"Who are you? You're here with your friends? Me too! Where are they? I don't know. Wait, don't I know you? What's happening!?"

☈I don't like walking around this old and empty house.
⇝So hold my hand, I'll walk with you, my dear.
⇝The stairs creak as you sleep, it's keeping me awake.
⇝It's the house telling you to close your eyes.

Jonah stepped outside of his house. The air was crisp, and the ground was littered with leaves of gold, brown, tan and green. The kind of leaves that made the satisfying little crunch when you stepped on one. He did. Smiling to himself at the small pleasure, he continued on to the end of his driveway. He was waiting for his friends to arrive to pick him up. Terry had had this "excellent" idea to go spend the night in a "real" haunted house to get into the Halloween Spirit this year. Everyone had agreed to it. Jonah had only decided to come along because of incessant begging of his best friend.

It was still just the beginning of October, but to Terry, Halloween lasted the whole month. The guy was crazy for it. Jonah, being the best friend, was required to support the adventures that Terry wanted to go on. So here he sat, waiting on the curb until the beat-up red Toyota pulled up to him. He sighed, stood, and climbed into the passenger seat, which was always specially reserved for him when Terry drove anywhere. Then, they were off.

The drive took about forty-five minutes, and everyone was starting to complain, until they saw what was at the end of it. A big, padlocked metal gate loomed over the road, which was now more of a gravel path than an actual street. Up the path, beyond the gate, nestled in the trees was a big white house. The style you might see on an old southern plantation. Everybody went silent. "Having second thoughts, bro?" Jonah asked Terry, who was wide-eyed with fascination. His friend snapped back to attention and shook his head vigorously. "Last one in gets to sleep alone!" Terry shouted, before taking off through a rusted off part of the fencing. The others hurried after him, not wanting to be left behind.

Up close, the house was even more menacing than it had been from further away. They could now see every detail of the white wood, stained and rotting with age. There was a swinging chair on the porch that swayed slightly in the Autumn breeze. Jonah shivered. "Remind me why I let you talk me into this, again?" He complained to Terry. Terry did not respond. He was already trying to open the front door. It was jammed, but after a minute of prying, it creaked open. They went inside.

The house was still decorated as though someone was currently living in it, however every object was covered in a thick layer of dust and cobweb. Jonah wandered into the front parlor. A small statue sat in the far corner, and he went to admire it. The detailing was so intricate that he might have thought it was real, if it wasn't made entirely of grey stone. Jonah turned and went back to the entrance, but he could not see his friends anymore. "Guys?" He called, checking around the few downstairs corners. "Terry?" He asked again, still without a response. He went back to the front door and looked outside. His friends could not be found. <******** bastards..." He mumbled under his breath, before sitting himself down on the stairs of the porch to see if they returned from either direction.

Lightning sighed as she sat in the passenger seat of her best friend, Emily's, new but somehow already dirty mercedes. Her beats were planted firmly on her head to tune out the noise of the other members of what Emily liked to call, 'The Dream Team.' She loved her friends to bits, she really did; just sometimes...they can be a bit...annoying. Her fingers tapped rhythmically against her Iphone as she replied in an online chat forum. Emily would always scold her for being on the internet too much. She said that Lightning was pretty and friends with her so there was no need to talk to weirdos on the internet. Lightning mostly shrugged off her comments.

"We're almost there!" Emily chirped in excitement as they neared the supposedly "haunted" house. The three girls in the back squealed as well as they stared out their windows at the nearing building. Lightning was unamused by this trip. She didn't care for this. Whether ghosts existed or not was none of her concern. But somehow, some way, Emily convinced Lightning to come. She wanted to mentally slap herself for getting into this stupid scare fest. There was no way that ghosts were real. Sure, Lightning liked them and was interested in them, but scientifically the dead can not be walking around on earth in a rotting abandoned house. When people die, that's it. They are gone. See ya!

Emily squealed once more as she parked the car and hopped out of the driver's seat faster than Lightning could remove her headphones. The other girls also scrambled out the car, wide eyed and bushy tailed as they stared at the large decaying wooden house. "I'll admit, it's way scarier up close!" Emily called out to Lightning, who was still making her way out of the vehicle. The raven locked girl stared at the house that she was being forced to go into. "Just looks like an ordinary abandoned house to me." she bluntly stated as she made her way over to her friends. Emily had a wide grin on her face as she and the other girls, who seemed to be twenty percent more scared than they were before, raced inside. Lightning, on the other hand, took her sweet time about getting in.

