One down, four to go.

Kenner had never been big on standardized testing, but when he found himself with intel on the locations of the pieces of a broken artifact and a regularly updated list of scarelings looking to prove themselves... well... he couldn't pass up the promise of free labor.

Early one Moonday morning, long before the sun came up, he personally delivered a pair of envelopes to Agsilved's and Tavadia's dorm rooms, slipping them under their doors before disappearing into the dark.

Quote:
Hello! Welcome to Agsil and Tavi's Y2 exam!

You should have received a PM from Kenner with further instructions. If you didn't, let me know. You each have three map pieces. You must assemble all six to proceed. Your characters can find each other and meet anywhere they'd like to do this. RP it out. Have fun!

If neither of you currently have access to an image editing program, just RP putting the map together over two posts each (Agsil, Tavi, Agsil, Tavi or the other way around) and I'll do it for you!

Quote Smerdle when you're ready to proceed! If you have any questions, PM me.

There'd been no fuss that night. No snarling drakeling, no yipping pygmy visel. Nothing to suggest there was an issue or a change or... anything. She'd woken up that morning, gotten dressed, ready to deal with the day.

Only change to her routine was when her foot landed on something that didn't feel like the stone of her dorm. Peering down, she lifted the envelope with a snort. Another game from Tavi? Harassment from Spinar? Someone complaining about her recent bouts of blasting music? None of the above. Kenner? A professor? The note and scraps of paper--a map?--were stared at, re-read a few times, and the first real coherent thought Agsil had about the whole thing was the disgruntled thought that she really hadn't slept enough for this. Knobbs?

Well. Least that line cheered her up as she took out her phone and sent a quick text to Tavi.

Check by your door for an envelope if you haven't already. Open it up, take what's in there, and meet me outside the Demon Dorms.

Agsil grabbed up a messenger bag and placed her own envelope and contents within. A map? To what? The maze was obvious just from her own pieces. Just what exactly had the professor set them up with..? Curious thoughts had her moving quickly to the other dorms, though hardly sure she'd beat the kitsune. Unless he was still sleeping.

That could be a problem.

"MOCHA ! YOU ROTTEN LITTLE STINK WE-" The kitsune's yells were instantly silenced when his phone beeped across the room. For the moment his chase went cold on the mini, allowing said mini to properly hide under his desk to claw at the envelope it had scooped up. Flopping across his bed Tavi glared at the mini than stuck his tongue out as he flipped his phone open to read the message.

Agsil . Tavi giggled as the name came up, pleased to see the dragon was still doing well with the phone he gifted her. It made him happy to see his friends using things he got for them, so fuzzy. Pressing enter he read over the message then frowned deeply.

It had to be something to do with that jacking envelop the one Mocha was tearing up. Tavi's eyes snapped at his own thoughts and he pounced from the bed on the mini, pulling the slightly shredded envelope out of its maw. "NAUGHTY! B A A A D !" Bopping its bottom with the end of the envelope the kit rose up to finally peek inside and read over the contents. What he found had that ever encourageable, and slightly annoying light to his teal eyes.

Excitidly, he bounced for his bright yellow backpack, throwing the map pieces into the bag and the poorly written message along with some tape and snacks before jetting out the door. Racing to the front of the demon dorms, Tavi skidded to a breathless halt. After a doubled-over pant he peered up and grinned to the ghoul in the distance. Saving the world with a friend and potentially grading to knobs? He was thrilled, clearly, waving frantically he announced nearly turning red from lack of properly breathing, "IB TAPE!"

Well at least he wasn't asleep. Agsil lifted an ink stained hand in greeting, amused to see the kitsune so... energetic. And rather out of breath. Her gaze flicked to the dorms behind him. How much of a rush had he been in, to be that worn? She picked up her pace a bit, intent on getting things started. There was a bit of a thrill about the whole thing. A game? An assignment? All of the above? She was already curious. What were the x's on the map supposed to be?

