Good Traits
tab • • 》 Placid — He usually behaves phlegmatically and doesn’t get easily upset or excited. He maintains a nonchalant, sometimes stern demeanour. It’s rare that you’ll ever see him lose his temper, laugh or even smile.
tab • • 》 Ambitious — When he sets his mind on a particular task or goal he tends to tenaciously pursue it.
tab • • 》 Forthright — He is somewhat frank with his words and prefers to be direct about what he means. He is confident and authoritative when he needs to be.
tab • • 》 Good-natured — Contrary to his stoic demeanour, he is actually personable and kind-hearted when given the chance to get to know him.
tab • • 》 Conscientious — Maintaining the disciplinary attitude of a soldier, Derek takes his assigned duties seriously and is completely committed to performing his tasks well. There’s no room for cutting corners with him.
tab • • 》 Reliable — Whenever he is appointed to a task, no matter what it is, he’ll see it through to the end. He rarely if ever abandons his assignments — even simple favours — unless it is impossible for him to complete it. He’ll sooner research whatever it is he’s unsure of and continue to try to produce the best results.
tab • • 》 Earnest — Whatever it is Derek commits himself to he has a tendency to see it through with conviction. There’s never a moment were he feels like giving up.
tab • • 》 Sympathetic — He understands that everyone has their unique struggles and suffering as he has been through a fair bit himself. Although he's not too good at handling people’s complex emotions with tact, it bothers him to see others looking sullen or worked up.
Bad Traits
tab • • 》 Taciturn — Unless he is required to by his job, Derek prefers to remain quiet, saying very little to others if he can help it. Truthfully he is terrible at small talk and finds he has very little in common with others.
tab • • 》 Somber — He maintains a professional and somewhat serious demeanour that belies his dismal side. Outside of work he struggles with depression and feels somewhat disconnected with the rest of the world. Inwardly he tries to hang onto a sense of purpose in spite of his looming nihilistic thoughts. He questions whether some of his memories are real or not.
tab • • 》 Frugal — He doesn’t like spending money on himself or wasting food and for the most part only allows himself the bare minimum of what he needs to get by. He rarely indulges in anything, unless there’s an overt purpose behind it.
tab • • 》 Dipsomaniacal — Is a bit of a closet drinker and has a weakness for it. However he remains responsible.
tab • • 》 Pessimistic — After experiencing some extreme lows in his life (in addition to managing his ptsd from his time as a POW), Derek believes he has little to appreciate and leads a pretty guarded life, feeling as though it might be worthless to let anyone else in it. He swears his mind just makes up his fonder memories as he feels he’s never actually lived those moments.
tab • • 》 Rustic — He prefers the “old-school” way of doing things (such as taking notes on paper and writing letters in lieu of email) and begrudgingly struggles with figuring out more advanced technology such as the pokeGEAR or even something as simple as email. He is indifferent towards the finer things in life and don’t particularly care for any form of entertainment or hobby. Some describe Derek as boring and tasteless. (Infact his dorm at the Academy is completely bare, save for its original furnishings.) Truthfully he just never took the time to search these things out. Fortunately he is not against being introduced to new things.
tab • • 》 Selfless — Derek rarely looks out for himself and has penchant for putting others before him. He holds very little regard for his own being. He feels others have more to live for.
tab • • 》 Guarded — He prefers to keep his personal life private as he believes it’s a prerequisite for a more peaceful life.
Strengths
tab • • 》 Former Pilot: As a former fighter pilot for the Luftwaffe, Derek knows how to fly various aircraft ranging from helicopters to jets and even gunships.
tab • • 》 Military Training Regimen: Following the same strict training regimen from his military days, Derek uses it to boost the strength and stamina of the pokemon he trains, putting them a cut above the rest when compared to most ordinary training routines. This is partially how he was able to train pokemon for the service.
tab • • 》 Fighter: For the most part Derek is still physically fit and is able to handle himself in close combat.
tab • • 》 Gun-nut: He is also knowledgeable of most firearms and knows how to clean and maintain them in addition to being able to easily identify most pieces at a glance. Additionally, he’s a skilled marksman.
tab • • 》 Excellent Strategist: Knowledgeable of combat and battle manoeuvres, Derek is a skilled tactician who is able to keep a couple steps ahead of his opponents.
tab • • 》 Repairman: Having been trained to maintenance large aircrafts, Derek is something of a expert on repairing complex machinery or simple electronics.
tab • • 》 Conduct of a Soldier: Trained as a soldier, Derek doesn’t buckle under pressure and can easily take charge of a difficult situation. He also won’t stand for disruptions or any form of insubordination.
tab • • 》 Quick Learner: It’s almost uncanny how quickly he is able to pick up new skills and retain certain knowledge. This is part of what made him something of celebrity during his military academy days and a glorified ace for the Luftwaffe. Though for some reason, somethong as complex as a computer interface escapes him.
