Amarus was studying. She hated books, though, so she had recorded one of her club members reading the text aloud, and put in earbuds off of a stolen ('borrowed') eyePod. She didn't own one herself, naturally, and had trained Songbird to drop off messages for her, but now and again it was more useful to have one than to not.
She didn't remember that she'd had one at all, or that it had drowned in a bowl of punch. She remembered dancing, and lights, and some distant part of her remembered the elastic sting of a broken heart on prom: she just couldn't place why.
In any case, it was about as serene as Amarus would likely ever get: silently mouthing along to the audio as she hovered, cross-legged, above a bench, her hands snaking in and out of a potted exotic-looking (and carnivorous-looking) plant as she pruned it and tended to it. Now and again a young bud would bite at her, and draw what seemed to be her blood: pink, glowing faintly, a hazy aura flickering around her skin that dimmed for a second as it was punctured and then flared back to life. It didn't seem to phase her. It was a necessary evil.
Amarus was delayed in her senses; if someone approached, or had been there all along, she wasn't exactly on the lookout.

Believing she hadn't heard, but looking up at the stranger to try to understand the context, Amarus pulled an earbud out and at first stared at the Conquest clansman before piecing together what was likely happening. "It's a natural anaesthetic of sorts," she replied, in an attempt to explain that she no longer minded if the plant bit her.
"I'm hoping it will flower and produce a similar effect," she added. Amarus took her hands out from the snapping plant and showed her the myriad of small cuts along her digits: the pink-purple fluid oozed out, but Amarus seemed fine. She brought one of the particularly damaged fingers to her mouth and licked a healthy drop away from the spectral flesh. "Tastes pretty good, too" she added. "Curious?" and held out one hand, sliced fingers offered to the stranger with a wicked, lopsided smile.

It was really adorable, and it only seemed to encourage Amarus. After all, she hadn't done more than kiss someone's cheek, as far as she could remember. So the idea that anyone could be so cutely shy appealed to her. In a predatory sense. "Is it?" she asked.
"So it is inappropriate if you know where it comes from," she suggested, licking the drop off her finger instead, and then reaching into her outer robe to withdraw a vial of her essence, "Do you think this is the same? Many have taken it from these vials, and in baked foods. What do you think the difference might be?"
Amarus smiled wickedly, and then shook her head, slotting the vial back into her outer robe. "I am Amarus, Lotus Eater. You may find that I am unpleasant company to keep," she added.
Then, she invited the young clansman closer. "Would you like to see the plant?"

Conquest always made her feel more welcome, and as a result watching Yuzhi look vulnerable somehow made Amarus less predatory. In fact, the little Clansman was interesting, and Amarus found herself listening relatively attentively. "I have never wondered at someone making me ill, but I certainly have learned the fine edge of supplying a demand," Amarus said, and nodding agreement.
"You are right, we are hardly that close. I did not think you would take me up on it, so it was a bluff on my part," she admitted. She liked this Yuzhi individual. She liked her a lot. "I like that you would be so honest in your assessments," she added, as a compliment, a genuine smile on her face.
Amarus pushed the plant forward. It had many heads, that looked a bit like venus flytraps. They were purple, however, with longer fangs than they ought have, and they moved quickly whenever any fingers were nearby. Down amongst the leaves were little pods, transparent lips folded over a pink-purple essence that looked a lot like her own. "I could not sustain the amounts of my essence I was extracting, so I found a way to grow it in this modified plant. It is the only successful prototype so far, I am afraid it is slow-going."
"Do you know anything about plants, little Scholar?"

Amarus knew all about the disdain with which others might view such naked assessments of a situation. In fact, she lived it rather often. It was easier to be in isolation and to say nothing than to deal with the intricacies of that problem.
"It takes a strong stomach to handle honesty, I suspect," she said, leaning back. "The end of a life... Not quite what I'm after, it's true," she added, looking just as sad for a moment as Yuzhi thought it seemed, the concept of preserving plants after they had died.
"Death has had a hand in enough of me, I think it is time we parted ways-- do you not think so?" she joked, the corner of her mouth quirking as she extended one aura-glowing hand to Yuzhi, and turned it so her palm was up, concentrating so her spectral flesh became transparent.
As if it was a secret she would rather keep, she pulled her hand back, skin tangible again, and looked off into the distance.

Amarus liked this conquest clansman, she had definitely decided. It also made her miss Na'ima. "Coddling. I wonder what that was like? I cannot imagine I would have taken to it well," Amarus said, contemplating. She would have liked the idea that they had not enough discipline, if Yuzhi had said it aloud.
Amarus was surprised that that of all things drew the little Conquest mare closer. "I am, regrettably, though I know nothing about what I was before-- a curse or a blessing, I wonder? I struggled for a long time with the question as to whether or not I had a soul, or if I am hollow."
She thought fondly of Mort.
"My day to day life? I train in the morning, I fight with my kuji-kiri in mind to focus my being, I run where I am not supposed to, I go where I feel, I visit my birds in their aviary... It is above all of utmost importance for me that my spirit-flesh, my mind, and my heart are pure."
By pure she meant focused, strong, without weak link.

Amarus was equally eager not to speak on the subject. She leaned back for a moment, looking upwards, and then shut her eyes so that all she had was Yuzhi's voice to listen to. The more she spoke with Yuzhi, the more Amarus liked her, and thought she was a bit like a blossom herself. Petals that unfolded slowly to show her heart.
Amarus' throat constricted as she heard Yuzhi's words: maybe once you were hollow. To be told, even by Yuzhi, that it was possible she had made a soul for herself, meant a lot.
"Yuzhi, I am glad that we have met today," Amarus said, finally. "I once thought that all I cared about was revenge, but I think there is no room for it in my heart now. I hope you and I can be friends," Amarus said, smiling at Yuzhi. Really smiling at her.

In fact, Amarus rarely felt so fond of anyone at all. She seemed to get along uncharacteristically well with the clansmen, far better than she ever got along with students. Yuzhi and Na'ima, in particular, though Yuzhi had a different quality to her that made it so pleasant to be around her.
"I cannot help but wonder what you will become in time, Yuzhi. I hope that I am there to see the transformation myself," she said, quietly, as she looked off into the distance again. Amarus would have understood, if Yuzhi had admitted to feeling the need for revenge still. She had been present when Conquest was torn apart, and though one of her friends had made it back, the other had not. She had never felt so at home, as a young student, as she had when visiting Conquest. In fact, she had taken a swim amongst the lotuses and felt as though she should never leave.
The decision had been made for her, and it wasn't even her proper home, not like Yuzhi. Yuzhi, who had cause to mourn it and who Amarus would never fault for her feelings of revenge. In fact, Amarus would be exactly the appropriate ghoul to ask to fight alongside her-- steadfast, determined, precise, unyielding. Traits that, in personal relationships, made her unbearable made her useful in battle.
"Aptly put, Yuzhi," she agreed, and leaned back. "Since I do not have a phone in particular, perhaps we can meet up now and again? We could even do normal things, I have heard they are pleasant-- I am, personally, unsure. One of my birds may visit you some day with a message, feel free to attach a reply. Unless you have a better idea?" Amarus asked, tilting her head, bells ringing.