Once inside, Lightning took a look around. A smirk appeared on her face as she snapped a picture with her phone to put on her tumblr. "Aesthetic." she mumbled to herself. Slowly, but surely, Lightning made her way around the house. She snapped pictures here and there, but ultimately, she got bored after about ten minutes of exploring. "Alright 'Dream Team,' can we go now? I can't post these pictures without service!" Lightning called out, but she got no answer in return. "Uh, excuse me! Are you gonna answer me!?" and still no answer from any of her friends. Lightning let out a groan as she decided to go wait for them outside.

Taking a look out of a broken window, she saw another car, that was pretty beat up, parked outside the house as well. She wasn't surprised. News gets out there's a "haunted house," a whole bunch of teenagers will want to come here. Inspecting the outside from her window to see if she could spot one of the girls, she saw a boy sitting on the steps of the porch. "Who's he?" Lighting muttered under her breath as she made her way to his location. She tapped him on the shoulder and cleared her throat before asking, "So, are you the ghost everyone's talking about?"

Jonah didn't hear the footsteps behind him and so, needless to say, with all the hype going on around this place, he jumped about a foot when he felt a tap on his shoulder from behind. He was too startled to register that the voice that spoke had belonged to a girl. "Goddammit, Terry! What the-" He began, launching to his feet and turning, ready to throw a punch at the sweet-looking girl who was actually the culprit. Jonah dropped his fist mid-throw. "...hell..." He trailed off, all of the anger he was about to bash his best friend with now dissipating. "Where did you come from?"

Jonah was completely dumbfounded. He had been sitting on the front porch since he and his friends had arrived, and hadn't noticed anyone approach the house. He hadn't even seen the other car drive up. Had she come in from the back and he just hadn't heard her inside? It was possible, with how quickly his own group had disappeared without his knowledge.

Jonah shook his head. Even if there were no ghosts, this house was definitely the weirdest place he had ever been. It was like the whole area was soundproof, or something. He looked back up the path. Terry's red Toyota could still be seen through the bushes beyond the gate. They had to still be here somewhere, right? They were probably all hiding in the house, biding their time before they jumped out to scare him. Or try to make him think the house actually had a ghost. It would be their revenge for all of his complaints about not wanting to come along. He was not looking forward to that moment.

Jonah focused on the girl in front of him again. She looked to be the same age as him, with raven black hair, doll-like bangs, and big eyes. In fact, the more he looked at her... Had he seen her somewhere before? He wasn't sure. Shaking off the feeling, he stretched his arms out before leaning against the rotting pillar that framed the left side of the stairs, trying to appear more relaxed than he felt after that mini-heart attack. Maybe the girl would be able to explain how she appeared behind him without his knowledge.

Lightning took a step back as she was about to dodge the unnecessary punch the boy was about to throw. "Sorry, I'm not your friend terry." Lightning joked with the boy as she leaned against one of the walls of the decaying house. "Why, I came from a portal inside that took me to Wonderland!" the female sarcastically spouted as she looked at her phone; no signal. Lightning gave the boy a sideways glance before saying, "Where did you think I came from? I came from inside the house, duh!"

The raven haired girl stared at the boy for a moment, trying to trigger her memory as to where she saw him before. To be honest, it was hard for her to remember since all the boys in her school had the same basic jockey look. It was obvious that he would be considered a popular kid. Unlike Lightning, who was labeled as the school's biggest goth. Even though she wasn't really goth at all. She was just different. People judged Emily all the time for hanging out with her despite Lightning's good looks. Their styles were just too different, but that didn't seem to change Emily's mind. But the school labeled her as the "Silent Princess" due to the fact that no one in school has ever heard her voice before and she was beautiful and graceful like a princess.

Lightning put her phone in her pocket as she stared at the empty mercedes parked outside the house. Where the hell could her friends have gone? What were they plotting? Were they going to pretend to be the ghost that supposedly haunted this mansion and try to scare her? If that was their intention then it was stupid and not going to work. Nothing really scared Lightning, she had the fearlessness of a highly trained soldier. The girl messed with her bangs as she spoke up, "Your friends ditch you too?" It was unlikely, though not impossible, that this boy came here alone. And the fact that he mentioned someone named Terry earlier, made it more certain that he came here with at least one other person.

