(✿) History Book
‣ "When seven hearts are withered by the hand of love, the child of flames will return home."
‣ Behind every curse is a story. Qílín's begins long ago when he was born from the flames of Purgatory. Like all his kind, Qílín was born without a name or identity of his own. A slave of the worlds' balance whose existence was given for the purpose of containing those souls who are sent to be purged of their sins on their way to Paradise or rebirth, Qílín's early existence was just that; duty to his purpose. An empty life without thought or will of burning away sin. A savior and executioner all at once. But, even with those restrictions, Qílín was always a little different than his brethren. He was born with a strange sense of curiosity. When he purged the sins or memories of Purgatory's inhabitants, he would find himself fascinated by the world they left. Through those memories and sins, Qílín's curiosity only grew and eventually, he desired to see their world for himself. To learn more about it and understand the souls that find themselves in Purgatory. By some stroke of luck, Qílín received the opportunity when a fluke gateway between Purgatory and the world of the living opened. He took it, shattering his way passed the barrier meant to contain them.
‣ Thus began Qílín's life in the land of mortals and the curse that will drag him back to his abandoned life. At first, for a time, Qílín lived a life of learning and fascination. He studied the world's creatures and the structure of how the land functioned. He was uninterested in the humans for a while. But, the first love he experienced was with a human. Qílín met her near a river where she was cleaning a harvest and the moment he saw her, it was as if a floodgate opened. It scared him at first, all the emotions that were let in, but he learned through her that they were nothing to fear. In fact, once Qílín accepted them, he became stronger. But, his time with her was short. Over time, Qílín's mind deteriorated and he became violent. Soon enough, he became a threat to the people of her village and had to put down. By her hand, Qílín's first heart was destroyed and he entered a deep slumber. The first of many yet to come.
‣ When Qílín awoke, his ordeal started again. Having had his memories of his first love sealed, he had no way to protect himself from the curse that had been placed on him. His heart was open and willing from the moment his eyes opened from his recovery. This made it easy for him to fall in love a second time. This time with a fellow demon that, like him, had learned to open himself to feeling and wished to break away from the confines of his breed. It was this demon that gave Qílín his name as well as had the sword Zhàn Lú forged for him. Unlike with his first lover, Qílín's time with the demon lasted centuries. They were a feared pair that defended the lands of China together. This is where the legend of the qílín beast began, having morphed over the years to merge him and his lover into a single entity rather than the two that were once worshiped. Yet, just like before, Qílín's mind eventually fractured and he was once again subdued by the hands of his lover. Another deep sleep ensued and only when his lover departed the world of the living has Qílín awakened a third time.
‣ This was a century ago, at the least, and he's come to land of Japan to learn more of the world.
(✿) How I Feel
‣ Qílín is, as legends of the beast in Chinese mythology describe, a gentle and benevolent being with a strong appreciation and compassion for life. He believes no life is a waste or insignificant or wrong; even while he travels, Qílín will rarely ever touch the ground to avoid harming even a single blade of grass. He's not naïve, however. He understands that some lives need to be put out, but even when defeating an enemy, Qílín mourns for them. Perhaps because of this nature of his, Qílín is also a friendly and social person that prefers the company of others over the companionship of loneliness. He gets sulky when alone for too long. He's humorous, or at least likes to think he is, and is the caretaker type. Qílín is typically the one to take responsibility for others' care if in a group setting, almost stubbornly so, but he's also not the kind to overwrite another's choices. A person's life is their own and so are their choices. Unless their decision will get them killed or has a very high chance of doing so, Qílín has no reason to interfere and remains respectful of a person's independence and will.

‣ Hellfire
tab ‣ Qílín is able to utilize the dark mass of his Hellfire in battle as a weapon. This is how all of his kind fight and like them, the majority of his offensive abilities are carried out through his Hellfire. It's a flexible ability and can take any form he desires.
‣ Zhàn Lú
tab ‣ A sword of benevolence fitting for a master like Qílín. It's a Zanbatō with a blade as dark as his Hellfire and longer than his own body, but despite it's intimidating appearance, it's harmless to the innocent. Zhàn Lú is only able to harm those that deserve it or those that need to be set free and if used on those who don't meet the requirements, the sword will phase right through them. Other than that and its indestructibility, Zhàn Lú has no special properties or powers. Anyone can wield it, but those meaning to cause harm to those undeserving of Zhàn Lú's metal will quickly find it to be useless to them. For this reason, Qílín can be largely unbothered if it happens to get lost.(✿) This Is My Style

