I was thinking it may be a good idea to put together a little guide, for fans with homophobic guardians. Because really, just a slight mistake, and your out of manga for good. (It's happened. My friends mom found her reading FAKE, and she's out of Japanese culture for a loooong time. No manga, no Jrock, nothing. It may be extreme, but it's probobly happened to other people.)

Basically, just tips, tricks and hints for yaoi fans. How to inconspiciously buy manga, how to hide it, and shared-computer nightmare avoidence. So, please, submit a tip, any tip! Everything's useful!

Tip #1 If you're sharing a computer, make sure you use hide those files well! Use a non-suspicious file name, like Music.

Honestly though, if the manga/anime/pictures are too adult in nature they shouldn't have them to begin with. If your using a computer that isn't entirely your own you should never save any material onto it you wouldn't want anyone to see, and save it to a floppy disk. Images should be kept in ap hotobucket's account and NOT on your PC. It's asking for trouble.

If your underaged you shouldn't save anything, do NOT save fanfiction. Parents love trying to find their kids 'journals' ont he PC.

Manga? If it's 16+ or 18+ don't buy it (the stores will let you.) If your parents see your 13, and the manga says 16+ they are going to be, Hmm, I wonder why.

Buy clean manga's as well and show -these- to your parents, be open with them about liking Manga if you can and show them the clean ones. That way they wont' be suspcious asbout the shounen-ai manga you may have.

I'm with Mistress on this one. Perhaps it's because I'm older, I don't know.

But if you are sharing your computer with anyone, don't put things on it that you don't want found.

If I was a parent, and I do plan to be sometime soon, I would be more likely to allow my children to read more "adult" material if they brought it too me first, rather than hiding it from me.

I agree with Paco. It's generally best if you get the softer stuff. M/M is one thing parents might be able to accept, a minor looking at porn is another.

Of course, I didn't follow that advice, but my parents didn't want me looking and drawing that kind of stuff in their house even after I turned 18. I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons they kicked me out.

If you're dealing with homophobic parents that freak out even at the softer stuff, best way to go about it is to delete your temporary internet files and history after you get off. NEVER stay logged in to accounts where they can access s/a communities or personal journals talking about m/m.

My parent's are weirded out by my hobby, but my mom accepts it at least. I think my step-mother blames me for getting my half-sister into BL, but I only admitted to my sis that I liked it AFTER she asked me.

If you want to watch yaoi anime when someone else is around, use headphones. Moaning is a sound that attracts attention, and we all know that ukes like to moan a lot.

When reading yaoi manga, always have a 'safe' application running in the background, for example an internet browser with some harmless content or a text editor with a few paragraphs already written. If someone suddenly enters your room, you can quickly hide the dirty stuff and pretend to be doing something else.

Firefox is a good browser for reading yaoi manga. All you have to is switch to another tab.

AOl is good for that. But be careful: if the site or filename of what your reading is obviously dirty, they WILL notice.

It's true about firefox. Have something innocent yet not suspiciously so going that you can switch to in a second. If it's possible, close the door to the room the computer is in. That way, you'll be alerted to the presence of someone entering and have more time to shut down something really incriminating. If a tab or open file name says something that would put your parents on alert, shut it down. Better to be safe than banned from the internet until you move out.
If it's possible, have your own user section on the computer. Preferably the admin one. If they have the admin one, they can crack your password and get in anyway, but unless you give them a good reason they probably won't. Unless they actually go into your user section, incriminating urls that you forgot to wipe and such won't be a problem. They may not even realize they can get to your section if they have the admin profile, if they're computer illiterate.
Sharing a computer with siblings is a larger problem than with parents, because most often your siblings know more about computers. If you share a computer with a computer wizz sibling? No precaution is too great. Sometimes they will look through your files because they are bored. It doesn't end well.
If you have manga that would cause problems with your parents if found, hide it. Not in an obvious place like under your bed, because that's where they always look. Put it somewhere they wouldn't go unless their attention was called to that place for some reason. Where that would be changes from parent to parent.
It is much safer to get manga than anime in most cases. You can read it without drawing a lot of attention to it. Watching a DVD in your lounge room, it is impossible for them not to see what it is you're watching. Reading is much safter. Get safe anime and manga to show them and talk about so that they don't get suspicious.
Something very important is: Don't make it look like you want to hide something. If they think you're trying to hide something from them, the odds are they will try and find what it is.

My dad is a hgue a** homophob... I want sensitive pornograph and things like that so bad but my dad is against porn.. I do plan on buying it without telling because well, I don't care if he thinks I'm a perv or not its my life! I'm almost 16. I do have yami no matsuei and graiv and my dad ahs watched gravi where yuki ksises shucihi and stuff and he mostly laughed it off. I was embarressed to watch yami no matsuei wtih him but ah well, I am embarressed to watch straight things with him. like thigns on tv! I do have a lot of thigns he would not like, but I hide them well ^^ I say this, be VERY sneaky!!! Until you know your parents won't care by leaving hints XD

Another little tip; As a minor it's quite impossible to buy harder yaoi. So, do not try. You could get in serious trouble if you're caught. Just think of harder yaoi as something to look forward to, when you get older!

Now, I've read people saying if you're young, not to buy BL at all. I personally find that quite impossible. However, if your parents come in your room and go through your things regularly, this may be the best thing to do. If you seriously need your shonen-ai fix, then buy stuff with feminine ukes. So, if worst comes to worst, you can claim that they're a girl.

It's impossible? I'll say it isn't cool, but I've never been carded at Barnes and Noble with my hard-core yaoi. I don't think they're allowed to, and most of them don't know what it is anyway.

But if your parents are against it, don't. It's not worth it when they get mad at you. If my parents weren't divoriced, and if I wasn't almost an adult anyway (I just turned 1 cool , my mom would have had me shipped me off the moment she found my collection.

If you want to risk it, hide your books among other ones. Yaoi anime looks innocuous when it's in a pile of straight manga. If you want to download, change the names on your files, and put them in strange folders like "My eBooks" or anything else you wouldn't use, or bury them in program files.

If you go into the history, you can also delete the sites you visit. Don't do anything in Internet Explorer, because if you search it sometimes pops up in other searches.

Its wise to own a lot of straight manga, if anyone asks what you read, yo can show them that instead.

Also, if you have stuff saved on your computer, password protect EVERYTHING!

It helps, cos my musm mate hacked into our comp and found out what I had saved, but now I passworded everything, he don't see a thing, XD
