It was a text for some, a phone call for others, but no matter what, it was a call to Nobles of the Court from Jeremiah to discuss change. While some he had spoken to privately, this was a matter for all of them together. Without consensus, or something like that, it was meaningless. They would not be able to achieve anything, change anything, and that was a necessity at this point.

text reads
there are some things to discuss.
about court. meeting there at the end of the week.

There was a date and time left with the text, though Jeremiah would respond to any texts back with some information. Things would be at the Court and it would be a discussion about the state of the Court in the aftermath of the world shift. That there would also be other things discussed was a given as well but that was the main focus.

It was in the corner of the Court that Jeremiah and Algie that had become theirs. There were floor to ceiling bookshelves and great windows that let what seemed like constant sunlight in. Jeremiah was staring out of a window, not pacing as he wanted to be (so many things on his mind), and this place was still not entirely theirs in the same way that their home was.

A chaise lounge was there, immediately seen as the doors opened up, a table in front of it, and a number of chairs, all in the center of the open library. A long time ago there might have been multiple desks but not anymore. It was all open space, though along the edges where the shelves of books where potted plants and the like had been brought in.

Lady was there because she'd promised Julian she would try. Speaking of Julian, he was also there, though he didn't seem inconvenienced in any way, shape, or form. Actually he looked kind of just fine. Lady, however, looked pissed off, and promptly took over the chaise with her tithe in tow. Lace was nowhere to be seen.

As INVARIABLY HAPPENED whenever one entered the Court, Lady's shirt and skirt had been swiftly subsumed and spat out much, much fancier. Her skirt was cream-colored as her fawn-fur, and her shirt was drapey and made her look like she had tits. She was not wearing shoes, which everyone could see because her feet were on the chaise, taking up as much space as was humanly possible.

"You could've walked next door and invited me," she said, grumpily.

Alexis looked annoyed, really, but at this point it was par for the course with them -- they didn't like the Court all that much, in physical concept, and even if they'd started to develop a small fondness for the clothing it put them in they still couldn't be fond enough of it to, you know. Like it. Mostly because it changed their ankle monitor into a little silver bracelet, which threw off the weight of it (even though maybe it didn't at all and it was all in their head??), and then it changed back when they left and they had to deal with that again and the everpresent worry one of these days that was going to tell the police department they'd left like a false positive --

Lady spoke and Alexis startled from their position outside the door, almost jumping; the polished bones and seaglass tied into their hair clinked, and they took a deep breath and entered, their back almost straight enough to pass for proper.

They did not meet Jeremiah's eyes at all. Lady they gave an acknowledging nod but barely recognized, even from the ball, because they'd been a little tipsy (more than a little), but -- they knew -- Shiloh, Rabbit, Alois (Alois Alois Alois and their heart beat a hard rhythm in their chest), Thorne and Hux if any of their memories were right. They'd see who showed up and who was new; who had tithed, who hadn't, what excuses they could make.

(I want to change. Not the world. Just me. Make me better.)

Their hands clenched rhythmic, one-two, one-two.

Jeremiah's own attire invariably came out on the high fashion, a higher quality material, and looked like something off of fashion week. The asymmetrical cut of the jacket and vest was going to drive him batty but he ignored it (the deep purples and reds were nice, however).

"I could've but I also kept missing you by five seconds every time I came over. I did bring over some baked goods for you too, though I think Eve is banning me from bringing lemon curd over to save her wife," Jeremiah replied, eyeing the fact that Lady had taken the chaise lounge. Of course she would. At least her speaking finally got Alexis to move forward.

He had a great desire to pinch the bridge of his nose. Which he did, though he was pleased to see Julian (because he looked fine, though that was what he expected) but Alexis still skirting edges and their behavior still skittish made him want to-

Things were, of course, never easy.

There were drinks on the low table, though no orange juice, and all carefully arranged (by Fell, because she was like that).