Tavi's outburst made her grin--after a quick guess to what he meant by his shorthand speech. Tape. He had tape. "Perfect thinking," she praised as she approached, reaching into her bag to pull out the envelope. "Do you have yours then?" Once she was close to the boil, she crouched down, laying her three pieces of the map out on the ground. Glancing up at Tavi, she held out her hand towards him. "May I? Or would you rather?" Her hand retracted a bit, head cocking to the side. She didn't care who put the map together. So long as it was done.

The pieces she did have were easy enough to recognize. Assuming she was holding them right. Two corners and.... an outer edge. Which edge, she hadn't a clue. But it did look like one corner matched up to that outer edge, going by the rips and what seemed to be the right continuation of the lines. She wouldn't know for sure till she saw Tavi's, though. Pausing in her thoughts, she eyed the kitsune, a smirk playing at her lips. "Not another one of your 'follow me' games, right?" She was teasing. Although. She could see him pulling a strange stunt like this.

Beaming as Agsil approached then crouched he nodded. His shoulders shrugged as he pulled his backpack off. Kneeling too, or rather plopping after a moment of it to sit Indian style on the ground, the kitsune started to fish about his bag. Snacks, tape..ah! Grinning he pulled out his pieces and handed them over, not caring either whom put them on but he did fancy pulling tape so.

"Hehe, nope. NOT me this time." Grinning from ear to ear he made a cross over his heart and giggled. A sort of scouts code so the say. His ears swivvled then flickered forward, eyes on the map now as Agsil assembled. Getting the tape out he started to slowly pull pieces off, working with the ghoul as they assembled it.

"...Lotta x's..." He whistled more to himself, eyeing each one in curiosity.

It didn't take the pair long to fit the pieces together, matching up the rips and markings. Once completed, Agsil sat back, frowning down at the maze that lay before them. Tavi's observation was... correct. Ten x's stared back at them throughout the maze. Leaning closer, she frowned. "Here's the entrance," she mumbled, pointing out the first arrow in the bottom left corner. Her finger moved to the bottom right. "You can sort of make out another arrow here. Or at least, none of the other exists have one. I think." Her gaze flicked around the page, but no. Only one other opening to the maze had a marking inside it.

Were they to find each x before leaving? Better yet...

"Now what do we do? Where is this maze?" Was it even an actual maze? A building? The dragon scowled before trying to carefully lift the tapped page to see if there was a clue on the page of the page. Or... well. Anything.

The assembled map did nothing at first; it reacted to laying on the ground and being lifted into the air as one might expect any taped up piece of paper to. A short while later, however, its edges began to glow so faintly that they might have gone unnoticed if one wasn't staring at them. The paper wiggled, loosening the tape that held it, then wiggled some more, glowing brighter and growing hot to the touch as the tape curled, browned, and fell away completely. The pieces pulled together in a flutter of movement, their glow subsiding as they reformed into a single sheet.

User Image

Then the map sent them to hell. No, not really. But it did teleport them somewhere far away.

The cave they found themselves in was dry, hot, and extremely cramped. A soft light emanated from the stone walls that surrounded them and a low buzz could be heard no matter where they stood. Agsil and Tavi wouldn't have to be very observant to figure out that the map they held was a map of this place, but even if they couldn't, it was happy to help them come to that conclusion.

The paper shuddered again as a rhyme slowly appeared on its back.

User Image

It wiggled once more as it broke in half, both sides shifting until they were smaller copies of the original.

It's maze time!

The shortest way through this maze is 23 OOC steps long (80, 66, 52, 39, 40, 53, 67, 68, 69, 70, 83, 95, G, 84, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 89, 100 or 80, 66, 52, 39, 40, 53, 67, 68, 69, 70, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60. 61, 48, E, 62, 76, 77, 89, 100), but surely you don't want to just rush through! If you're looking to pick up some loot, you're going to need more steps. Read on! (or just RP yourself walking through without picking anything but G or E up that's totally cool too XD)

In order to get more steps, you will each need to roll 2d20 and add 23 to your result. This is how many steps you have to get out of the maze.

