There was a subtle wind, that was the first thing Xero noticed as his mind was pulled more and more into consciousness. Everything was dark. He drew in a deep breath, his nostrils flaring as he did. Something smelled wonderful, like... like... what was this sensation? The words would not come through the fog of his mind. What was this place? Somethings he felt he knew, just suddenly became aware of, others remained in the fogs of his consciousness.

Slowly his eyes opened to the star filed night. There was a painful bright glow just on the horizon. Was it a 'fire'? He winced and looked away from the bright blaze and turned back to where the sky was still dark enough to see.

His wings flared out and over his head. He looked over the membranes and flexed the tips of his claws. What was this? His long ears perked forward than arched back while he studied the inside of his long webbed wings.

While he watched his wings he was suddenly overcome with the most unpleasant wrenchinbg feeling in his stomach. He could feel the strangest twinge in the tips of his protruding fangs. Something was missing...

Nearby, next to a tree, a ball of white fur was still slumbering, the horn on her head faded away. It remained lite enough for her to enter a very deep sleep and that was all she asked of it In sleep there were no fears. No darkness. Just pleasant thoughts. Confusing and completely random at her still early age, but still pleasant in their own way. It was better than the waking quietness, at least. At first, it was nice. Now it was just a bit lonely.

As the sun rose in the distance and hit her face, Prisca stirred. One pale eye opened and closed, dozing for a few more minutes before the rest of her body fully awoke and wished to be up. The endless search for a place to remain still.

Standing, both eyes fully open, the Ba'lam stretched, claws extending as she let out a big yawn. Blinking a few times, she looked around her for anything interesting enough to guide her path. Her sight caught a flash in the distance, still a little dim in the approaching light of day. Ignorant to the world, nothing told her not to go towards it. Curiosity might kill the cat, yet.

With an eyebrow raised, Prisca looked down at the strange Ba'lam as she came closer, raising her voice above the rush of the wind. "Do you require some assistance, sir?"

Xero's long ears leaned toward the pleasant sound carried over the wind. His bright eyes scrolled acorss the ever brightening horizon to catch a glimpse of something silver. As if a bit of the stars above had collected on the planes.

Despite the elegance and beauty in the form before him, all the sight did was remind him of the painful twisting in his stomach. The tips of his long fangs seemed to scream for some action. They were for gathering something locked away within the flesh of those that did not have wings like his; That is what his instincts told him. His stomach would not unknot and his limbs would be filled with more life if only take what was within her flesh? The question somehow seemed wrongly answered to Xero, however the pain was louder than common sense at the moment.

Without second though he begun to approach the silvery star with the pleasant voice.

"I believe I do..." He responded to the call darkly, his intentions woven into his words.

And that was the day Prisca learned to be more wary of strangers. Next time she wouldn't be so quick to offer her help. 'Specially to one with wings such as his.

Before she got too close, the Light Ba'lam stopped in her tracks, digging her front claws into the ground to avoid falling over in her haste. She didn't like the way that sounded. No, not at all. And considering she was perfectly aware of the kinds of things she ate, she could only assume this make had a similar appetite. Only it didn't appear he was looking to snack on small rodents like she did. And that sent a shiver down her spine.

However, she didn't run. Or back away. She in turn was a predator herself and knew what usually happened when one ran from a predator. The instinct to run in prey triggered the instinct to chase in the hunter. Of course, if he was hungry enough, he'd still come after her. And with those wings and his bulk, he'd overtake her. There was also nowhere to hide. Not unless she got up a tree, but, again, he could probably fly.

Perhaps should could steer his thoughts away from her?

Both eyebrows shot upwards as she moved her body backwards to keep the respectful distance between them. She kept her tail up above her back, the tip of it grazing her scales to avoid tripping over it. Because that certainly wouldn't make this situation worse.

"Such as?"

Xero watched her frame very carefully while he made his calculated approach. All the muscles in his limbs tensed in preperation for a chase. His mind had believed that the pray before him would simply begin to run away. Not that he had experienced pray running away before, but something seemed right about the idea.

Sharp claws dug at the ground with each step.

Something inside the pray before him was what he needed, something he would have to tear her appeart to get to. Again, something in the back of his mind screamed that was wrong, but that voice he chose to ignore for now. His fangs were much longer than the creature before him, obviously this meant that he had to use them to tear into things to get what he needed.

Her question threw him off, however. Such as? What was it called that he needed? Xero's brow furrowed a bit, but his steps continued to be unhindered by the slight confusion.

That same voice that he had been ignoring sudenly became very clear. It knew what he needed, instincts had told him;

"Your blood..."

Before the words could vanish into the cool pre-morning breeze Xero lept after his pray. The rising sun was making it harder to see clearly, but his mind was too focused on settling that twist in his stomach to care. His wings extended and gave a single flap as he charged forward.

