Jeremiah calls in a few favors (the first time he has done so, as far as he knows), the ones he's built up over the years from helping out those at the department and long standing working relationships. Though it is not really that uncommon - he almost always is working a case even if he's no longer a detective. Apparently his reputation in this reality for being too deep into his work is far, far worse.

He wonders whenever his other self had time to breath (but then again, he has little himself).

The favors? Running the fingerprints from the Charter through the system (would they show up at all?) and, of course, testing the blood that came from it as well (would it be his? would it be human? would it be someone related to him?). It meant he would be antsy for the time it took but they still had some time.

Not that he was sure just how much really was left in the hourglass.

information gathering! also probably would have been ICly the day after they got the charter which was ... back before the twelfth

Hey Chief,

Got those results back. Why're you making me look at your fingerprints??? And your blood. Dude. It probably came out of your own nose, sir, just saying.

Speaking professionally, all of those fingerprints look like they've been made in blood. Can you get the original? I can tell you more with it.

Cheers,

B. Au -

More like someone playing a rather elaborate prank, I think. I'll see about getting you better photos, if not some time with the actual thing.

Thanks for this information.

Jeremiah P. Mercer
Chief of Police

Jeremiah was breathing slowly with purpose as he had read through the notes. There were five fingerprints from unknown sources and one that was smudged. Yet what went through his mind was the fact that this was truly on them. They had created this issue in another life and it was, quite frankly, the exact kind of thing that he was concerned would happen.

They would have to face the actions made in another life. It was not the time for him to let that swallow him up (there was never time for that) and instead it was tucked away and he looked to the first three unknowns and the names after it. The three that were counterparts to Heliodora, Michael, and Adoelle.

Each one of them had existed, had lived, but only two were dead. Jeremiah looked it over one more time before he turned to his computer to if they had case files relating to Zhou Ming, Jennifer Wells, and Minerva Tailor Mercer.

(She was missing, his mind practically was shouting at him. So it was so very possible that his beta self had known her. Never mind the Tailor name that was also attached.

ilu, ur the best <3. if any kind of brief notes about the mentioned cases can be found/had, i will shower you in all the things. or, you know, 40 things so as to not be overwhelming.

Chief,

Those case files you requested. In summary:

Jennifer Wells disappeared in 2013, the same day as Minerva Tailor Mercer. They had been seen in each other's company in Salem, taking in the Halloween sights. Minerva was Jennifer's mentor through a public program for troubled youth. She was a student at Harvard Law. Several threatening messages were delivered to the Salem Police Department, each claiming something terrible had happened to Jennifer and Minerva. The final message, delivered in 2014, claimed that Jennifer was dead. Minerva's severed tongue was wrapped inside the paper.

Ming Zhou disappeared in 2015. Three months later, his shredded, bloody shirt was found in an ash pit. Due to the quantity of blood found at the scene and the lack of further clues, at the request of his family, he was legally declared dead.

Thanks for the files. Still working on getting you higher quality images of the fingerprints, if not a chance at the actual document.

Jeremiah P. Mercer
Chief of Police

Whatever he had been expecting, this was not it. Jeremiah read over the brief summary before he was opening up the case file pdfs (though there was something odd about the case file numbers but that would be later) and reading through.

The first thing on his mind to look for were the threatening messages.

shibroswol
what about those threatening messages? ... also ... what kind of public program for troubled youth? we talking ... alexis type situation here?

PostPosted: Thu Apr 20, 2017 12:34 pm
The threatening messages were written in block print, but not in ink. Each message had been embossed into thick paper. The scans provided had been dusted to provide legibility to the otherwise impenetrable writing:

THEY BARGAINED WITH DEATH FOR LIFE AND WILL GET NOTHING FOR THEIR TRADE BUT CORPSES

SHE'S NOT CRYING WHY ARE YOU

AN EYE FOR AN EYE IS NEVER ENOUGH.

And the final message, which was soaked in blood but still legible:

I SAW WITH MY OWN EYES MINERVA OF CUMAE HANGING IN A JAR, AND WHEN THE FETCHES SAID TO HER, MINERVA WHAT DO YOU WANT, SHE REPLIED, I WANT TO DIE

SO I LET JENNIFER DIE INSTEAD!!

HA

HA HA

Jennifer Wells was enrolled in a local equivalent of Big Brothers & Big Sisters. Minerva was her big sister.

They bargained with death for life.

The moment he read the words a shiver went down his spine. Whatever Jeremiah had been expected, it was not this. He had not expected to find familiar words that were known to him, that had been sent months ago before Ascencion Shore had been murdered as texts they had recently learned of. Notes were written down, the old fashioned way in a notebook (his private one at that, which would disappear back into the pocket space he had discovered).

His eyes scanned through the reports again, a hollow feeling in his gut.

shibrogane
type of paper and style/font used for the block print? were the threatening letters sent to a particular person? and who reported the disappearances of minerva and jennifer, as well as their last known location and any potential suspects. (coming back to ming in a bit, >__>;.)

PostPosted: Thu Apr 27, 2017 12:10 pm
The threatening letters were hand-delivered to Salem PD, as far as anyone could tell, and left in the lobby. Minerva and Jennifer were reported missing by two separate people: Jennifer's foster family reported her missing first. Then Minerva's half-brother, Jeremiah Mercer, reported her missing a day later. Their last known location was surmised from Minerva's phone, found broken in the Salem aqueduct.

There are no suspects. The case was cold basically upon inception. The thick paper that was used for the letters turned up no known maker or even a source for the pulp. The writing told the crime lab nothing.

Included in this email are higher resolution images of the thumb prints as well as a scan of the document itself. Not quite sure how someone managed to put together something like this but it seems to be rather elaborate.

Thanks again.