  • You may pick up anything you pass, but if you venture down a dead end, you must have enough steps to get back out again.
  • There is one of each item for both of you, so you may go for the same ones if you'd like.
  • Some of the items are more beneficial than others, and some may not stack, but none will harm you.

The only way you will be harmed is if you exit through any exit but the one that's marked. Those exits exude a feeling of dread and misery, but if you want to pass through them anyway, you may. (quote me when you do)

Quote:
What the loot looks/feels/sounds like (sorry for double quoting, i forgot this part)

A: A line of small, purple stones shine from a crack in the floor. If you try to pick up more than one, the rest slip through your fingers.

B: The air is thick here, and as you pass through it, you feel a little more confident.

C: Running your hand along the rocky wall, you feel a brief sting against your palm that leaves you feeling slightly stronger.

D: The air is thick here, and as you pass through it, you feel a little more confident.

E: The air is thick here, and as you pass through it, you feel a little more confident.

F: The air is thick here, and as you pass through it, you feel a great deal more confident.

G: The air is thick here, and as you pass through it, you feel a little more confident.

H: A line of swirling green stones shine from a crack in the wall. If you try to pick up more than one, the rest slip through your fingers.

I: You hear a short screech coming from the south. What was that?

J: A line of dim red stones shine from a crack in the ceiling. If you try to grab more than one, the rest slip through your fingers.

There is something at 37, but there is no indication that it's there on the map.

You only need to post once to traverse the entire maze, but you may take as many turns as you like if you want to alternate. At the bottom of your last post, list the path you took to get to the exit and I'll list your loot in the next post. You do both have separate pools of steps, so if you want to go through the maze "together" while getting different items, just have the maze throw up walls between you for a little while to force momentary separation. Basically get through any way you like ICly, as long as it's not too outrageous like going natural form and breaking the place.

Wow. The single thought was all that was getting past his brain at the moment. Eyes on the paper pieces he watched the tape curl as it was burnt away from the glow. Nose wrinkling at a smell he expected the kitsune glanced to Agsil to see if she was seeing the same thing or if he might have temporarily gone insane.

Within a blink of an eye as he turned back to the map, they were teleported. Where? He wasn't sure but it seemed like a cave of some sort, a hot uncomfortable one. Tucking in his elbows a bit Tavi frowned, his tails crackling with soft electric. "...That noise is annoying, yeye?" The buzz was driving his sensitive ears crazy, which meant they were currently flattened to his head.

Just as he was about to ask the obvious of what now, the paper shuddered again and a rhyme slowly appeared on its back. With widened teals the kitsune leaned in to silently read, making sure to give Agsil her space as well. Danger in these halls? That alone trilled the boil enough to have him bouncing on the balls of his feet, snatching a map as soon as it split into two he grinned to his friend. "Let's go go gooooo!" Without waiting, since he was far to excited, Tavi dashed ahead, following the map into the maze.

After a few rushed steps in he paused and peered behind him to see if his friend had kept up. Much to his surprise Agsil had been lost, though considering she had a map too she wasn't. At ease with her having her own map Tavi moved on with a giggle, wondering now who would make it out first. Moving along the stone walled cave he frowned, it wasn't really dark but pausing he took a moment to conjure up his fox laterns. The three balls of fox fire floated around him emitting a glow of light to brighten his path and keep him company.

Knowing his comfort would die out soon he picked up his pace. Left to right his gaze shifted as he moved looking for anything that might point out where they were and just looking for anything in general. The x had been right here on the map, of that he was sure, and with another glance it was affirmed. But as he glanced about a sadness washed over him. There was nothing in sight, not an x to mark the spot, not a chest not anything! Stomping his foot Tavi growled into the hall, annoyed with the lack of treasure.