It was okay that there wasn't orange juice on the table, as Julian had brought some himself. He was silently pouring some into a large champagne glass for Lady.

"Sit," said Lady, pointing at the end of the chaise. "You know the rules." The rules were INCREDIBLY COMPLICATED and amounted mostly to radical self-care (which is to say not very complicated). They involved doing stuff Julian was interested in and taking naps and being nice to himself.

She was being a good friend.

"They were very yummy," she acknowledged.

Lady slipped a green-eyed stare over to Alexis, long enough to evaluate them before accepting her orange juice from Julian. "So. Court." She said it like Spongebob saying tax exemption.

"I'm glad you enjoyed them." A small smile was given to Lady, Jeremiah's attention going to Julian once again and then moving towards the chairs.

It wasn't like he missed that tone. His fingers flicked towards one of the chairs, for Alexis to have a seat themselves instead of hanging at the edges.

"Yes, Court. We're going to talk about making changes - doing something better - but we're waiting a bit longer for others to arrive."

He had hoped to keep the existence of this gathering from his tithe, but that would have meant keeping it from Oroh as well, and Rabbit had been one step behind his fetch from the moment they had met. Between Temp's expectant glances and Oroh's far less subtle hounding, it had taken fewer than three days to wear him down. Rabbit hadn't wanted anyone to know that he was cooking a baby noble, but it seemed that now everyone would.

While he usually got away with plush sweaters and magical khakis in his own space, it appeared that a public meeting of the minds required more outlandish finery. Rabbit's was red and gold, sleeveless and expensive, and although he didn't look uncomfortable wearing it, he did seem anxious in general, rubbing at the rectangular block of a tattoo on the inside of his right wrist with his opposite thumb. It had once been a void of dark ink, but it had faded over the past six months, almost as if it was being slowly scrubbed away.

"Where do you want to sit?" he whispered once they'd arrived, drawing his spine straighter so he wouldn't have to look quite so high to meet Temperance's eyes.

"Oh- People are here.." Algie appeared from a side doorway with a stack of books and Adze behind him, also laden with a stack. The butler looking fetch said nothing, though he looked rather adoringly at the entire gathering because so many nobles in one place was just amazing to him.

The professor, in the court, took the reality of Bespoke Country Academic to an entirely new level. He wasn't in anything nearly so flashy as the ball but it put his usual tweed to shame. He moved to the shelves nearest him and handed his stack over to Adze so the fetch could get to work organizing and shelving them.

It seemed that even here he couldn't avoid being a bibliophile.

He was of course coming into a conversation that had already started so there was a loose wave to the room as he drifted for a drink and then nearer his husband.

Alexis caught Jeremiah's implication for them to sit but set their shoulders in indignation instead, not sitting, even while they moved further into the room - soundless. (They slanted a tiny little smile at Rabbit when he arrived but drew back from Temperance, eyes wide for the second before they caught themselves- their body language said uncomfortable, uncomfortable, uncomfortable, guilty guilty guilty - and they moved to make sure she was on their left, faded a little out of view.) Algernon didn't get much of an acknowledgement.

They rocked back and forth on the balls of their feet, not saying a word, eyes flickering around to see who else would arrive before Jeremiah decided it was enough.

Well, Shiloh Beaumont was never the punctual type.

He meant to get there on time, but finding his way into the Otherworld and then getting caught up with Beel got in the way. Now he was wandering the halls with the aforementioned fetch in tow, though he wasn't sure how much he wanted Beel to be present for what would be discussed. Beel had been adamant, though.

He walked into the domain silently, his presence an absolute absence of light as the vantablack of his outfit swallowed everything around him, save for the stark white of his gloves and the waves of wisteria that dripped off of him like water. In fact he was swallowed in purple; lavender, nightshade, pretty things. Beel next to him was a contrast as he was drowning in fungi, the side of his head covered up in those long flat disc-like ones you'd see on the side of trees.