She mentally chuckled as she watched the teen try to retain his cool, calm persona after the sudden outburst he had towards her. Was this kid easily scared? What was he doing in a place like this then? She decided to stop asking herself the questions and waited for the boy to explain himself. There was no point in thinking these questions if she couldn't get an answer from asking her.

Jonah rolled his eyes at the girl's sarcastic comments. "Well, obviously. You scared the bejeezus out of me. Thing is, I've been here a while now, and I didn't hear or see anyone else come in." He explained to her, trying to get her to see whatever the "weird part" of this whole scenario was. He wasn't even quite sure himself. Although the girl herself seemed like she might easily sneak up on him, he was sure she wouldn't have come here alone, and when she asked about his friends, that confirmed it. How did he miss an entire group of giggling, squealing girls coming it? The same way he had missed his own loud group of friends disappearing, he supposed.

Jonah nodded. "I can't find them anywhere. They're probably hiding out waiting for the right time to get back at me. Terry practically had to get on his hands and knees to get me to come to this stupid thing." He added, shaking his head and giving another eye roll to accompany the explanation of Terry's begging. "Then they just ditch. Hell, maybe our friends have found each other by now and are plotting against the both of us." He muttered, still trying to come up with some reasonable explanation as to how two large-ish groups of teenagers just up and vanished right under their noses.

Jonah didn't consider himself much of a "scaredy cat", he could handle a good horror movie. Even make it through a haunted house just fine. Years of Halloween events with Terry had made him more or less immune to them. However, he had to admit that this place had a certain quality that creeped him out quite a bit. He knew it was probably just the atmosphere of the place; The rotting wood and dusty rooms, and the fact that almost all of the furniture still decorated the place as though whoever had lived there had just disappeared like their friends, without anyone noticing. It was no wonder everyone told stories about this house.

As he waited for her response, Jonah continued to try and place the girl in his mind. She had to be from his school. He wracked his brain trying to place her in some kind of clique. Then he realized what the issue was. Jonah had been trying to place her with all of the emo/goth/punk kids. She wasn't one of them at all. Now that he had figured that out, the girl seemed to fall right into place. "Oh!" He exclaimed suddenly. "Aren't you Emily's friend?" He asked, remembering seeing the two walking the halls together on more than one occasion.

His group wasn't super close to Emily, by any means, but they talked to her often enough to know who she was. Jonah vaguely remembered Terry having a crush on her once in the 8th grade. He remembered Terry sitting at his kitchen table writing and rewriting a note to Emily asking her to "be his date" to one of the class skating rink parties. The whole thing had consumed Terry-as most of his crushes did- for a good two weeks, before he decided to move on to another girl in their class named Kimberly. And then Hannah. And then Victoria. There was a whole string Jonah could list off.

Lightning raised her eyebrows as he explained his side of the story. "Uh huh," she mumbled as she took a pack of cigarettes out of her pocket, along with a black lighter painted with white letters that read, "I'm dead. Wanna hook up?" Quoted from one of her favorite shows, American Horror Story. The cigarette took its place in between her pink lips and she ignited the end. She had to admit, it was weird that he was sitting out here the whole time and she never noticed him or the car or his friends. And where did her friends go as well? Ugh, there's too much happening at once.

Her doll eyes darted towards the boy as he continued to speak while she smoked. "I highly doubt that. Emily doesn't usually like to hang around groups of boys without me. Her snarky attitude somehow has guys chasing after her and she hates it." Lightning explained as she took another inhale of lung cancer. And besides, how could two large groups of teenagers just disappear unnoticed? That's just ridiculous. Lightning coughed a bit but immediately took another inhale.

This place was honestly stupid in her mind. There was no point in even being here. The house was not haunted and it was a waste of her time. She could be home right now, watching How I Met Your Mother and blogging on tumblr. She exhaled loudly as a large puff of white smoke escaped her mouth. She had to remind her to slap Emily later when this was all over and done with.

