Lately me and my husband have been playing JRPGs. We finished Last Story and are on Xenoblade, and neither lived up to the hype. I'm curious: What game has both good animation and a good story? The recent games we played have either one or the other. I'd really like to play a good game again, so let me know which ones are worth buying. I like all Zelda games. I like Fire Emblem. I like Harvest Moon. XD We only have Nintendo systems (SNES, 64, DS, and Wii), but we can play GCN games with the Wii's backward compatibility (and GBA games with the DS, if I'm making a complete list).
Someone told me Golden Sun and Tales of Symphonia are good. What do you think?

It will be hard to find a new release that can really impact you.
But I play a huge variety of games across consoles, so I can try to give you some ideas. One of my best friends practically only has a Wii.
His suggestions for me were:
Quote:
Etrian Odyssey Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door Muramasa: The Demon Blade Pandora's Tower Okami
I only have Zelda games for my Wii, and I think something else, though my Console discs are in the great room right now and I have no intention of waking the dog. I haven't been able to game for about two years now, so I've been trying to get myself back into it by playing Final Fantasy IX FINALLY, and doing a more in-depth play-through of Fallout: New Vegas on an Intelligence/Speech character.
After FFIX I'll be going back through Dark Souls, since I now have Prepare to Die Edition... emotion_dowant
Also, since you're a big Zelda fan, how can I trudge through Skyward Sword? emotion_eyebrow Story is great and interesting and WOW is the game beautiful, but man...
After learning that I had to go back through all the maps, plus extra maps, just to get the sacred flames and the "items" to go with them, I am just too bored to do it.
EDIT: Add a "both" option to your poll? emotion_kirakira I love Fallout and several Western RPGs, but I also love JRPGs, so choosing neither seems too harsh... emotion_sweatdrop
Oh, and Tales of Symphonia is honestly the only Tales I actually like. Vesperia is a total disappointment (not to mention extremely cliché and predictable.) I finally have Abyss now (for the 3DS) so if I like it, I'll relay my opinion to you. The friend who gave me that list (it's bigger but those are the Nintendo titles,) was a big fan of Abyss, so we'll see... And if you get Symphonia and like it, don't get Dawn of the New World. Just pretend it doesn't exist, please.
And finally, if you like Harvest Moon, try out Rune Factory. I have the first one for the DS, but I have yet to actually, really play it. I bought it when my depression hiatus kicked in... gonk This is why my Pokémon Black game is collecting dust...I don't even have Reshiram yet and I'm AT that part...

We've been considering Okami, but I didn't want to get it because a lot of times people say "THIS IS A GREAT GAME!!" (like Xenoblade) and then the funnest part of the game for me is making fun of the characters and story. stressed I think we'll end up getting it, though.
Have you seen the Final Fantasy XIV trailer? That thing gave me chills... if I had a good computer I'd totally buy it. There's a lot of things I'd do if I had a good computer. rofl
I never played Skyward Sword much. I watched my husband beat it. Those silent realm things gave me a heart attack and I wasn't even the one playing. gonk The story is fantastic, though. You should definitely play it through at least once. The end battle? One of the best in video game history, imo. It was epic.
And I changed the poll for you. 3nodding
Thanks for the heads up on Tales of Symphonia, I think we're gonna check that one out next. I hate it when sequels suck. emo

Which is funny, because that same friend loves Xenoblade. sweatdrop But I usually take his word for most things, as we seem to agree more often than not.
Not a fan of any of the new Final Fantasies. Everything after 10 is now just a big joke to me. I know a lot of people say the same thing, but really they just...stopped having good ideas. Probably because they're trying to one-up 7, 8, and 9, but they just can't. I guess 4 was good too, but I haven't played it.
I accidentally jumped off a log and into the water. rofl My heart skipped a beat and poor Link was dashing until he couldn't dash no more. As for the final battle, I have seen the boss. He looks like a straight badass. So did Phantom Ganon and TP final boss Ganon, but you know...nice change of pace, especially since his flaming lacky is so hard to take seriously.
...Which reminds me, did you play Wind Waker? When you learn the truth about Hyrule and such, it was like a waterfall of feels. It's saying something when you actually get feels for Ganondorf.
Yay ~
Awesome! Symphonia really is good, but just...that sequel. It doesn't exist, okay? emotion_sweatdrop

I've never really played FF either (except for Crystal Chronicles--and that sucked). I like Kingdom Hearts, though. Unfortunately the games aren't all for Nintendo. emo
XD Girahim... what were they thinking? My brother loves him, though. lol Yeah, TP Ganon was AMAZING. It took me forever to beat the part when he was on a horse, though. emotion_donotwant Zelda wouldn't shoot! But it was cool to fight with her. I was so sad when she was possessed... I almost couldn't do it because I didn't want to hurt her. sweatdrop Yeah, WINDWAKER. I was like ... emotion_0A0! Dat boat king... Ganondorf wasn't much of a challenge in that one, though. Just... weird. And then he's like "I just wanted to save my people, yo." and you can't really blame him. emotion_facepalm I wasn't very fond of WWs graphics, though. Or sailing for long periods of time.

