Whats the difference between yaoi, slash, and shonen-ai? I feel really stupid for asking, but i just don't get it. Can someone explain? Please?

Shounen ai is boy-boy relationships.
Yaoi is the same as shounen ai, however it includes sexual relationships.
Slash, is the act of pairing two characters together and defines which male plays what role in the relationship.
ex. Sasu/Naru Sasuke is the seme and Naruto is the Uke
Naru/ Sasu Naruto is the seme and Sasuke is the Uke
Sasu/Naru/Sasu means that they switch. Part of the time one is the Uke and other times is the Seme.

Um, if people want to correct me on this then please do. This was simply the way I thought to define it.

eh, I might be wrong too, but who's on top is defined by which way the pairing is listed(the one listed first is on top, the one next is on bottom. I'd assume it would work that way for threesomes too? neutral ). it doesn't really matter in fics without the, y'know, smut, but it does in smut!fics. xD which is why I always call my KH OTPs Soriku, Axiku and Roxiku. -shot-

There's a lot more on wikipedia.

It's usually done in ones without sex to show which the author is portraying as dominant emotionally..

There's a sticky thread above this one that's titled 'Dictionary' which defines all these words with their general agreed-upon definitions.

These are the definitions of the words you asked for from the sticky:

Quote:
Shonen-ai/shounen ai: This is a mixed up word in the fandom. It literally means "Boy Love," but I have heard that it is an outdated term in Japan and is taken to mean the same thing as Shota. However, do not quote me on this as it is just what I heard. It's taken to mean, however, particularly in the west, a homosexual relationship between men that does not depict graphic sex. See BL.

Slash: A term used by fans to describe same sex couples for the western hemisphere fandoms (not anime/manga). Can also refer to female/female relationships as well as male/male. Examples: Harry Potter slash, NOT yaoi.

Yaoi:
1. Graphic Male/MaleZ
2. Ouch, my butt hurts

If you have any other questions about terms, see if they're listed in the Dictionary sticky. That's what it's there for wink

i never really pay attention to the differences, because i never care what kind of relationship it is as long as theyre happy XD i just say yaoi or shonen-ai in general, usually.... example: ive read TsuSoka slash, shonen-ai, and yaoi, so i just say theyre my favorite yaoi pairing to be general... and i think of every pairing that way. its either yaoi, yuri, or het. none of this "they only do this so its just this" because then it gets confuzzling neutral (lol)