Lightning was taken aback as the boy suddenly let out a loud "oh." Her attention turned back towards him as he asked if she was Emily's friend. "Yup, that's me. Emily's living accessory," she tapped her cigarette with her index finger to remove excess ash before continuing her sentence, "I'm surprised you didn't recognize me as the Silent Princess. That's what everyone at school calls me." To be honest, no one in school was smart enough to come up with a name like that. Emily was the one who started that and it just went around the school. Soon even the teachers and faculty started calling her that. She didn't mind it, she thought it suited her.

Emily knew everyone at school. Even if she wasn't close to all of them, she at least knew their names and was always thoughtful enough to say hi to them. Lightning, on the other hand, was silent and knew Emily and the Dream Team. They tried to introduce her to boys and other females at parties and school events, but it never worked out. Ever since 8th grade had Lightning stopped trying to be everyone's friend. Before Emily, she only ever had one close friend who was also her first and last kiss. His name was Eli and he moved to Germany with his dad. He never saw Lightning again. Tragic, huh?

Jonah crinkled his nose up at the cigarette smell. "American Horror Story, huh? I bet you were just itching to spend some time in this fabulous place." He said, referring to her lighter quote. "Maybe you'll find your very own ghost boyfriend." He wiggled his eyebrows at her as in a suggestive fashion, trying to be funny.

Then Jonah shrugged. "Sorry, the only girls I really know at school are the ones Terry talks to. I don't really pay too much attention..." He admitted. It wasn't that he didn't like girls, because he did. It was just... He and Terry had two very different styles of interest, as far as girls went. Jonah just knew a few names, but otherwise didn't care too much about making sure he remembered every girl at school and what their nicknames were and what cliques they went with. "Terry probably would have known it, but, well... I'm a little spacey."

Jonah was a little out of place as far as the jocks went. He hung out with the jocks, played sports with the jocks, but he got far better grades, and didn't really act like the rest of them. They all had this brutish attitude that Jonah didn't find very appealing. Even Terry had it, to some degree. Most of them studied the school food chain more than they studied for their own exams, and could tell you everything about everyone that passed you by. Jonah, on the other hand, didn't really care about who was "cool" and who wasn't.

Through their chatting, there was a sound from inside the house like something had fallen. Jonah leaned to peek in the door. "Guys?" He asked at the house, thinking maybe someone from one of the two groups had finally come to retrieve them.

Lightning rolled her eyes at his stupid jokes. Whoever wanted to spend time in this place was an idiot. "I don't have time to be here. I could have done much more with my life than this." she groaned as she dropped the cigarette on the porch and stomped on it with her foot. Besides, it'd be a pretty big miracle for Lightning to get a boyfriend. She was pretty sure, but her personality usually didn't meet most guy's standards.

The girl scoffed at his sentence. As if she needed more people to pay attention to her. She already stood out enough. "Why would I care if you knew who I was or not? Doesn't make a difference to me." her shoulders rose and fell in a little shrug. Both her hands rested behind her back as she kind of rocked back and forth while she leaned against the wall. She didn't pay attention to the guys at school. In fact, Lightning didn't remember the name of one boy she has ever met. She didn't have time to deal with idiot jocks saying stupid pick up lines and rating girls on how nice their chests were. The guy she would date would have to have good grades. She would not negotiate.

Lightning didn't fit in with anyone at school. There was no clique she really belonged in. She didn't conform to school society as much as Emily did. Emily was the kind of girl that everyone admired. Girls wanted to be her, boys wanted to date her. A teacher's favorite student. Homecoming queen, soon to be prom queen. At one point, Lightning really envied Emily. Saying she wished she could be more like her. But that wish died and now Lightning was her own person. She even convinced her parents to legally change her name to Lightning. Only her family and Emily knew her real name.

Hearing the noise as well, Lightning peaked in through the broken window, but failed to see anyone. "It was probably just a rat or something." she suggested, trying to look harder. She really didn't see anyone, and knowing Emily, if she found Lightning, she'd run over, hug her then punch her in the shoulder for making her worry. It was a common scenario for the too.

Jonah nodded in agreement, still looking into the house for any sign of movement. "You and me both. I was conned into coming by my best friend's begging." He complained, shaking his head. And now I'm here, with this girl from school, no friends, and no car keys. He thought to himself in frustration. He pulled out his out-of-date phone as a last minute thought, just to cover his bases. No service either.

