hi i'm 5''7, female 14, and i weight 181lbs. my eventual goal is to be a toned 140lbs, but first i want to concentrate on getting into the healthy weight range which is 157lbs for me. then i would like to be slim so my next goal is to get to 150lbs, before i tone up and get down to a bikini-beautiful 140lbs.

for the moment, it's about getting down to 157 lbs and losing the excess fat. most of my flab is centred around my stomach, i have a big belly and love handles. my inner thighs are my next problem area, the tops of them rub, and i have about an inch of flab that i can pinch under my forearms. what combination of cardio/toning exercise would be good for me? i'm trying to get into a 30minute walk/jog everyday, and i have a yoga dvd but after a few uses of that i'm getting bored. should i do stomach crunches/squats/lunges or should i wait until i shed some of the fat first before i try to do that stuff? if i should do them, what should i do and how many reps and set, and how often?

please wb with advice.

Hi there!

I'm trying to do something similar at the moment - I'm trying to lose weight through cardiovascular exercise - then when I reach a weight I'm satisfied with - I'm going to try toning up.

At the moment I do aerobics - for 30mins 5 times a week and brisk walking - for an hour 5 times a week ( I can't jog/run...I hate it xD )

When you walk - have you tried listening to music as you walk and varying it? That might help.

Also with the workout video - I get bored of those as well - I try coming up with my own little routine that I will change from time to time to keep me interested.

You can do squats/crunches etc - but I would do it in moderation and begin slowly and then build it up - if you haven't done strenuous exercise before- as I have found - it's easier to strain yourself than you might think

Others in the guild may have better advice for exercises though - but I hope this helps a little.

At the moment I do a mix of low and high impact aerobics. I start with a small warm up, then stretches, then what I tend to do is use either a workout video - or come up with my own routine to music that I feel like I can jump about to. I used to go to dance classes when I was younger and also keep fit classes - so I kind of try and incorporate what I can remember from then into my 30mins.

You could try getting a workout/aerobics video and try following that for a while so you know how to warm up and what kind of exercises to do etc. Or you could join an aerobics class - I'm planning on doing that a bit later on when I feel as though I'm fit enough to cope with it xD.

Yeh, I know what you mean...a room of well toned, fit people would just make me want to reach for ice cream - that's why I'm not joining anything like that until I lose a bit of my belly first xD

Well, none of us are fitness experts so we can't really give you professional advice.

What I recommend, for now is aerobic exercise to start shedding the fat. After a while itll be a good idea to incorporate weightlifting and other resistance exercise in order to tone.

For aerobic exercise, the best way to start incorporating it in your life is by WALKING.

Yes, walking is the miracle exercise! Start walking every day, for about 30 minutes, at whatever pace you can handle. As you walk more, walk faster and choose routes that are tougher (uphill walking, etc.) I like to take walks around my neighborhood outside after dinner, but you might like to walk around a track at a park, or use a treadmill. NO MATTER WHAT, WALK AT LEAST 6 DAYS A WEEK.

On top of walking, try to start incorporating other aerobic exercise. Aerobics, step classes, things like this. If you have acess to a swimming pool, that's a great way to exercise in summer. If you like to dance, then you should dance like CRAZY for a while every day. XD You might feel stupid like, dancing around like crazy in your room, but you dont have to do it wher epeople can see you. Try other things like hula-hooping or jumproping or hopskotching. Sounds silly, but changing it up often will help keep you from getting bored XD

I hope this helps a little. You may want to try PILATES biggrin theyre REALLY hard at first but they feel REALLY good, and they help to tone your body by using the resistance of your own body, and creating long, lean muscles! You can get tapes or try enrolling in a course, once you feel more comfortable with that biggrin

I have the same problem, but for me the best workout by far is Water Polo, its VERY intense but its in the water so you dont sweat, or at least you dont get sweat stains biggrin or if you dont want to try a sport thats been called a mix of wrestling, soccer and swimming, its very fun but can be hard, other wise I'd reccomend swimming

Hello there! I'm actually trying to deal with the same problem areas myself, so these tips and suggestions are pretty helpful so far. I do appreciate the suggestions of walking and the swimming. I'm not big on classes- at least, I won't be until I manage to tone myself a bit so I won't look like a lost cause when I walk into a class. xD
