As opposed to PMing people and becoming quite confused, I'm starting a private group discussion, so we can talk about our entry in the "Bright & Spooky" contest!
Such matters as our plans for the individual characters, whether or whether not the family will stay together or split up, various family dynamics, and future plots within the family.
BAM! Let's do it.
((Note - To anyone who is also joining the B&S Contest, please don't still our ideas.))

Okie dokie lokie! So, I've been doing some work on the Mama, who I've named as Sirena, and I'm putting what I've come up with her so far, down below.
Please give feedback and the like! Additionally, if you've been thinking about what you want your character to be like, post it here! I look forward to seeing everyone else's ideas!
Name: Sirena
Temper: Musical
Personality: Sirena by nature is a sweet, intelligent mare. She possesses a clever wit and a silver-tongue, which was toned by the mares around her. She was taught to believe that stallions are not worthy of her attention, and that they are below her. They are only means for producing fillies, her herd taught her. With a shy look and a pretty song, the boys will come running, but they haven't the depth a mare does.
Upon meeting Etienne, she will realize the teachings from her herd to be false, and her condescension will fall away into admiration for the stallion. She will become affectionate towards him, before finally falling in love and ignoring the rules of her herd (as seen as in her History) and follow him wherever he chooses to go. She will gradually become a kinder and more open mare as her life with him continues, and develop a motherly kindness come the time where she has foals with him.
History: Sirena was born into from a herd entirely existing of female Soquili. In such a herd, she was taught to sing and she was rumored to have one of the most lovely voices in all the herd, which was saying something.
Now, I suppose you're wondering how she could've been born into a herd with only females within, yes? Well, these mares and fillies had a very special ability. When they came of adult age, they would leave the herd to find a stallion, though not by normal means. All a mare of this herd needed to do, was let her voice be carried on the wind, and her singing voice be heard by a stallion nearby. As if by magic, a stallion would surely appear, and the two would produce a foal. The herd only allowed that female foals could be brought back, so if a colt was born, the mare would abandon it with its father. On the other hoof, if a daughter (or even two) were born, both baskets would be stolen away and taken back to the herd to be cared for by all of the mares, not just her mother.
When Sirena came of age, she was sent on her way she went out into the unknown world, to find herself a stallion like the mares before her. However, instead of bursting into song straight away, a new curiosity came over the mare, and she started to explore the world around her, forgetting the life she'd come from. She heard new birdsong, and the music of nature around her. It was so beautiful and so foreign, that Sirena forgot the life she'd come from little by little, as she continued to explore this new world.
Having forgotten her purpose, the mare continues on to search for enlightenment in this strange new world. She desires to learn of all sorts of music and the like. Will she ever remember how she came to be out in the world in the first place, and will she remember the herd that waits anxiously for her return?
((There are two ideas I have now, on how they should meet. The first is that Sirena could be singing one day, just for the purpose of singing not for the sake of finding a mate, when Etienne came upon her. She would then remember why she came out here, and try to follow her herd's law, and not become attached to the stallion, only have his foals, only to fail and fall in love with Etienne, and having to decide whether she'd go back to her family, or stay with Etienne and abandon what she knows best.
The other idea, is that she could just happen upon Etienne, or he upon her, without her having sung. Again, she would remember who she was, but be distressed about the situation, because she thought the only way a stallion would find her is if she was singing first. She would feel like the "black sheep" of the herd, but as she got to know Etienne better, she would accept that and willingly rebel against her herd, choosing not to go back to them, even after she had her foals.))
Quirks: For a long while, Sirena will be haunted by the past and thoughts of her herd. She will grow to ignore the pangs of regret she gets for abandoning her herd without a word to them as to why, and she will neglect the desire to return to them and explain.
When she has her foals, she will likely be surprised when it is her son who appears more inclined to song ((I say this only because of what the basket looks like)) as it's normally the female who is compelled to sing, but she will accept it nonetheless, and realize that the life she lives away from her herd, is considerably better than the one she possessed while living with the other mares.
