Okay, wrong place and time to bring this up, but does anyone think it's becoming a bit...much?

I don't know, it seems like everytime I bring up Shoujo-ai, no matter where I am, everyone's all: "Ewww, gross....lesbians~"

Though, if anything, I'm tired of movies using "lesbians" (if you could even call them that) as a more sexual "guy-thing". =P

First, I want to say that I am really sick of the stereotyped gay person being thrown into popular culture today. It's kind of demeaning when there isn't any purpose but to say "Hey, look, a gay person, we're edgy/open minded/accepting/wanting your money badly."

But I don't think it can get too popular. Saying it's getting too popular is just being elitist. If someone enjoys it, more power to them, and if a lot of people enjoy it, that means there's going to be more money flowing into the industry and more product for us to enjoy.

I think that a lot of people are climbing on board the yaoi train because it's popular, but they aren't exactly opening their hearts and minds as it were. You would think that one would come into yaoi with an open mind and accept things like shoujo ai more easily. If anything, I've noticed the exact opposite, some people in yaoi are really close minded! They don't like real boys. They think lesbians are icky. They think het is the devil. They think that anyone who doesn't like yaoi is stupid or evil and is after them. It's ridiculous really! I find it highly ironic that we're getting such an influx of people with their heads stuck up there bums!

So, I agree, though I wouldn't exactly say that it's yaoi that's becoming a bit much. It's the people coming in that are just too much!

As a female I must say I love yaoi, but I also love het.

Yaoi is becoming too much, but it'll never stop being so.

I love Yaoi, but I love Yuri alot more ^^;; I'm not very big on hetero, but I read just about any kind of manga. I really like Saikano, and that's a pretty damn straight manga xD

I've also noticed that some Yaoi-fangirls WON'T read a manga that is straight. Sure, I understand personal taste and all that other stuff, but there ARE really good titles out there; Yaoi or not.

Once again:

Elitists.

Yaoi doesn't make you a good person, and you don't have to be a good person to enjoy it. It's a genre. Saying that they aren't the right type of fan or they aren't what you would expect is like all those teenyboppers who get mad when their favorite band hits it big because they aren't in a special club anymore. Yaoi is bound to attract fans of all types, and they're welcome to like or dislike whatever they want.

I personally don't like het and I don't like shoujo ai much either, despite being a lesbian. Does this mean I am a bad fan or a bad person? Does it mean I am close-minded? No, it means I have personal preferences.

Yes! It makes you a terrible terrible person! What's wrong with you? Liking only what you like! That's just wrong!!!! sweatdrop

No, in all seriousness, there's nothing wrong with liking what you like. It's when people start striking out at things that other people like that there's an issue. My main point really was that these supposedly open minded yaoi fans are really just as close minded as the next person. It's perfectly ok to not like things, it's when you start mocking other people's preferences that it gets a bit much.

I don't think it's about elitism. I think it's about attitude. A lot of yaoi fans act like there is nothing better and woe to those who disagree. I think that the greatest anime ever created was Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'm sure not everyone here agrees with me, but the difference is that I don't freak out and tell people that they're ignorant and wrong for disagreeing with me. To each their own right?

That's the crux of matter. Attitude and lack of respect. A lot of yaoi fangirls treat het, shoujo ai, and even non-anime slash like it's gross and horrible for existing. Considering we are in a fandom that carries a belief that is despised by a huge portion of the world, you'd think yaoi fangirls wouldn't act in the same intolerant, oppressive manner. So, for example, if they were respectuful, in a thread talking about slash in Western TV shows, you wouldn't find someone posting something like "real boys are icky" just like you won't find me in a Gravitation thread going "Gravi sux".

I don't understand how people can be so closed minded normally, but when they're supposedly into something that requires an open mind, it makes no sense at all. If you like yaoi, shouldn't you be able to accept, if not like, yuri and shoujo-ai? I don't understand people.

I like Yaoi and Yuri, I accept people who in real life are gay/lesbians. I am bi myself.

I try to be opened minded about other things as well. As someone who has been made fun of her whole life, even though it did a lot of negative things to me some I am still recovering from, one good thing I think it did is it helped me be a more tolerant person. Wouldn't it be so hypocrtical fro me to make fun or critice things in the same way that I was made fun of and criticized all my life?

I know for sure I liked Yaoi first, but I know I didn't fpr a second turn away the other side of the coin, yuri.

Okay, you are saying you think yaoi is a bit much ON A YAOI BOARD! Go complain on the Yuri board where people will listen to you -.-. Yaoi will never be too much for me. Or probably any one else. All I get sick of is fangirls thinking they can marry two of the guys and yet like them gay and then go all "squee fangirlgasmish!" I hate that, that is about it. I liked Yuri for a little bit. It got so boring so fast.

I think you completely missed the point on that one. The basic gist of it is "How can people be all over yaoi and still sit there and completely reject yuri?" in other words "How can yaoi fans be so damn close minded?" This being a yaoi board, it's the perfect place to ask yaoi fans about the outlook of other yaoi fans.