Oh dear.

That was what she was expecting, but certainly not what she was hoping to hear. Or see. Being stalked like a prey animal by one of your own. Despite the differences in appearance, a part of her brain was telling her they weren't all that different. Though of course still ignorant of those differences. The one thing that remained a constant reminder was his size compared to hers. If he was looking to make her into his meal, he would.

But perhaps there was a chance.

Quick reflexes kicked in and she turned on the spot, trying to use her lighter weight to gain the upper ground. Less weight for her legs to carry she hoped would allow her to move faster. Rodents were different. They didn't move as fast, though they sure knew how to hide and zig-zag. That might be an option if he wasn't so much bigger than her.

The tree Prisca had been napping under just a short while earlier loomed quickly in front of her. Without thinking, she jumped, extending her claws to grab onto the bark and pull herself up onto a thick branch. She squatted there, trying to catch her breath, but also posed to jump up higher if she needed to. With his size, it was logical that she could go higher onto thinner branches and expect her weight to be supported.

Xero plowed forward with as much strength he could muster. Dark claws tore at the earth as he raged forward. There was a way to satisfy that pinch in his gut and it was being difficult! The zig-zaging was hard for him to keep up with, especially as his sight seemed to get worse and worse. His eyes almost felt as if they were going to burn out of their sockets. The world around was becoming one giant orb of light with few recognizable shapes.

Than, as Prisca neared her tree, the sun broke over the distant hills. Golden rays poured over the land and showered the trees in a brilliant golden light. Brilliant for some, not for one such as Xero. In one second it felt as if the sun itself had reached forward and plucked out his eyes. The entire world lost every shape to a never-ending infernal glow. On instinct Xero shut his eyes and released a terrible roar before-

*THUNK*

Even behind shut eyelids the world flashed while a sharp pain seemed to split his skull. The impact of his skull to the bark no doubt shook the tree....

Xero groaned than growled.

"What have you done?!" He roared while his turned this way and that, ears perked forward than swiveled back.

The world was dark, his sight completely gone. And now he had a splitting headache to accompany the stabbing feeling in his gut.

Prisca's perch trembled as the other's head made impact. She extended her claws into the bark to keep from falling, digging in as deep as she could manage without snapping them off. The skin under her fur would be turning white from the strain. Falling from this height would hurt, even if there wasn't a bloodthirsty B'alam below it. Pale eyes shut tight, she remained in that position until she was sure the tree would no longer move. He wasn't trying to get up.

Why wasn't he trying to get up?

Peeking open one eye, the pale Light glanced down at the slightly darker creature so similar, yet different, from her.

"Done?" she asked, her tone increasing with each word as emotions welled up inside her chest. "What have I done?" Opening both eyes, Prisca glared down at him, oblivious to the fact he could no longer see her even a little, even with opened eyes. She was just another white spot on a field of white. "What in the green earth are you doing? You.....You.....Cannibal!"

Xero's ears turned toward the increasing tone of his pray. Like a snap of lightning he turned his head upward with a snarl. His eyes tried to peek out from under their cover, however were forced to quickly retreat to escape the burning light.

"Cannable?!" He snarled.

Without any more intention to talk to this meal he turned toward the tree. This time he was careful to feel his way with his paws. Once he found the bark he grabbed on with both paws tightly. Sharp claws dug deep as he pulled himself up toward the noise. All he had was smell and sound to guide him. Follow that precious scent. He was almost there, it had to have been close.

The anticipation fueled the muscles in his arms and helped him pull faster. His wings flared slightly. Almost-

*WACK!*

Another flash of light overtook behind his eyelids and was accompanied by a surge of pain on his brow. The shock was enough to loosen his grip on the tree. Within seconds his claws were loose from the bark and the ground was harshly upon his back.

"Umph!" Xero huffed upon impact.

With his eyes closed there was no way he could have seen that thick branch in his way while he was climbing, nor that he was no where near to his pray.
Now all he could smell was the metallic scent of his own blood, which, did not seem as appetizing as the one he was pursuing. Xero flared his nostrils. The sweet scent of his pray was more overtaken by this metallic smell. What was going on?!

"Yes!" the Light yelled, not caring how her voice would travel or lure him to her location better. Provided he could even get up onto her branch, that was. The branch currently bearing her weight was sturdy and long. Long enough to hold her up unless another tried to join her or force her off. At the moment she was holding onto it for dear life. A fitting position for the situation, given she had no idea if she was about to lose what short life she had had. She couldn't stay up here forever. Maybe a few hours. Until hunger or thirst drove her down. She wasn't feeling either enough to want to move quickly.

"Canniaah!"