He stepped back into the house. "Do you think we should try to find everybody? I don't know where two groups of teenagers could possibly be hiding, but it is a pretty big house... And old. Maybe they found some kind of secret hideout or something..." Jonah trailed off, walking to the area the sound had come from just to see if he noticed anything. As far as he could tell, nothing seemed out of place. He thought that if something was, it would be pretty obvious, given all the dust cover.

Jonah crossed to the stairwell. Lining the wall up to the second floor were old black and white photos. He studied the one closest to the bottom for a moment, and the people in it seemed to study him right back. "Creepy." He muttered. "How old do you suppose these are?" He turned back to the girl to see if she had followed.

Then Jonah realized, he didn't even know what this girl's name was. He knew "Emily's friend" and, apparently, "Silent Princess", but that was it. "Wait, so uh... What's your name, again?" He asked. He wasn't trying to sound rude, but there really was not a good way to ask someone you went to school with- probably for years- what their name happened to be. But, he figured, if he was stuck here with her, he might as well find out.

Lightning shoved her very up to date phone (her family was quite wealthy and only wanted the latest of technology) in her pocket, still connected to her headphones which was very lowly, playing Greyhound by Swedish House Mafia. Great. Stuck here with some random guy from my school, no ride home and no Emily. Nice way to spend a Friday. Lightning pinched the bridge of her nose in irritation and sighed loudly.

Her grey hues looked up at the kid as he started walking back into the house. She hesitantly followed him back inside, taking another good look at the gothic interior of the house. She smiled to herself as she mumbled again, "Aesthetic.' She looked at the patterns on the dusty furniture and at the breaking statues littered around. Whoever designed this house definitely had a good sense of interior decorating.

Her feet carried her to the boy's next location, the second floor. I think the photos are cool," she said as she stared at one of two twin girls holding hands; although they didn't smile. She continued down the line of the photos before saying, "Well, colored photographs weren't official until 1861 when physicist James Clerk Maxwell used what is known to be the 'color separation' method," a small smile appeared on her face as she looked at the photographs of the whole family before she continued, "So I'd have to say early to mid 1800's. But then again, you never know if they just wanted to use black and white film."

Lightning realized when he had asked, she didn't know his name either. But she knew his best friend's name! Kinda...it definitely started with a T. "Oh, my name is Lightning. Lightning Woods. You?" she asked as she slowly approached him, her slender pale hand sticking out for a handshake.

Jonah grinned at her when she pulled out the mini history lesson on him. She was smart. "I think this house is too old to be anything more recent. But I guess you're right. I'm probably just getting to into the atmosphere of this place." Although if it was really from the 1800's, that would explain where all of the stories had stemmed from.

Then he cocked his head to the side as he took her hand to shake it. It was very small in his, and very white against his tanned skin. He held on probably just a moment longer than he should have thinking about the differences. "Lightning, huh? That's pretty cool." He said, with a tone of slight fascination. This girl was really nothing like any of the girls he was ever stuck hanging out with. "I'm Jonah Crawford."

Jonah supposed that if he had to be stuck in a creepy old house with someone, at least she was interesting and not a squeaky little cheer leader who was acting more afraid than she actually was. Those were always the kinds of girls he ended up stuck with in Terry's horror movie parties and Haunted House outings for Halloween. His friends might like taking care of those kinds of girls, but honestly Jonah thought it was pretty annoying.

There was no way any real person could actually be afraid of those big fuzzy spiders that popped up off the ground when you stepped on their floor-triggers. Or when you could obviously see the killer in the movie sneaking up behind his victim, or when the werewolf looked like a big guy in a suit. Jonah had to admit it was refreshing to be stuck with such a level headed girl in a situation like this for once.

"I have to agree with you there. This place sure has a cool atmosphere to it. I like it." Lightning admitted with a smile on her face. She wasn't emotionless or depressed. In fact, there was nothing wrong with her at all. She just preferred to be alone most of the time and hated talking to idiots. She was honestly a cool person once you got to know her. Lightning firmly shook his hand, but he held onto to it a little too long for her comfort.

Lightning nodded her head. "Yep, Lightning. Nice to meet you Jonah Crawford." she gave him a simple smile. He was definitely different from the other guys Lightning had to meet. At least he wasn't trying to hit on her and kept his distant from invading her personal space. She hated guys who made her feel uncomfortable, it made her want to punch them in the face. At least the person she would be stuck here with for god knows how long was okay...so far at least.

