    the areas.

These are the descriptions of the places the swan boat will be traveling through for your romantic Tunnel of Love ride.

      AREA ONE
Once you step into the swan boat you immediately realize that one) those are totally real feather and two) that somehow you have traveled down the water to what looks like a romantic garden area.

Soft music plays, you hear the laughter of couples, and there is a table and chairs with a pair sitting across from each other and leaning forward to press their foreheads together and whisper sweet nothings to one another. The scene plays out and the paused swan boat moves forward once more.

      AREA TWO
As you come around the bend clouds blow in, hiding the ground and water. Building tops are visible, the moon high in the sky (does it have a face? is it singing?) as a pair dances across the clouds without a care in the world, their eyes only on each other. They dance and eventually have a romantic moment on top of a giant elephant.

        It’s a little weird.

      AREA THREE
Leaving the pair of dancers behind, the sound of swords clashing and fighting fills the air. Not all the parts of the ride are apparently for the disgustingly romantic sort and instead, it’s a battle as two people fight back to back, prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the other safe and see them live through the day.

A large beast appears after they’ve knocked down their foes and, with a battle cry, they charge an face it together. The scene fades as the boat is once more pulled forward on its watery path.

      AREA FOUR
The lighting dims, the flicker of a fireplace the only thing that illuminates the area. There’s a couple sitting close to one another on a stuffed unicorn. The boat does not linger long in this area, instead only giving you a glimpse as things appear to be getting heated quite quickly.

      AREA FIVE
As the ride comes to the last area, the path of the boat becomes unclear- water is everywhere. There are small craggy rocks in the water, flowering vines hanging from above, and the drip of what sounds like a deep cave.

Yet that feeling ends as one by one, paper lanterns start floating by and then a few float down from above landing in the water and continuing down the path the boat came from. In the distance you think you see another boat and another pair but look away as you realize they’re just about to kiss.

    ambiance.

When you roll your 1D6, these are the environmental things that happen to add ambiance to your ride.

1 - a light drizzle falls from above (?!), the sound of thunder cracking drowning out conversation, and something moves among the area that you cannot quiet see.
2 - flower petals fall from above, showering you in a sweet smell that relaxes you (unless you’ve got an allergy and then it’s little bits of glitter).
3 - something stalks the area you are in, glowing eyes watching you. you cannot see it, not clearly and it makes your eyes water, but you hear the growls and swear you hear it whisper a name, your name.
4 - stepping forward from the scene (out of nowhere), the something that runs the ticket booth appears and hands over a romantic present (your choice of present to give to your partner or keep for yourself!)
5 - an eerie voice echoes through the ride. it sounds barely human and everything in the area seems to darken ominously.
6 - a slightly chill breeze blows through, making you want to press close to one another (or hug yourself).

    outcomes.

When your ride comes to end, either due to malfunction or because it's simply come to an end, this is what happens.

        a perfectly romantic ride.
tab If all goes well, the swan boat ride comes out the other side of the Tunnel of Love and it’s exactly where you started. There’s no one there now, the ticket booth saying CLOSED, but as you go by you notice that your phone buzzes. Somehow there’s photos of you on instagram on the ride and there’s several very nicely done, flattering pictures of you (and whomever you went with) looking super adorable (together).

        a perfectly malfunctioning ride.
tab If things do not go well and the ride malfunctions … The swan boat creaks and protests, the sounds of gears grinding as you hear rushing water. Looking over the side you realize that a whirlpool (what the hell?!) is forming right underneath the swan boat and there’s no way to get away from it, some force trapping you in the boat. The boat, along with you, are sucked down into the whirlpool …

Only to blink your eyes and realize you are outside once more. Standing in cold water of a small picturesque pond that was nearby. A overly done archway is above you (it’s supposed to be romantic) and flowers and vines hang down from above all over again. You hear the snap of a camera but see nothing. Yet as you step out of the pond, to dry off and make sure you’re not covered in flowers, you feel something in your pocket. You reach in and discover that there’s a photo-booth style set of pictures of you (and whomever you went with) that have been done up with that super kawaii phone app. There’s also a bag of candy hearts in your other pocket. For once they taste amazing.

Temperance leaned idly against the iron-wrought frence as she waited for Ashton. With her sling off, she'd gone the extra mile and tried to be girly - impeccable eyeliner (no lipstick, she wasn't very good at not chewing her lips), a short dress, thin leggings, hair down up in an intricate braid. This was quite possibly the most effort Temperance had put into things. She sighed, looking at her nails and wishing she could maintain a manicure.

It was a little chilly tonight, and she shivered. The neon lights from the Tunnel of Love bathed her face in odd pinks.

It was a little inconvenient, Ashton supposed, to have an ever-shifting gender identity and no real idea of what would make his skin itch and crawl and want him to curl up and hide on any given day. On some days, that was button-ups and flannels and sensible shoes; unfortunately for Temperance, maybe, today it was skirts and frills that made Ashton feel like he needed to shed his skin and salt his raw muscle and die right there.

Which was to say: Ashton was pretty as any gender, but today he was in forest-greens and dark greys, button-up and jeans, casually formal. Makeup, always makeup, because the application didn't matter anymore -- but just very subtle, today. A little concealer under his eyes, a little gloss on his teal-tipped nails, and it went a long way. It was just inconvenient, that it would be on a date with a girl who wasn't so much into men, but that was life. One of the very few things he couldn't control.