Jeremiah P. Mercer
Chief of Police

Jeremiah's time, when not dealing with other things, had been consumed with the reports of Jennifer, Ming, and Minerva. He had made a note to visit Aleksy (because if anyone knew about his sister, it would be him).

Part of him wondered if he should visit Jennifer's foster family, to look into that, but at the same time he did not want to dig up old wounds. It would only be painful for them and he had no memories of this world before November.

With both the writing and the paper used turning up nothing (though the print made his eyes hurt simply from the style of it), he moved to other details after looking to see if there was a cold case box that contained the the notes themselves. The fact that Minerva's tongue had been delivered with the last note was disturbing, something that tied back to the fact that Noeh no longer had one, and made him wonder as he read through.

Had they been able to tell if she was alive at the time it was cut from her?

The fact that she was not listed as dead where Jennifer and Ming were was also strange. It made him wonder if his other self had known something else was going on. Another look was briefly given to the information about Minerva's phone.

late for detective school
breakdown of what he's looking for from his post: was there any other relevant data from her phone they were able to pull up? were they able to determine that minerva was still alive when her tongue was cut from her? location of the cold case box containing the paper and other investigation notes if there is one?

not in the post: is the aqueduct mentioned frye's? were any of the missing three known to be magical?

Chief,

Sorry, nothing new's coming up. I'll keep an eye on it if you want, but I think I'm about tapped out.

Huh, actually, I've got a report from an urgent care doctor about someone coming into his practice with a bunch of cuts on their back that looked like this? Melany Dubhslaine... Isn't that the girl you were having it out with at the covered market?

Tell your friends to stop being so weird.

Cheers,
B. Au

Minerva's phone was too damaged. The call log from the cell provider was pretty boring, and had nothing outgoing beyond calls to her law school study group, her roommate, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentorship group.

She had been alive, according to forensics. It was mainly that there was no outside pressure to declare her deceased that kept her from being declared dead like her mentee. The case information and all related articles were stored in the archives of the Salem PD, and would likely not be accessible without going onto the public record.

B. Au -

Let me know if you do turn up anything, I'd appreciate it.

It is the girl I was seen at the market with. Do yourself a favor and simply call out to someone instead of waiting to make sure they're the person you think they are before doing so.

What was the name of the doctor that filed the report? Did the doctor report if she was brought in by someone or came in by herself? Actually, just forward me the report.

Also I'll see about telling them to stop being weird but I make no promises.

One more question: Did your system give the .tiff files of the thumbprints you sent back to me?

Jeremiah P. Mercer
Chief of Police

Having it out. Really. Jeremiah was at least glad he had brought it up himself with the department instead of it coming around another way. Still, the news about Melany was worrisome. If it coincided with the meeting they had at Court then this was even more proof that the Sigil was ultimately harming her and detrimental to even her physical health.

More than ever he was aggravated with the fact that he had stepped into the place of another person and did not have the memories. With one last look to see whether or not either Minerva or Jennifer were known to have magic, he moved on to Ming's casefile (and looked to see if he had been known as magical).

Notes jotted down again, he was reading over Ming's case file. The mention of the ash pit and his clothing found in it was disconcerting. The blood as well ... Had someone been trying some kind of blood magic ritual?

He scanned the report to look for the location of the ash pit as well as any notes about the crime scene.

late for detective school
breakdown of what he's looking for from his post: can i get verification that the 'salem aqueduct' mentioned is frye's or if it's another one? were any of them known to have magic? was there any notes about ming's disappearance being attached to something ritualistic? where was the ash pit located?

in the email, jeremiah is asking about the fact they all say 201776669 and then 01, 02, 03 so on for each image.

Chief,

Sure thing.

Yeah, uh, I don't really have that problem. I just get Amazon to deliver my groceries. Doctor on the file was a Dr. Nicholas E. Wellington. He does the night shift at an urgent care clinic once a week, it looks like. Seems he's actually a trauma specialist. The report says she came in with a guy named Horace Nokoni, got fifty-nine stitches, a tetanus booster, and an antibiotic. Said he hadn't hurt her, got a safe-blood-play talk, went home.

Nah, I named them myself. It's just the file number.

Cheers,
B. Au

Neither Minerva or Jennifer was on record as being magical, but that didn't necessarily mean anything. Ming had a tag on his missing-persons report that indicated he was being watched for magical talent. The aqueduct was the Salem-Beverly Waterway Canal, where it let out into the bay.

The ash pit was at a campsite in the forest. There had been no sign of anything ritualistic.

Thanks for the information. Not exactly sure what is going on with that many stitches, but at least they got a safe-blood-play talk.

I'll catch you in person to ask about that Amazon delivery system for groceries.

Jeremiah P. Mercer
Chief of Police

A note about the location in the forest, as well as if it was the Rider-Waite state forest was written down. Another note was written down about Ming being watched for magical talent (just who was watching him?). Jeremiah was looking them for any notes about what Ming had been doing before he went missing, if there was a connection somehow between him and the other two.

Who had noted that Ming was missing?
PostPosted: Thu May 11, 2017 6:20 pm
It was the Waite State Forest.

There are programs that observe such things in the better interest of the community.

Ming was an honor-roll student at Ashdown High School. He was friends with Jennifer; the two were rumored to have been dating. He had no other connection to Minerva. His parents had reported him missing when he didn't return home from school on the day of his disappearance.

Jeremiah looked to see if they had noted the trail that the campsite was on, if only because he was wondering if it was close to where Sunny's body had been found.

Given that Ming disappeared two years after Jennifer, he wondered if the teenager had spent his time looking for them. (Not that the case notes could really say anything about that.)

Another glance was given to both cases, looking for any personal notes made on them by the detectives working the case. It was not likely but sometimes personal observations were left in.
