almost none
i love metal, so long as it isnt slayer and bands like that.
but whenever people ask me what kind of metal i like i have no clue
so could someone here please tell me what the types of metal are and describe them and/or give me an example or 2? thanks

I suggest that you give some metal bands you like. It'll be easier for us to categorize them.

Also, so you know, Slayer is in a metal subgenre known as thrash, an aggressive, bare-bones, "roots" style of metal developed in the early 90's. Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax are other bands of the same genre. Thrash has a large and devoted following, and some thrash fans consider thrash to be real metal, while other styles are not.

Genres are lame.

And it's even more lame that there are so many subgenres of metal, punk, etc...

Who cares what the genre.

What matters is the sound and meaning.

Classification of music is rather annoying.
That's why I like techno.
Doesn't matter what kind, I just want bass.

well, i dont like them much either, but its so annoying when all my friends talk about types of metal and i know nothing

and my favorite metal bands are oomph and rammstein and demon hunter
if that makes it any easier

personally i dont consider slayer real metal, but thats just me.
i think they sound like a punk rock/emo band type of music, just with screaming
they sound like the drum music was written without talking to the guitar music guy

Rammstein has fluctuated throughout their career:

Herzleid - Hard-rock
Sehnsucht - Arena Metal
Mutter - Heavy Metal
Reise, Reise - Hardcore Metal
Rosenrot - Symphonic Metal

Demon Hunter is generally considered metal, though, many do call it Chistian Metal (I myself don't consider subject matter in genre classification).

Genres make discussing music far easier. Some genres go too far in specificity, but honestly, if you're going to buy a CD of a band you've never heard, (for example) wouldn't you want to know if they're hair metal (a high-pitched, glam and pop influenced style of metal from the 80's) or death metal (an aggressive, masculine, screaming and loud form of metal)?

In my experience, genres make discussing music a big pain in the arse.

People get into so many arguments over genres. Granted most of these arguments stem from the fact that most people aren't genre 1337, and don't like to hear that a band they've classified as punk for as long as they've listened to them is really an emocore band. But even so, the concept of genres just gets a little too nitpicky for me.

And I wouldn't buy a CD of a band I've never heard for two reasons.

1. I don't buy CDs.

2. I don't buy CDs of music I don't know.

What a waste of money.