It was by chance that Tavi looked up, and when he did his eyes met a line of dim red stones shining back at him. They were so pretty, pretty enough for him to start scaling the stone wall in attempts to snatch some. After a few failed attempts Tavi was doing a victory dance in the cave hall, stone in hand. "You remind me of San.." He chuckled to the stone as if expecting a response. Tucking it into his backpack the boil moved on, a small grin set in place for finding some loot.

Following the map to the next x, Tavi found himself entering a thick air. It was a bit strange at the moment but as he passed through a sudden rush of confidence hit him. Snuggling up into himself for a moment the kitsune paused, then exclaimed loudly to anything that might be around, "prepare tbb!" Rushing down the cramped hall he began to pant slightly, the heat of the cave getting to him.

As one fox lantern flickered out of existence Tavi paused and flopped to the ground. Giving up a few pants into the air the kitsune stretched then reached back to pull out a snack from his backpack. As he sat and refueled he admired the red stone he had previously found. Rolling it in his hand he wondered what in the world it could be used for or even if it was more than a pretty decoration. Chucking his wrapper to the floor Tavi shot up, energized yet again he pushed on.

Now on the move he glanced back to the map, glancing over the nearest x and then to the exit. Given as he was getting a bit tired the kitsune didn't want to risk going to all the x's and getting lost from tired confusion so he settled on the nearest and went for it at full speed. Within a few minutes and a stumble and trip later he was upon the next x. A quick look around and he spotted a line of swirling green stone in a crack in the wall. More stones? Tavi's head tilted curiously, an ear perking in thought before clamping back tightly to his head as that ungodly buzz came pouring back in.

On a curl of nose he rushed forward, then cautiously pulled out one of the green stones. Admiring the swirl he chuckled in triumph before putting the stone into his bag with the red one. "Hmm...lets see.." Humming to himself he glanced back to the map and looked it over. The exit was close but there was also another close x. Decisions, decisions.

After a moment of inner debate and outward whimpering Tavi decided to just head towards the exit. Carefully however since he was now wondering about the danger from the riddle, and telling himself that it had been way to easy to get to the end. Hoping that Agsil was alright he held his breath before taking a step out of the exit.

She was indeed seeing what Tavi was. The wriggling paper was released without question, violet eyes wide as she stared at the... healing map? As the glowing grew brighter and the tape they'd stuck to it burned, she'd stood, drawing closer to Tavi. This wasn't normal. Not in the slightest. What was this--

The fact they were teleported unnerved Agsilved to her core. Moving all the closer to her tiny companion, the cave was... well. Not the worst place to be. Instantly, her thoughts were of her home, the dens and tunnels carved out of stone amongst the desert. Squashing the sudden panic that this was the lands of her clan, she tried to focus on the differences. The light from the walls, for instance--a strange enough property she might have liked to investigate under different circumstances--and the strange buzzing. Tavi's reaction didn't go unnoticed, but the map brought her attention back.

With a poem.

She actually laughed. "You have got to be kidding me... 'danger lurks beyond these walls'?" It was a dry, very unamused laugh. She was getting uncomfortable flashbacks to memories that weren't quite memories. Agsil made a mental note to have a few words with Kenner the moment she could. But I protect from pain and woe. A chill slithered down her spine. What was this place..?

The map ripped in half, and she looked down at it with a scowl. She hadn't even lifted her head to look to Tavi before he shouted. By the time she even looked up, he was already darting ahead. "Tavi! Stop! This isn't the place to be separated!" Of course she tried to chase him. Yet it seemed as if, by the time he'd rounded a corner... he was gone. "Tavi? Tavi?" She shouted his name, turning in a circle--had she missed him? Yet no sight of the kitsune met her.