Personality: Etienne, often called 'Ghost' by others for his uncanny ability to dissapear and stay hidden for long periods of time is a very traditional stallion. He wants nothing more than to settle down and have a long, full life with many children and a loving mate. Sadly his looks and profession have kept him from that dream. He knows very well that others, even those from his former herd, called him odd or outright scary but he would just let the words slide off of him like rain off the wing of a duck. He is also very dedicated to his job, or well former job for the herd. He was a scout and was tasked with keeping his herd in the know of all things coming and going from their lands. To this day his training still serves him well and he will often make use of it to keep his family safe from harm.
History: Once long ago he was a scout for a herd from a faraway land. He would often range far and wide to find any information of the comings and goings of others in the valley that he called home. When he was just a colt his father the, at the time, head scout of the herd trained him in all things survival. When the time came for him to take up his father's mantle and become the head scout he would need the ability to survive alone for long periods without any help for in his herd scouts did their jobs alone. When the day came for him to take up the role his father had trained him to he was so proud. The Alpha Stallion gave the speech and he gave his oath to always protect and serve his herd. The oath he gave freely and with a fierce pride that made his father tear up. Shortly after the oaths his father came forward and with the aid of his familiar, Marin the ferret, bestowed upon Etienne the pelt that each head scout wore upon his back and the chain cuff that signified his ties to the herd. He happily accepted both and swore to his father that he would not fail him. Love was not something his father expressed easily, at least not since Etienne's mother had died, but he told his son that day how very proud he was and that he loved him with all his being.
Years passed, and Etienne kept his oath, always bringing news to the leaders of the herd. One day he was out on a ranging mission that took him to the canyon that was the herds' exit to the outlands. Rarely was a scout sent on a mission here but the Alpha Stallion had heard some troubling stories that a skinwalker might be prowling about. Etienne had been dispatched shortly afterward to find the truth of this tale. He reached the canyon without any trouble, and found a blood trail that led through the jagged walls of the ravine. Setting his jaw the stallion walked carefully following the blood trail until he came to the corpse of a small filly, slain and half eaten. Sick with the sight Etienne wandered closer to the body noting that it was not one from his own herd. Curious how this filly came to be here he explored around for a bit but found no evidence, not even a scent trail to follow for the musky death ridden smell of the skinwalker that had done this ended at her body. The young scout was baffled but continued forward through the canyon scenting carefully to ensure he was alone. Suddenly the world came alive with scents most prevalently the stink of death. He looked up to where it was coming from and saw three forms at the top of the canyon. Each bore a pelt of a different animal. Cat, wolf, and bear. The bear pelted stallion stepped forward and laughed maniacally drawing Etienne's attention to it. Sadly he did not see what the wolf was doing while his attention was on the bear. With a quick kick of his back hooves the wolf sent a rock crashing into the canyon with the intent of crushing Etienne! Quick as a striking snake he dodged it. The sound of it hitting the canyon floor was deafening. He sneered up at the skinwalkers and watched carefully. Suddenly a crack sounded through the canyon. The crashing boulder had started a rockslide and the only way to survive it was to run, so run he did. Faster and faster through the canyon his sides heaving at the exertion. Barely outrunning the falling rocks and receiving many cuts and bruises when sharp rocks rained down upon his flanks. He broke out of the canyon into the night air of the outlands just as the slide finished. His breath was sharp and pained as he turned to look back at the entrance to his home. Dismayed at the sight he tried futilely to find his way back. As far as he'd been told this was the only way out of the herd lands. He was literally locked out of him home with no way to return. Suddenly a laugh from behind him. He whirled to see the cat pelted skinwalker, a mare with wings bearing a resemblance to the Kalona species. Her red eyes mocked him as she said simply, "I have no need to kill you today little scout for you are not worth my time. Your herd however will make a lovely plaything for my friends and I..." She said the word friends as if it was poison on her tongue and took wing flying back towards the canyon. Towards his home! He cursed her for a coward and screamed himself hoarse for her to return and fight him fairly. She paid him no heed and kept flying. Late that night he could swear he heard the screams of his family carried on the wind, along with the scent of blood and death. He paced back and forth until a blood red sunrise rose in the east and only then did he finally give up and realize he was never going home...
Quirks: He is often mistaken for a skinwalker and some will flee in fright when he shows himself to them. This bothers him immensely and while he might try to explain they will not give him the chance. He is extremely possessive of his mate and doesn't tolerate other stallions to get too close to her!

