this is what I do whenever my family is barbecuing hamburgers:

I take one big portabella mushroom, cut off the stem, then sprinkle some vegetable oil on the underside. You can also sprinkle on some worchester (sp?) sauce to give it more of a hamburger flavoring, but I don't think that its vegan-safe. *makes mental note to check ingredients*

Anyways you can just grill the mushroom up with the hamburgers, and It tastes GREAT. Its much more hamburger-like than veggie burgers, in my opinion. At least it doesn't taste so much like vegatables...

there is vegan worcestershire sauce available in some stores. I think it is called The Wizards Organic Vegan Worcestershire Sauce.

worchester sauce is not vegan safe. Hell its not vegetarian safe. The main flavour in worchester sauce is fish. Thats right, it has meat in it.

Yeah...worcestershire sauce is made mainly from anchovies.

Wikipedia
Vegetarian substitutions

Vegetarian and gluten free alternatives are available; the vegetarian variety omits the anchovies (notably Henderson's Relish). 'Life' Worcester sauce, produced by MH Foods (Morehands Ltd), is both vegetarian (no meat, no fish) and suitable for coeliacs (no gluten ingredients). Angostura also offers a fish-free sauce, but doesn't advertise itself as "vegetarian."

There are also fish-free sauces produced for the Kosher market - not because anchovies aren't kosher, but because of an Orthodox prohibition on eating meat and fish together. These versions can then be used in recipes featuring meat.

It appears that Worcester sauce powders are vegetarian. The powder produced by Nikken Foods contains no meat or fish, nor the one produced by Provesta Flavour Ingredients.

eeks, I'm sorry. D:

that was an old thing i was doing back before i became much more careful about what i eat.

luckily, it works just as well without the sauce though. I'll have to keep my eyes open for the vegan kind though...

As a non-vegan, I add some blue cheese crumbles just before taking the portabella off the grill. VERY yummy!

Sadly, though, portabellas don't cook on George Formans very well.

Actually, I think veggie burgers taste better than hamburgers... And unfortunately, I don't like mushrooms. Still, that's innovative! I never would have thought of that! 4laugh

I was nearly tricked into eating a real burger by saying it was vegan just because some people don't know how to make one or to even bother buying them! I could tell though, veggies don't bleed
