Personally, Nightwish is my favorite band on this earth (I have one of their songs playing in my porfile if you want to hear some of their work). Finntroll is another excellent Finnish metal band, and check out Moonsorrow if you end up liking Finntroll. I really love Finnish metal!
A few other good bands:
Children of Bodom (not as good as the previous three, but not bad)
Old Man's Child (pretty typical death/black metal, except I think the vocalist is actually skinny...)
Lacuna Coil (similar to Evanesence, but better. not as good an Nightwish, though)

Bauhaus, Souixsie & The Banshees, Joy Divison, Specimen, Christian Death, Alexisonfire, In Flames, Broken Social Scene, David Bowie, Killing Joke, Men Without Hats, The Smiths, New Order, The Arcade Fire, and we'll top it off with a pinch of Theatres Des Vampires.

You have like, indie, gothic rock, metal, new wave, dance-pop, screamo, and some post-punk mixed up there. XD

Well, it seems you already have Nightwish.

If you like them, however, you'll most likely like these bands as well:

Mortal Love
Epica
Leaves' Eyes
Kamelot
Within Temptation

Other bands for you to check out would be some Moonspell, Moonsorrow, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, Iced Earth, Virgin Black, Borknagar, Agathodaimon, Dimmu Borgir, Dog Fashion Disco - if you want something way odd in the metal scene -, DragonForce, Tristania, Theatres des Vampires, etc...

I just listed the metallic types, since that's what you wanted. Rock is too generic of a genre for me.

If you're looking for good metal, you can't go wrong with Judas Priest 3nodding
Slayer and Bleeding Through are also some good examples of metal

As for rock, I suggest Sex Gang Children, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cinema Strange, and The Cure

Voltaire: everyone's favourite nutcase (hey, anyone who can make a hellacool song about a zombie prostitute is alright by me)
Angtoria
Breed 77
In flames
Katatonia
Khoma
KMFDM
Misfits
Rammstein
Switchblade Symphony (more synthy than rock/metal)

And pretty much anyband mentioned above as well, Children of Bodom, Dimmu borgir, Lacuna coil, Nightwish, The Cruxshadows, *anything MortSanglant said; those were real good*, Apocalyptica (classical covers of metal songs, where can you go wrong?)