For the son ouo!
Name: Lamont
Temper: Thespian
Personality: The first day out of his basket, Lamont was always adventurous and outgoing. From his mother, he got his wit, but from his father, he got silent intimidation. If he said nothing, others would be wary of him, but once he starts to talk, he's friendly and others come to adore him.
He's very charismatic and can naturally pull people towards him. He can kinda 'turn it off' though with aspects from his father. (Mostly, he likes changing his demeanor).
History: UHM. IDK. I can see him leaving a string of broken hearts not because he's mean, but likes pushing himself to be able to do that (well, different sorts of acting). So I can see him like... Act a certain way to get what he wants just because he wants to test his skill.
I can kinda see him trying to out-ego a walker or something.
Okay so he's probably egotistic XD;
Quirks: Lamont finds himself to be an actor, whether he be trying to convince his mother that he was too sick to walk a certain day or wooing a girl just to see if he could do it. He likes to challenge himself and could possibly get himself in trouble one day.
I just noticed the close time for this and I'll be at work still then, but here's what i have so far xD;

I'm curious if you have an explanation for the ball and chain on the father's front hoof~ ^^
I sort of want to see the girl if we win before coming up with a personality for her. I have a couple of rough ideas, though.

Also, before I really come up with a personality for my girl, I sort of want to see what she looks like. I have a couple of rough ideas for her.
Snips from the history:
History

Do you think it needs more depth? I did try to add it in as much as possible...

No worries Cy. I figured that the ferret would attach the cuff and chain and his father would give him the pelt.
Now we just need some plot ideas for the family and what kind of dynamic they will have.

The daughter. This is very rough. xD;;
Name: Senka Regayle (maybe?)
Temper for Cert: ???
Personality: It really depends on how she looks. I usually try to get my soquili to be similar to how they appear and what breed they are. I could see her going in many directions, but overall she will be a very sweet girl, since both her parents are loving and sweet.
If she does have a bit of a creepier appearance, similar to her fathers, I could see her being confused why others run away from her. She will try to explain and get others to understand that she isn't a monster. At first, she will be afraid to go around others if they are fearful for the way she looks and she will try to blend in with the shadows, which will only make her seem a little creepier.
If she looks like her mother more, (musical edits and such) I could see her loving music and wishing she could sing as beautifully as her mother. Perhaps she is unable to sing for some reason, so she must express herself through dance, rather than singing.
In both instances, I could see her butting heads with her brother. xD Mostly just brother/sister picking fun at each other. He can be the actor and she will be the dancer (perhaps?)
Maybe I'll combine the two?
History: After her basket, she mostly sticks around her family, but she likes to enjoy going out and meeting others. Perhaps it is during this time that she runs into a soquili that thinks she is scary looking (since her basket looks very similar to the father).
I can see her coming home and telling her parents. Maybe her father comforts her by explaining how others feel about him appearing like a skinwalker and her mother comforts her by explaining that when she is upset (or something) that she sings. This could lead to the filly trying to sing and failing.
So then the filly must find a new outlet, which she turns to dance.
Quirks: Dancing and sulking in the shadows.
I really think she will look up to both her parents equally. She will look up to her mother's beauty and her father's strength.

Building off of what you're saying, Heart...
I like the idea of a theatrical herd, maybe one that preforms for the entertainment of others. They could either make it a purely family group, or they could branch out and invite other preforming Soquili to join their group. (Heck, maybe we could make a herd out of it.)
With future plots, we could have Sirena trying to teach the foals (and maybe Etienne, too! x3 ) how to sing, or at least how to express themselves in a manner that shows emotion to an audience. Voice exercises are also a possibility, that might be particularly useful to Lamont.
Again, if they wanted to become a band or herd that specialized in the preforming arts, they could travel to search for more Soquili to join their herd, and maybe they'd be able to learn about new ways to expand their own talents. (Etienne could be a recruiter or "scout" for new talent, Sirena would specialize in singing, Lamont in theatre and acting, and Senka in dancing.)