I have the Symphonia sequel Really need to find Symphonia, since the sequel relies on the player knowing the first game so much cat_stressed
I was told that FFXII was one of their better ones, but I've never played it. IV has a graphics upgrade between original/Advance and iPad releases. V is a grinder. Dawn of Souls...two in one, takes a lot of time. Played a bit of VI, but it wasn't my game so I couldn't get too far in
HM...emotion_kirakira GET ALL THE HANDHELD HM GAMES!! My sister is addicted to the series |D so I'm getting her a used DS lite and a HM in each slot for Christmas
Sengoku BASARA...Japan, release all the frikkin games to the rest of us, please. And the one skill is easier to get with a controller. On Wiimote and nunchuck? A+B+C/Z (can't remember which), and hitting only two of the three uses a different skill :/
Ōkami? The graphics are different from what I generally see for video games, since they're emulating old Japanese drawing techniques. You fight with a mirror and ink, and I'm at a toss up as to if I like it better with Wiimote and nunchuck or an actual controller better, having played it with both
If you're going to play the GBA Golden Suns, get both of them (the DS GS doesn't link to those two) and either a game guide or a Djinn location sheet. You'll want to get every single Djinni, trust me And either borrow or get two GBAs to transfer over after beating the first one, as well as a connector cable. Otherwise it's sixteen pages of code to transfer the data. You don't want that, since it can be easy to screw up
I've never really played FF either (except for Crystal Chronicles--and that sucked). I like Kingdom Hearts, though. Unfortunately the games aren't all for Nintendo. emo

That's unfortunate. Crystal Chronicles brought back some old feels for FF, as well as brought an interesting new aim for dungeon crawling. I also found the story to be rather engaging, so long as you pay attention to each encounter, examine small pieces of the maps, and talk to as many people as you can. That, and it gave me a new challenge with the hometown professions.
This will likely sound like heresy, but I've had it up to here with Kingdom Hearts. It's always the same ending. Enix will milk that game for all it's worth, just as they're doing to Final Fantasy and (attempting) to do with Drakengard, of which they've completely destroyed thanks to that crap Nier game and now Drakengard 3. I loved the first game, but everything after that has been a bit of a trudge for me. I'm on Birth by Sleep, and I have to say that Aqua and Sora are the only two characters in the entire franchise I can actually stand. Kairi needs to jump off the island and onto a rock, and Riku just needs to suck it up already.
You had to be right on the money for Zelda to hit her target. Also, there were some refinements made in the Wii version, which is sadly the only one I have. I remember Midna being pretty hesitant about harming Puppet!Zelda, too. Ugh. The feels in that gameeee. Especially when you learn who the skeletal warrior is. emotion_0A0 As someone who loves Majora's Mask and finds it to be the best game (for me,) that was a harsh reality.
Aw, that's unfortunate. The graphics were fun and a nice change of pace, but I do love darker Zelda settings. Skyward Sword is a mix between TP and WW, as it's both dark, but fun and cell-shaded. But you know, some things never change...
Kitalpha Hart
Well, it is a sequel...and it sucks in comparison. emotion_awesome
> Get Symphonia > Play > ??? > Profit!
7,8, and 9. They were the most drastic in terms of new directions, and the graphics, while older, took far more effort in my opinion. It also really looks like they actually cared about the games. The new ones? Rehashes. There's nothing really interesting about them to me.
I just wish you could substitute the Wiimote with the GC controller for more than just Smash Bros...Ah well. I used to play in a very small space and even with the Wii Motion Plus it just...had such difficulty reading my movements.

some games offer controller controls. SenBasa does. Chocobo's Dungeon does (that is one weird FF game. You're literally the Chocobo. And the frikkin Moogle x.x I wanted to strangle him), as well as a side-Wiimote option And yes, there's a Wii controller. Different setup from the GC, but some games it's worth it I think the Tales one has it, but I'm not sure :/
