3. Do you need a form of transportation around?
Only to get there and back, unless the convention hall is for some reason a great distance from any food or hotels. But you can take a bus then.

4. How in the world do I tell my parents that I, a thirteen year old girl, want to go to an anime convention about yaoi when I haven't even told them I like yaoi?!
No suggestions there. x: You could just cross your fingers and straight-out ask to go, only explaining the subject if they ask. They might be more likely to act like it's a big deal if you do.
But, the only yaoi convention I know of is 18+ only. Where are you planning to go?

Thank you so much ^^ That really helped.

Anyway, I have asked my parents if I could go and our conversation went like this:

Me: So.. um.. Mom, how was your day?
Mom: It was ok.
Me: So, anyway, do you know that trip I was planning on taking at the end of the year?
Mom: Yes, the one to California?
Me: Yea... anyway, I've decided I want to go to an anime convention.
Mom: That's great! Sure, I will pay ^^
Me: o.O Really?
Mom: Of course.
Me: I was also thinking of cosplaying.
Mom: What's that?
Me: Dressing up as a favorite character. I think I want to go to as Kairi from Kingdom Hearts.
Mom: Sounds fun! So, do you want me to find someone to custom design your outfit?
Me: O.O

I was so shocked. Whatever happened to her? I've never even told her I like anime. Well, once maybe before, but very, very briefly.

Now all to do is tell her I like yaoi. Eh, if she took that well, I'm hoping for the best on this.