"Come on let's keep exploring." Lightning told him as she gestured him to follow her. She grinned as she took the lead. Lightning held her hands behind her back as she made her way down the hall until she picked a door. It had a sign on it with names on it, but it was faded and scratched out. She slowly turned the knob and opened it to what seemed like a children's room. "I bet this belonged to those twin girls in that picture." Lightning chirped as she looked around. It was extremely dusty and everything seemed to be sort of molding, but she make out the stuffed animals and there were two beds in place. The room seemed like the perfect colors for young girls even though now they were faded and dirty.

Her head swiveled around to look at Jonah behind her. "I wonder what the family was like. It seemed that they were passing this house down for generations. That would be pretty sensible since it was common back in the 1800's for large families to continue passing down the family home." she explained inspecting the room some more. Her head filled with questions about what happened to the family, if there were people now from this family, why they never tore it down to make apartments or something. Maybe there was a library with records and newspaper articles about this house. The whole exploring made her mostly forget that the main goal was to find their friends and get out of here.

☈I don't like walking around this old and empty house.
⇝So hold my hand, I'll walk with you, my dear.
⇝The stairs creak as you sleep, it's keeping me awake.
⇝It's the house telling you to close your eyes.

"Yeah, as much I was not into the whole stupid 'spending the night in a haunted house' idea, I have to admit the house itself is pretty sweet." Jonah agreed, following Lightning down the upstairs hall to a random door that appeared to once have had names scrawled into it. He nodded, following her inside the room. The twins had been pretty creepy, too, Jonah thought. Then again, kids seemed to make everything creepier than it already was.

"Yeah, I mean, the whole place is still completely furnished like it was meant to be lived in, but nobody has taken care of it. Do you think the owners are still around? It's like they just disappeared one day and no one noticed..." Jonah voiced his thoughts, leaving out how eerily similar the scenario would be to their entire groups of friends just up and disappearing without a trace. He shook off the hair-raising chill that came over him at the idea that there could be such a weird coincidence...

Now that they were inspecting the place a little further, though, it was actually pretty interesting. There must be a whole story behind the people who were here, and why it was so run down. Where everyone had gone. Jonah walked over to the wardrobe and pulled the doors open, the weird feeling from before now gone, replaced once again by the task at hand: checking the hiding spaces for their missing friends. Terry was not inside, nor were any of the others, but there were still young girls' dresses hanging from the rack. They really seemed to have just up and left.

As he pushed through the wardrobe, a small tinkling sound came from a small night table next to him. Jonah turned to see a little ballerina music box spinning on it's platform. He hadn't touched it. "Hey, Lightning? Did you wind up this music box?" He asked. He hadn't noticed her touch it, either, but with how little he seemed to notice in this place, it didn't seem unlikely. Or maybe it was just old, and the movement in the room had knocked the little keys inside loose.

Lightning nodded but Jonah's comment made her realize something. If they couldn't find their friends, they were going to have to spend the night here. Lightning pulled her phone out of her pocket to check the time; 7 p.m. Had they really been here that long? She arrived here at about 4 but it seemed as if only an hour had passed by.

"Maybe it was homicide." Lightning suggested with a creepy grin on her face. She plugged in cheesy scary movie scenarios where the children were actually psychopaths and killed everyone in their family. Lightning made her way over to the window to look at the backyard of the house to see if maybe their friends were partying out there. Sadly, she saw nothing but overgrown plants and rusting outdoor furniture. "That would have been a perfect place for an afternoon tea." She loved this house. Not because it had a creepy factor, but because it was so old. It fascinated her.

Lightning turned her head to look at Jonah when he asked about the music box. "I didn't touch it." she said as she tilted her head. When did that start playing. The melody was low but the ballerina spun flawlessly. That was puzzling. She walked over to it, inspecting it. The back had a keyhole, probably for turning it on. But there was no key in it, so how did that start?

The female soon went back to the window to inspect the outside again. it was going to get dark soon, and they would no longer have natural light to guide their way in the house. Good thing she brought her lighter. If they could find some candles, they would at least some light. She looked down at the windowsill and saw a large piece of broken glass. Lightning picked it up but immediately dropped it when it cut her hand. She winced at the slight pain and the cut started to bleed. The one day she didn't bring bandaids.