"Temperance," Ashton purred as he approached, flowing into a deep bow. "My pleasure."

Temperance looked up and it took her a second to recognize Ashton. she was used to the feminine-presenting version of him, but she couldn't say this form was bad. "Looking exceptionally sharp, Ashton." She smiled and straightened up, sliding her braid over one shoulder.

"Shall we enter the 'tunnel'? It looks like it could be interesting."

"I," Ashton shrugged, a little smile on his face, "felt I had to look up to the occasion, what can I say, really." He found the Tunnel charming -- a little quaint, perhaps, but charming -- and that showed. "To celebrate the returned use of your arm, if we're going to make it special?"

"I feel like myself again." She rolled her shoulder experimentally. Then she held out that hand to Ashton. "Your company is enough. Let's get a boat." Temperance felt oddly excited to see this stupid little tunnel of love ride. It had been such a long time since she'd done anything so insipid.

Soft music played around them as the boat drifted forward. Temperance had managed to scoot close enough to Ashton that she could easily lean on him. "I somehow expected more action." she whispered.

"I'm sure it'll come," Ashton said; or he would have said, if thunder hadn't boomed in the tunnel, the ghost of something whispering around the walls - he caught the glimpse of what might have been a tail, perhaps, but it disappeared behind the table (probably for the best, it didn't seem to have had a cohesive form, all jagged crackling edges pushing at his eyes like pinpricks of impossible design).

He winced, lips curling back, and the hint of a deep growl reverberated in his throat.

"What was that?" she said, half-rising and twisting around in the boat as it went around a bend. The motion caused the swan to rock slightly. Temperance reached out to place a hand on Ashton's shoulder to steady herself. But, no matter how she squinted, whatever it was had retreated.

Slowly, she resumed her seat, still hanging onto Ashton for fear of over-balancing. "I thought these tunnels were supposed to breed romantic feelings, not odd things..." She looked at the strange couple. "Or odd things. Have you ever had to taxidermy something so large?"

"Probably nothing," Ashton said, more reassuring than he actually felt. "Just a magic trick, right?" His shoulder was thin but solid under Temperance's hand, and he kept his balance as the boat rocked. "That sort of thing would take years of practice, really...I've been doing serious work for less than a year, so the most I'm really confident in is maybe -" he waggled his hand in the air, ambivalent - "a labrador, if it's in good condition, good health. But I'm ruining the mood."

The drizzle picked back up again and this time, with her hand on his shoulder, Temperance could feel the way Ashton stiffened - it was a deep huff of air from all the way down in his chest, but his fingers tensed very briefly, white-knuckled. (A spark of bright light -- trailing footprints? pawprints? six limbs wrapped around the elephant's trunk, so many bright eyes -- the thunder cracked and it rushed faster than the eye could see behind the elephant, out of sight, nothing to mark its passing.)

"Nonsense, this tunnel hasn't exactly been... romantic, has it? And I like hearing about your hobbies, anyway." To be frank, the tunnel had been kind of creepy and made Temperance want to get out and poke around in the shadows rather than cuddle up against Ashton. Terrible. She sighed.

A light rain began to fall (from where?) and she frowned. Suddenly Ashton tensed. "What is it?"

"Some romance," Ashton murmured sarcastically, as the world darkened around the boat -- and there was someone's voice or something's voice, beckoning, whispering, barely understandable -- come here come here -- "I thought I saw something...but at this point, I'm beginning to worry this is going to kill us. What a terrible way to end a date, really."

"I'm sorry," she leaned in close to speak into his ear. There had been fighting and thunder and it was altogether loud. "I thought this would be less, I don't know... deadly-feeling than it is. I'd rather not die, you know. So much left to do." Temperance sighed and moved back, watching as the area lightened again. The company was good, but the atmosphere was awful.

This section even featured a stuffed unicorn and two people on top. Two very friendly people. "Well, I didn't think we'd get a free show as well."

"So very much left to do," Ashton echoed; it was a little haunting, actually. He seemed distracted from Temperance for the moment, and like this it was so easy to see he had eyes almost like Zac, maybe: his pupils were black and normal, but his irises were pitch black at the edges, the black crowded out by stars and galaxies tinted a deep enough green his eyes had looked normal from any other distance.

He shook his head. Resorted his thoughts.

"Maybe they'd like us to give them a show," he said, a little cautious, and pressed closer to Temperance. "Conserve body heat, right? We've just got to get real close..." It was flirting, in some odd sort of way, probably.

She shivered a bit, the wind making goosebumps prickle up on her skin. Ashton scooted closer and she glanced at him, utterly thankful for any bit of body heat he radiated. Looking up at him, she saw the echoes of stars in his eyes and it was oddly comforting, like having her own personal galaxy to fall into. She smiled.

"I might think you're trying to make a move on me, Ashton."

"And if I was," Ashton smiled, mischievous, putting a gentle hand on her waist -- "what would my lovely date say to that? To hell with the atmosphere." It would have been a much more romantic moment than the rest, but the ride operator stepped forward, leaning over the boat, and pulled Ashton's arm aside to hand him a card.

He blinked, twice, in apparent disbelief.

"...I have no words."
