Night was falling over Icpitl's woods. The ranger had climbed into a tree with a half-eaten rabbit in his jaws before curling up in his nest to finish dinner by starlight. The sun was still sinking in the sky, though it didn't have much further to go now. The earth triber sighed and smiled to himself. It would be a beautiful night, and cool and breezy tomorrow. Icpitl liked days like that. Sure, there were branches to remove from paths and from streams where they caused stagnant pools to form, but for the most part, days like that were pleasant and full of bird song. The birds were going to bed now, finishing their last conversations of the evening before they needed to hide from owls. Bugs clicked and sang in the undergrowth below, and fireflies were starting to light up the night.
Icpitl closed his eyes. Day, night, dawn, afternoon--didn't matter, it was all the same to him (more or less). All beautiful, all safe. All--was that a shadow in the sky? Moving toward him? Icpitl frowned and sniffed at the air. The unmistakable musk of another B'alam, this one tinged with...limestone, yes, bat, and...blood? Suddenly, the night didn't seem so safe. The ranger's fur bristled and he watched the dark shape in the sky with lip twitching. Not good. Very not good. He pushed the half-eaten rabbit behind him in his nest and wriggled under a canopy of branches. He waited for the ominous shape to come.
