I don't think I'm very good with photos, for several reasons:

1) I don't smile unless I'm feeling really happy, ergo in most pictures I don't smile
2) If I try to smile it looks stupid, unless it's genuine, therefore I can't force a smile
3) Due to 2, it seems a waste of energy to try and smile when it'll be futile and I'm more comfortable not using my muscles.

Don't try to smile genuinely. Make a stupid face (see my photograph in British Gaians: Show Your Faces); if nothing else, people will laugh.

It is because we are far too reserved.

That can transfer accross to 'grumpy looking' on a photot. We shouldn't give into the american expectation that grinning like an idiot somehow makes you look more attractive.