Weaknesses
tab • • 》 Introvert: Derek isn’t very good at connecting with others and it doesn’t help that he doesn’t seem like a very approachable person — which could deter some students. He’s somewhat aloof around others outside of his job.
tab • • 》 Handicapped: As an amputee he lacks the sort of finesse in motor skills he had the past, making him less ideal as a pilot. He also can no longer physically keep up with his pokemon while training. Chronic pain also prevents him from actively participating in his own training regimen. He swears he feels like he’s getting old much too quickly for his liking. He occasionally feels a sense of phantom pain and prefers a body powered prostheses to replace his missing arm.
tab • • 》 Rustic: He is somewhat old fashioned and unable to keep up with the latest technology. He struggles with email and even figuring out a cell phone as he is stuck in the past for some reason. He tends to encourage his students to take notes on paper rather then electronically.
tab • • 》 Despondent: Derek struggles with depression and even second guesses his own happier memories, thinking they aren’t real. He’s not very good at reaching out for help and tries to avoid situations where it might trigger his ptsd. Thankfully this side of himself doesn’t show through at work.
tab • • 》 Mysterious: Derek is a guarded person and rarely lets others into his rather empty life. He has no hobbies or interests outside of his work. He doesn’t seem to have any friends or family, either.

Biography
tab • • 》
In-depth: >> Born as “Gene Sullivan” in Munich, Germany, Sherfield graduated from the University of Bundeswehr at the age of 22 and immediately after joined the Luftwaffe following in his father’s footsteps. While stationed at Holloman, he quickly became recognised as a flying ace at a young age and frequently impressed the other officers, garnering a great deal of respect after earning several medals for his marksmanship and proficiency throughout his career as a fighter pilot. It was no surprise that he was able to ascend to the rank of a Major before the age of thirty, given his level of dedication and skill.
Interestingly enough, Derek was known to never fly alone as he always kept a Beldom with him in the cockpit —calling it his “co-pilot”— as the Pokemon possessed an amazing ability to process calculations far more accurately than his on-board equipment. During his downtime, Derek took to training many different pokemon that were sent to the base, however, the Steel/Psychic type, Beldom, would remain his favourite and most reliable. He was rarely seen without it during the remainder of his years within the service.
Sometime during his 24th reconnaissance mission, Derek’s Phantom II was shot down over enemy territory. He ended up breaking an arm and a leg when he ejected from from his aircraft and nearly drowned in a lake before enemy insurgents pulled him to shore. The Beldom (named Jeeg) that flew with him never ejected alongside him and was presumably destroyed along with his aircraft — to Derek’s greatest dismay. He was subsequently taken to an internment camp where his captors refused to treat his wounds and tortured and interrogated him almost daily. This brought Derek to the point of wanting to take his own life rather than divulge anything to his captures, however, his preparations were stopped every time. His left arm and right leg were eventually amputated when they became necrotic and only then he began to receive marginal care. Derek’s repatriation would not come until four and a half years later.
Upon returning to the United States, Derek was deemed unfit to remain with his squadron and was subsequently discharged from the military because of his wartime injuries. He received a Purple Heart and was given a Pokemon; a special silver Beldom, to commemorate his bravery and contribution to the service. This new Beldom would never replace the one he lost, but Derek would grow attached to it and train it just the same.
After discovering that his wife and child had vanished without telling him and every attempt to find their whereabouts mysteriously turned up no evidence —almost as if they never existed— Derek left his Texas residence and moved to Mistralton City in Unova, figuring he’d fly for the Mistralton Cargo Service once he recovered and mastered the use of his new prosthetics. It was around this time that he had changed his name, however, he couldn’t remember the full reason behind why or if it was even his decision to do so —his memory had seemed to become fragmented after surviving his time spent as a POW. Ever restless, he decided to capture and train pokemon during his recovery period and gradually began to travel the region collecting badges as show of how strong his pokemon were. Towards the end of his recovery, he decided to challenge the Unova region’s Elite Four and was able to become the new champion before he was eventually defeated by the renown, Antonio Reyes, whom Derek still regards with utmost respect, considering him an unparalleled and prestigious opponent. Curiously, Antonio did not choose to take over Derek’s Unova champion status, however, Derek shortly after stepped down anyway after having decided to retire his title in favour of returning to the skies. He felt fulfilled having met his toughest match as a trainer.
Returning to Mistralton, Derek became a pilot for the Mistralton Cargo Service and quickly became their best, despite his permanent injuries. For a time, working for them was enough to ally his depression, but while off duty his mind would wander to his missing family and his time spent as a POW. In order to distract himself, Derek began training pokemon for the service during his downtime which seemed to help. He eventually received an interesting offer from the same man who had defeated him a few years prior, inviting him to take on a teacher position at Ordell Academy; specifically to teach students about battling. It didn’t take Derek long to act on this offer, considering it a fortuitous and much needed change of pace. Derek accepted out of respect and admiration for Reyes and a chance to pass along his knowledge and training to a new generation.
TL;DR: >> Derek Sherfield is a former German Air Force officer who trained pokemon while off duty. He was discharged from the service when he sustained grievous injuries after he was shot down in enemy territory and spent four years a POW. During his arduous recovery Sherfield moved to Mistralton City and resumed his hobby of training pokemon and soon found himself traveling the Unova region collecting badges. On a whim he decided to challenge the region’s Elite Four and became the new Champion before hanging up his title shortly following his defeat. Upon returning to Mistralton City, he began to fly cargo for the Mistralton Cargo Service in addition to training pokemon for the military. A few years later he was offered a teaching position at Ordell Academy by Antonio Reyes, the same person who had defeated him when he was Unova’s champion. Now Derek wishes to pass along his training regimen and techniques in an effort to feel fulfilled while keeping his mind off his fragmented past.