There was no reason for her to pause, snarling and racing around turns. At each crossway, she'd look back to the map, making sure she was, in fact, heading straight for the exit. The dim lighting hadn't been of much help. Yet she was sure she would have seen glimpses of Tavi if she were close. At least the glowing walls offered some guidance, and something to look at the map by. And just enough light to keep herself from crashing into walls as she hurried along. She did pause at one point despite herself. She'd reached a T-cross, the cave wall in front of her, and an X to her right according to the map. Gritting her teeth, curiosity burning... she'd turned right. Careful steps padded against the rock, eyes scanning the dead end carefully. No obvious signs at first. No signs of digging, or markings or... anything. Least not on the floor. It was only as she'd been about to turn back that she spotted the crack along the ceiling. Leaping up into the air, her wings stretched out and helped lift her the rest of the distance, snatching up one of the stones before dropping back to the cave floor with a light thud. Pretty thing, she'd give it that, as she rolled it between her fingers, before tucking it into her bag.

Priorities. Like finding Tavi.

Turning back around, she'd bolted down the rest of the hall, crossing over where she'd seen another X. The wave of... well, confidence washed over her as she ran on through the thick air. But it was not without its effects, as she grinned and pushed herself all the harder through the hot halls. This was so her element. Hot, yes. And she could feel the beads of sweat forming along her body. But she was in a hot, dry, cave. She would locate Tavi, and then keep an iron lock on him till they got out of the cave. Then she could just fly them back to Amity if really need be, she thought with a huff, pausing for a small break.

It was more like a lot of huffing, panting as she caught her breath. She was standing before it. The exit. A check to her map confirmed it. Yet... She glanced to her right again. There was another X there. Just a few steps away. Glancing around, sure she didn't see Tavi anywhere or hear him... she took the steps. As she reached the dead end... there wasn't anything. No glowing cracks on the floor, or ceiling, or walls. Nothing. No marks, no runes.... nothing at all. Frowning, unsure what the point was to put an X there, she turned back...

And heard the scream.

"Tavi?" His name was out of her mouth before she could stop herself, and before logic could try and determine if that scream had even remotely sounded like the boil, she was running. Back down the hall, back around the corner... and straight through the exit. I protect from pain and woe, the map's poem had said. So what was beyond the maze? Where was Tavi?

Shortly after they cleared the maze of tunnels and found each other again, the incessant buzzing stopped almost as suddenly as if it had been switched off like an electric light. The space they stood in was dark, not just dark but light devouring, so that any illumination they produced seemed to get sucked away into the air after it had dimly lit their immediate surroundings. The silence was all-encompassing just long enough to be disconcerting, then from out of the dark came the disgruntled whuffling of some sort of animal.

Their maps flared, lighting the area for a moment. The creature that lumbered toward them was very large and confused, and it rudely took the first swing at the innocent students before sitting back and glaring at them.

It had a strange, glowing scepter piercing its septum and swirling eyes the colors of lava, but otherwise it was just a large, strong monster in a deep, dark cavern.

Moments after he exited Agsil did and much to his delight the incessant buzzing stopped. A deep exhale was let out for both reliefs. "I'm totally glad you are ok!" He grinned a bit guilty to the ghoul then proudly pushed a thumb into his chest. Only to pause his announcement for his findings as the last two fox lanterns dissipated and revealed just how dark it was around them.

"..Agsil.." Whispering he attempted to tuck closer to the larger ghoul, eyes glancing from left to right in the darkness. In the silence he grew uneasy, more so when it was broken by a few huffs. An animal? Maybe a wild one? Tavi shifted, his tails coming up to curl comforting around his waist.

Startled by the map flare Tavi took a step back, in doing so he left himself open to be knocked back on his a** when the beast that approached them took the first swing. Hitting the ground, a glare was returned to the beast and his tails crackled wildly with electric. The first thing he noticed was the glowing scepter and with a bolt of his fox fire he shot it towards the device hoping it would conduct and shock the beast for a harder hit. "Agsil! Let's gett'em!" Tavi grinned, wanting to put his new battle skills to the test, the ones the ghoul beside him had been the teacher of.

