As much potential Gaia's comics/story has (well, had) for plot, I'm surprised there's not a whole lot of Gaia-themed roleplays. Are people just not that much interested in the site's story any more, or are fan/vampire/school/[insert chatterbox crap here] roleplays that much more popular? My friend and I run a roleplaying guild centered around the dark elves of Gaia and we're trying to figure out why long-term roleplayers are about as numerous as unicorns these days.
If you've had any good experiences/stories with roleplays that use Gaia as a setting, share 'em here 3nodding
Stories about roleplaying in general are fine too.

Yeah, I haven't really RP'd much in the past but I'd think there'd be more Gaia themed stuff. The only thing I've done really I guess is set up my journal as the Kiki Chronicles where I tell stories about me and my Kiki, Coco, Grunny, Prunny, etc. Even my house is the "Kiki Chronicles Headquarters" lol. I haven't updated in a while though. I was putting little avatar images and stuff and editing them for every entry but I haven't felt very inspired lately. I might just start writing entries that parody my real life with the characters sort of resembling my kids and hubby and stuff, lol. Too lazy to add any images. So I guess I have a Gaia persona I just don't use it really.

Well hey, that was a pretty neat thing.
There used to be a pretty big segment of the GCD who'd at least roleplay a little bit of their 'Gaia' selves, especially in 2008 or 2009. But now they're gone, or at least hiding in guilds.

Yeah, I haven't seen the RP forum lately but I know looking at the other forums it feels like they don't exactly have a lot of life in them. I used to frequent the writing forums for a while and now it's like... that place is so dead that threads won't fall off the first page for weeks. The poetry/arena subforums are even worse.

I've hardly bothered with Barton Town ever. Too much emphasis on post styles, stolen photobucket pictures, and too many Mary Sues and Gary Stus to make searching for even a crumb of good RP worthwhile. One of my guildmates still posts on the public RP forums, but only for fandom stuff.
Another guildmate has done a lot of tabletop/dice roleplaying both on Gaia and IRL, and his RP character in the guild is based on a story built over his roleplaying experience on Gaia. Normally it'd be questionable but it works out better than expected.

The problem with Gaia's "story" is that it's too "real life" for Roleplay. Except for romantic stuff, most role plays have people going on some kind of adventure, almost like playing an MMORPG but with words. The stuff Gaia gives us only goes so far, especially with this ridiculously slow build. How many items is poor Reapersun being forced to design for the CIs that she can't get time to work on the manga!?
I remember back during the Frontier Skies arc, my guild had this awesome role-play going on based on the Air-ship theme but there was only so much we could do before it stagnated.
I also remember back in zOMG's glory days, there were some RP clans based around fighting the Animated Invasion like The Barton Regulars, but when zOMG died, so did they.
I have never been able to find a Gaia RP, and trying to get involved in good RPs now is hard. I can only work with one on ones now because of all of the people who don't know how to create balanced characters.
Although I think it would be fun to throw a Perpetual Party in the Gaiaverse. Where anyone can join, but speeches are given about something (maybe a guild thing) but everyone parties until a plot is actually formed. That's normally when the name changes and becomes a long term RP.
If you guys wanted to do a Gaia-themed RP thread in the guild I'm sure that would be fine. Somebody wanted to do an event where we do some RPing and stuff so I'll see about suggesting ideas at the next planning meeting. If you have any ideas for things you guys want to do, don't be afraid to suggest it to the crew. We are all very receptive to ideas, or more like we love getting ideas. heart

Then what you do is supplement it with original content that could plausibly fit within the universe. Remember that Gaia has been depicted as a huge planet in the storyline, not just the four towns and the zOMG locales. There's also floating islands and the like. It takes some worldbuilding and a lot of people hate it, but some people love constructing things and see that it's worth the effort. You could even take locations and characters from item descriptions and RIGs if you're that out of material.

Dark Elf RP guild?
Well, yeah. The guild I'm in (linked with sig banner) was formed in 2009, around the Kuros' plot involvement. Quite a few people hopped on the bandwagon for the event plots and left a while afterward, but there's still some of us hangin' around. We're about to do a major rewrite and create a new starting point, which is the best time for anybody wanting to hop in. The premise is that there are branches of the Kuro mafia, some of them on the surface. Their job is to protect dark elf interests, though lately their connection's been cut off.

Your spoiler'd idea sounds pretty great for a casual permanent RP.

Absolutely, have an idea from me, or at least something to get people's gears turning: There could be a roleplay in which a barrage of problems have been plaguing the different towns and the RG Task Force (placeholder name lol) helps out the shopkeepers and other NPCs while they try to find the root cause.
I see, well I will let the other crew know you are interested in maybe doing something. At least if they don't see this thread themselves which they probably will. heart

The problem is Gaia gives us so little that with the effort it takes to flesh out the rest of the world with regions, cities, race/species abilities and limitations, etc, etc, you might as well create your own RP world from scratch which is what people end up doing.
If role plays were like novels, Gaia's "story" could barely be called an out-line much less a rough draft.
I'm interested in RPs that are set in the Gaia world, provided I can introduce an original character or two, with parts of their histories in non-Gaian locations, since they are not natives of Gaia. They traveled to the land of Gaia from other places. (One of them has an OOC journal entry right on my profile page.)
I am in two guilds in which the owner and friends set up the guild to accommodate a variety of character situations, including mine, but unfortunately, the stories have died due to guild members having a desperate need to give all their attention to their real lives, for the time being. Maybe forever. I was SO disappointed. gonk

If that's really the case then there would be no way in hell the RP I'm in survived four years. Most of the time we use the setting Gaia provides and fill in the details the official plot leaves to our imagination like local politics in Durem and other towns with different racial factions, the role of orcs/imps/centaurs/etc, and a whole other ton of crap. Sometimes we dip into original content, like a plane of floating islands, but this has always been limited to subplots or small parts of main plot threads.
I'm not saying 'follow the Gaia plot verbatim', I'm saying to work with Gaia's setting and extrapolate things from the plot. Like what have the dark elves been doing aside from what we see? There has to be more to it.

I find that to be a recurring thing. Activity peaks in the summer and winter and slows down when college and the like resume. Other times, they lose interest but don't want to admit it.

"I've only ever found two places that RPed seriously in the Gaia universe, and sadly to say they both puttered out rather quick. There just wasn't much to go on really. I've stuck mostly to the forums once the guilds started to get forgotten, and I've found a few good ones from time to time, but again, mostly puttered out from lack of people posting. Keeping interest in players seems to be the hard part."