They assessed the group. Lady and Rabbit and of course the Mercer's. Alexis was there too, the same as he remembered, and then there were... well, Julian he had been expecting. Temperance sunk in his stomach like a dead weight, memories of Melany flooding back to the surface of his forethought. She could be dead. He wouldn't have to deal with the confusion situation he was in now, where she seemed human and nothing seemed wrong.

Was he really the only one that hadn't taken a tithe of the original Nobles? The thought slighted him.

"Um." He started up awkwardly, feeling immensely out of place around all the people that were older than he was (he edged towards Lady subconsciously because of this fact, but not before throwing a wave to Alexis should they see it) "Hey. Sorry to be late." Beel was blessedly silent next to him, more out of reverence for the sheer number of nobles in the room rather than respect for his patron. Probably.

"Good luck," said Lady, who still wasn't totally sold on the Court idea at all.

She tucked her legs up under her, making room for Shiloh on the chaise. She patted the opened spot, giving Shiloh a significant look. Get over here, she said with a significant waggle of her eyebrows. People who suffered under Melany had to stick together. "Can we all sit down instead of looking awkwardly at each other? Life is so short, and we are all standing like douchebags," except Lady, who was sitting.

Jeremiah's lips twitched, an amused glanced towards Lady. "As she said, have a seat." The space was malleable and, with a snap of his fingers, there were extra chairs for those that were not expected. While Algie grabbed a drink, Jeremiah did not, but he did beckon for the two of them to claim the two chairs that were theirs.

Fell appeared from the same side doorway, joining Adze a moment later with an indifferent glance to the Nobles gathered. Mostly because she had the list from Algie about how to reorganize the books and it was, of course, a massive undertaking.

Alexis was given a stare from Jeremiah this time, though his gaze slid to Rabbit and Temperance quickly enough. That answered some questions, though others sprung up. It niggled at his mind, however, with everything that was going on ...

"Grab a drink if you don't have one. If you want something specific, it can be gotten." His fingers wiggled a bit as if to illustrate magic. He continued on a moment later. "I called everyone together because we're going to do something about the Court and what it's become."

"Is that even possible..." Beel murmured to Shiloh, his eyeless socket set on Jeremiah's figure. Shiloh shrugged before taking a hasty seat next to Lady. He let out a sigh he hadn't realized he was holding in.

"It sounds good in theory." He was speaking to Beel, but Lady and Julian were both in obvious ear shot (as well as any other Noble that felt so inclined to listen in), "But it seems dangerous too." He had been all for the idea—still was—but was definitely more cautious now that he had time to mull it over.

He especially didn't like the idea of there being any one leader. Outside of court was a different story, but inside of Court he regarded everyone differently. Jeremiah was taken with caution.

But that was enough of that. Beel stood next to him and lapsed into silence as Shiloh turned his attention to Lady again, looking between her and Julian (which was hard to tell because of the thick laced veil over his eyes, but regardless). I thought you said you'd never take a tithe, he wanted to say, but he kept it to himself for the moment. At least people seemed aware of it; it wasn't some big secret like it had apparently been with the others.

Temperance felt severely under-dressed. Every noble was so fancy and here she was in a mostly regular skirt and shirt. Well, she'd insisted on attending, so she'd take whatever she got. Rabbit had not even intended to tell her of the meeting, but Oroh had let it slip and Temperance had pulled out her rarely used puppy dog eyes until he'd relented. She was (eventually) going to be a noble, so noble business was almost hers.

"We can sit wherever you wish. You're the boss, Rabbit," she whispered back. Temperance felt horribly uncomfortable. In the light of everything, she might have neglected to remember that everyone probably still hated her over the Melany thing. She looked at Jeremiah - it seemed as though the erstwhile couple were some sort of appointed leaders. Swallowing a sigh, she sat. Frankly, she didn't know anything about the court changes, so she kept her peace for now.