She'd found him. Relief flooded her near instantly, a clawed hand coming to rest on the boil's shoulder. He was safe. Giving him a quick glance over in the refreshing silence without the buzzing, she could see nothing wrong with him. He didn't look injured. Her brow furrowed. If he hadn't been the one to scream though... who had? In the limited light of his fox lanterns, the thought didn't hit home.

With the sudden loss of the light however, Tavi pressing closer to her in the darkness, the dragon began to vibrate with a growl deep within her chest. Nothing met them in the darkness, but that didn't relax her in the slightest. Something was out there. The warnings from the map had made that obvious. Whatever this place protected against. It came to little surprise when the sounds of an animal began to emanate from the darkness. The vibrating growl began vocal, trying to urge Tavi back away from whatever lurked in the darkness. Not that it was dark for much longer. Their maps saw to that.

The shift in lighting blurred her vision and made her squeeze her eyes shut. Just in time to lose the precious moments that the creature took to lumber towards them. And knock her clean off her feet in his swipe. Her pride hurt more than her body, she pushed herself into a crouch. Tavi's enthusiastic cheer was met with a less than friendly smile. No real part of the dragon felt he was ready for a brute like this. She was really going to have some words with the professor after all this.

"Yes, let's," she snarled, lifting one hand. Ink pooled beneath her claws, burning the flesh as the ink took on acidic properties. The substance stretched into a whip, and keep mind of where Tavi was against the dripping whip, lashed out at the large creature, aiming for one of its limbs to try and drag it down.

The sooner they took it out, the sooner she could stop worrying about Tavi. Sooner they could be out of there.

FEAR:
Burning Ink Offensive, Gambler's Chance.
With the ability to manipulate ink comes an ability to alter its properties for a short period of time. Agsil especially is able to push ink from her body out into the air--from under her nails, out of her wing claws, or out of cuts received in fights--in the shape of a long whip. It is around a half inch in diameter--on average, it shifts around a good bit--and about five feet in length. Anything the ink touches will feel an acid burning sensation from the new properties she's given the ink. A warning to any near her: the whip drips. And tends to splatter as she's whirling it around. Agsil must be careful as well with her whip. She's not immune to the burning, and this does include the sections of her skin from which the ink is coming from....

In favor of testing himself the kitsune ignored the less than friendly smile the ghoul flashed. Much like with his brothers he could tell when someone didn't find him up to the challenge, which made him only want to prove them wrong more. With a new boost of confidence he skidded between the beast legs and jumped up, delivering a kick to its back before scampering off to avoid a swipe.

"Nnft," He growled softly as the end of the beast claws swiped his leg, ripping his long socks and ruining them. Stupid thing, it was really going to pay now. Ears laid flat to his head he glanced to Agsil not wanting to get in her way or vice versa before he attacked again.

To say she was disgruntled by how relatively little her acidic ink seemed to do against the creature would be... well. About as much of an understatement as it was to say she felt unnerved by seeing Tavi actually fighting against the thing. Her heart was in her throat, and she moved from her crouch as quickly as possible. Kicking herself into the air, she thought for a moment the brute might notice her.

At least, it seemed for the moment to go after Tavi, allowing her the chance to swoop in and land a good strike with her fists to the creature's head. But a large fist came backwards. Knocking into her, Agsil managed to at least remain in the air. Despite being thrown back a good ways. The thing was... annoyingly strong.

After Agsil went in he was careful to watch out for her ink before going in for another attack. The monster was strong of that was certain, as he rounded to try for a punch the kitsune was knocked back by a massive hand and left heaving for air. Growling Tavi quickly picked himself up and went back in, this time much more determined to hit the lava eyed fiend.

On a crackle of electric he leaped up hit the monster than latched around the it to promptly bit its ear before being swiped off. A two for one combo that seemed to have the monster crying out in pain. Tavi beamed at its wails, getting all the more fired up.