The response ended in a small gasp as the other started to climb her tree. Releasing her hold on the branch, Prisca turned herself around carefully, trying not to slip as the tree shuddered slightly, and posed herself to easily jump onto the next branch if he got too close. She tried to keep silent, kept her breathing slow, though the scrap of her claws on the bark would easily give her away.

But when he just ended up hurting himself more, she relaxed. And, unexpectedly to herself, broke out in giggles at the spectacle. Part relief, part amusement.

What was the matter with this male?

Peering over the side, the Light lady couldn't resist a little tutting at his predicament.

"Oh. You appear to be bleeding. I would come down and help you, but, I'm afraid I would just end up helping you more than I would like."

Xero's wings stretched out than folded over his face to block that obnoxious brightness from his eyes. Slowly he tried to open them again. This time he managed a mere squint, however, the membranes in his wings filtered in just enough light to where it was still very uncomfortable to have them open. And he still could not see his prey.

He growled to the chime of giggles above him. That noise seemed to embody the very essence of the current predicament.

"Tell me what have you done!" Xero demanded again, ignoring the smell of his own blood and the hollow offer from above. At least, hollow so far as he was concerned.

This brightness had to be coming from the pray. She had been so bright and colorful in the field before. Her fur had a strange glossiness to it as if those bright dots in the sky were collected there... this was completely her fault.

Prisca sat on the branch, letting her tail curl over the edge as it hugged both her hind legs, taking up a proud pose as if she'd accomplished something difficult. She supposed she did. She had avoided becoming someone's dinner, after all. Until he yelled at her once more did she hold that pose. Then she smirked at him, unaware he was completely blind for the moment. Nothing thus far suggested otherwise. He had been able to see her perfectly fine just a short while ago when he had decided to chase her up a tree like some small tree dwelling rodent.

Oh, yes. That was, unfortunately, a fitting similarity. Prisca herself didn't like hunting the bigger animals and stuck to the smaller ones, sometimes chasing them up trees much like she was. Thinking of herself as this male's rodent put a sour taste in her mouth. So much so she screwed up her face for a moment before letting the expression, and the thought, drop from her head.

Once more, she leaned over the edge of the branch for a closer look at him. So the sunlight hurt him? Interesting. For there was no other reason to shield ones eyes so unless from pain.

"I have done nothing," the female answered, taking on a polite tone of voice now that she seen she was very likely out of danger. She even volunteered to give one paw a little grooming, the dirt from the earlier exercise still clinging to her fur. "And I certainly do not know what you refer to. But I do suggest you get that wound looked at soon."

Xero's frame shuddered with a low-doom ridden growl. How dare his meal tell him what he needed and deny any involvement in taking his sight away! Once again he tried opening his eyes with nothing new in results. The brightness bit at his very sockets and caused his eyes to retreat instantly behind a safe dark cover.

"You have done something! Why else would my eyes burn!?" Xero roared with flared nostrils.

He could smell and hear a bit better now, however he was in too much pain to even consider using this height in his other senses as an advantage. His head throbbed, pounded while his eyes still burned. The rage burning through his ribcage didn't help ease any of the frustration. What an unpleasant world!

*humph* Xero scoffed than added with a snarl. "Than you come down here and look at it!"

"It is far too bright," Prisca answered, still sweeping her tongue along her paw and talking in between licks, "for me to have done anything." The yelling from below did little to affect her, aside a little ear twitch. So loud and obnoxious! He didn't have to yell to get his point across. How rude.

Not that saying it nicely would have gotten a better reaction from her. As if she was going down there. She knew what was waiting for her if she did. Nothing short of a fire would get her out of this tree.

"Maybe you should go find a hole to crawl into," the Light suggested, a smirk on her face at her own wit, putting her paw down on the branch and stretching her claws over it. The air was filled with the sound of scratching as she tightened and relaxed her claws before stretching her back out a little and sitting still. "I bet it would be dark under there." Chuckling and leaning over the side, she added, "Or you come up here."

Xero's fur bristled to the blunt mockery of the one who was formally thought as easy pray. His tail whipped around behind him while his frame shook with rage. There was nothing he could do to make her eat those words. Nothing. That thought alone made his skin crawl unpleasantly.

"You would not be saying such things if were were on the ground, my pray."
Xero snarled, highlighting the last word.

He was not going to leave or give up what he had started. Soon this, whatever it was, was going to wear off and he was going to catch her. The hope of that renewed his determination, and yet only fueled that tight burning grip in his chest. The burning caused the wound in his head to throb even more. Waiting, he was coming to realize, was a pain. He wanted it now, his tight-knotted stomach wanted revenge now.

The bridge of his nose wrinkled. It seemed to be getting brighter, even with his eyes shut tight...
