"Shipping" comes from the word "Relationship" So, when you're Shipping, you pair off couples into a relationship. Like for example, in Harry Potter, I would 'ship' HarryxDraco.
Did that help any?

Shipping is just the pairing up of two (..or more) characters. There are different forms of the word too.
shipping: the act of pairing them up shipper: the person who does this ship: the pairing itself (or used as like, "I ship Jake and Frank..") And, probably, etc.
Some pairings have their own "shipping names" too.. Palletshipping (Gary/Ash, Pokemon), Puppyshipping (Kaiba/Joey, Yu-Gi-Oh)..

Chan2000 so what woild little yugi's ship? or naruto's? There are many shippings. There is no official ship in fandom though there are many different ships (Sasuke/Naruto, Sakura/Lee and so on). The closest you get to that are the canon pairings (the characters that were paired off by the author). I’d use an example in Naruto or YGO but I just realized that no one actually gets with anyone in either of the series. XD The guild has a Dictionary thread for such questions. Please refer to it next time first. ^^;

Is it the same with one sided canon? Uh, if that is an actual rule no one I know seems to follow it. In the Gundam Wing fandom you seem things like 1x2x1 or 3x4x3, all the time and those are NOT canon pairings.