tab ‣ Because of his connection to Purgatory, languages come easy to him. He doesn't need to learn to speak or understand a new one; inherently, he already knows it.
‣ Form Shifting
tab ‣ Due to taking the likeness of the last soul he purged, Qílín is able to change his physical appearance to that of any of the life stages achieved by the soul. This particular soul died of old age, so Qílín has an entire lifetime of faces to choose from.
‣ Soul Perception
tab ‣ Qílín can perceive and read the souls of others, whether free or in body. He can study and observe the nature of one's soul and find weaknesses based what he learns. By reading souls, Qílín can see/feel the being's characteristics, personality, feelings, memories, whether they even have a soul, damage others' souls have endured, and whether or not another entity is possessing or influencing the person on a spiritual level. He can't, however, manipulate a soul to his will. Not that he ever would even if he could. How well he reads a soul depends entirely on how focused he is with his reading; otherwise, it is passively used to avoid being snuck up on.
‣ Resurrection
tab ‣ This is a form of immortality that all members of his kind have. When killed, Qílín is able to self-resurrect and with each resurrection, he becomes stronger than he was before. This is what makes his kind so formidable. More grievous deaths require more time to recover from but it will always happen.
‣ Cauterize
tab ‣ An accelerated healing ability that uses Hellfire to cauterize his wounds. It can't fully heal injuries inflicted by others' Hellfire or holy power. Naturally, it can't be used on anyone else unless they're also a Hellfire Spirit.
‣ Hellfire Skin
tab ‣ The only defensive form his power takes. When condensed into a single area, Hellfire becomes a near impenetrable shield that deflects most damage and protects him from harm. It can also be used to add strength to his kicks and punches.
‣ Inferno
tab ‣ In Purgatory, this ability is used to incinerate the sins and memories of souls. In the living world, it is not to be used lightly. Due to the nature of Hellfire, the Inferno technique has the capability of becoming an inextinguishable wildfire that will continue to burn until there is nothing left to burn; which, in this case, are the very souls of every living entity it comes into contact with. Even in his most unstable of mindsets, Qílín will never use this ability unless he is alone with his enemy and in a place made mostly of or surrounded by stone and with very little life to endanger.
‣ Pressure
tab ‣ Qílín converts his spiritual energy into a suffocating aura that immobilizes anyone within range. The weaker they are, the harder they find it to breathe and are often forced to the ground. Stronger entities in its field may be able to resist its effects.
‣ Reformation
tab ‣ By using the Hellfire that exists throughout his body, Qílín can reassemble himself if he's dismembered in some way.

(✿) I Love You
‣ Qílín is available, though he's not actively looking and has no particular interest in anyone. He is omniromantic asexual.
(✿) I Can Tell You More
‣ In spite of his gentle nature, Qílín is selfish. He knows he's not meant to be in the world of the living and he knows that if left unchecked, his Hellfire can become an apocalyptic threat. But, he's selfishly holding on to his desire to experience the world despite all that.
‣ Qílín remembers the curse as well as his lost memories for the brief time between the destruction of a heart and slumber. There's really no telling why as that shouldn't happen, but he does.
‣ Some things from his previous "lives" do carry over, such as the name given to him by his second lover or his belief that everything, even grass, has life of its own that was planted by his first. Curses aren't perfect. Or, maybe Purgatory is letting things slip through for him. Who knows. Qílín certainly doesn't.
‣ His body isn't "his". As a spirit being of Purgatory, he doesn't have a form of his own. In order to manifest in the living world, he needed a body. So, he took the likeness from the last inhabitant he purged. It's worth noting his form, despite being male, is physically sexless.
‣ He has a pair of antenna-like hair on his head. For some reason, playing with them will put him in a cuddly mood.
‣ His tears and blood are black. This is because despite his physical form, he's still a being born from the flames of Purgatory and the inside of his body is hollow save for his hearts. It's just the dark flames that make up his existence. He can't physically cry or bleed and the phenomenon of it is just him going through the motions to seem more real.
‣ Qílín's physical form manifested with seven hearts, but two have been destroyed. This is the only way to truly kill him as his hearts don't regenerate even with Resurrection. Upon the destruction of his hearts, his physical form will die and he'll be returned to Purgatory. There are two scars on his torso from the destruction of his first two hearts.
‣ Yes, anyone can destroy his hearts. However, the curse only affects him if his hearts are destroyed by the ones that he has devoted them to. If a heart is destroyed by someone that doesn't meet that standard, he'll live and continue to function as he normally does; though, he may or may not enter survival mode depending on the circumstances.
‣ Though Qílín is a kind person, he can still be incredibly dangerous. Aside from being a Hellfire Spirit and becoming stronger with each "death" he experiences, there is also a period of time between life and death during a resurrection that leaves him in a state of survival. In this state, there is no friend or foe. Only threats. However, even while in this state, he won't attack if not threatened.
‣ In his survival state, it is possible to communicate with him despite his fractured mindset. While sudden movements and loud noises are triggers for his survival instinct, if one approaches him slowly and speaks calmly in a lower voice, he won't feel threatened. While it's unlikely he'll respond to what's being said, he can be calmed. He could even be influenced to assist in a fight.
‣ Qílín doesn't have fully functional taste buds. He can't taste food or drinks. The only thing he can taste is the sulfuric aftertaste of his Hellfire. Because of this, he's not a good cook even though he tries and when he eats something made by someone else, Qílín usually watches others for their reactions to see how he should react. He'll never react negatively, though.
‣ The curse that was afflicted onto him isn't a malicious one. In fact, it's surprisingly lenient. It ultimately boils down to Qílín not being meant for the world of the living and needing to return home to Purgatory. That can't happen until his physical form is killed, but the only one that could get close enough to him without being seen as a threat is the person he loves. Contrary to what may be speculated, the only thing the curse controls is that Qílín's hearts will be destroyed by the person he falls in love with and his memories being sealed upon each destroyed heart as a way of preventing him from closing off his emotions. Everything else is natural; it doesn't control his emotions and it doesn't cause his mind to deteriorate. The fact of the matter is, the curse is meant to save Qílín and protect the world of the living.
‣ Qílín's curse doesn't rely on two-sided feelings. All that matters is that he himself loves someone. It also doesn't need to be romantic love; it can be platonic or even familial, though these forms of love require an incredibly deep connection on his part seeing as Qílín naturally loves all life. The other person could hate him but as long as Qílín himself cherishes them above everything else, it's enough.
