On the Eastern Fringe of the galaxy, a new power is rising. The Tau seek to bring enlightenment to a barbaric era, and any who refuse to join their unified cause are swiftly shown the error of their ways. Led by their mysterious Ethereal caste, the Tau are confident and ambitious. With advanced weaponry and an understanding of the art of warfare, world after world has fallen to the Tau Empire. The very stars themselves will be reforged in the cause of the Greater Good.

This 104 page hardcover book includes: the story of how the Tau united to begin their expansion across the galaxy; a description of, and rules for, the deadly warriors of the Fire caste, the alien auxiliaries that support them, as well as sophisticated weapons and sleek vehicles of the Tau; a showcase of fantastically painted Tau Empire Citadel miniatures, with various colour schemes and insignia of different septs; and a comprehensive army list that allows you to organise your Tau Empire miniatures on the tabletop.

XV104 Riptide is the pinnacle of the Earth caste's battlesuit development. It stands twice as tall as the XV8 Crisis suit, but its movements are more like those of its smaller cousins than the mechanical stiffness displayed by Imperial walkers with their crude servo-motors.

The XV104 Riptide takes the evolution of the Tau battlesuit to a whole new level. First and foremost the model is huge, towering over the rest of the Tau - even other battlesuits and tanks. Sleek and elegant armour panels, along with bolts and grills, cover its body. Despite its enormous size, with ball and socket joints it remains a manoeuvrable model whose arms and legs can be posed in a variety of different ways. Either standing tall or even kneeling down, you can use it as a unique, dynamic centrepiece for your Tau army. As well as three variant heads it comes with a range of weapons options including a heavy burst cannon, twin-linked smart missile systems, fusion blaster and Riptide shield generator. If that wasn't enough, the kit also comes with two Shielded Missile Drones.

This multi-part plastic kit contains 108 components and a Tau transfer sheet with which to make a XV104 Riptide Battlesuit and two Shielded Missile Drones.

The Sun Shark Bomber is a sleek atmospheric aircraft that is capable of sweeping down from the skies and blasting ground targets with its potent payload. Built along a design pattern modified from this aircraft, the Razorshark Strike Fighter forgoes an Interceptor Drone in favour of additional manoeuvring thrusters, and it trades the pulse bomb generator for a fearsome quad ion turret.

The Sun Shark Bomber kit, which can also be used to make Razorshark Strike Fighter, shows the elegant design of the Tau in all its glory. Its front wingtips are tilted downwards, as are its stabilisers, and these are connected in a way that frames either a quad ion turret or a pulse bomb generator. Details include Air caste insignia sculpted onto the top of the model, and an array of metal panels, grills and two engines positioned either side of the nose. There are also additional detail such as lights and an aerial. Other weapons options include a twin-linked ion rifle, burst cannon, missile pod, networked markerlight, seeker missiles, as well as two Interceptor Drones that are docked within the wings, but which can be disconnected.

This multi-part plastic kit contains 51 components and a Tau transfer sheet with which to make either a Sun Shark Bomber or a Razorshark Strike Fighter.

Designed to offer long-range support, the XV88 Broadside Battlesuit has exceeded expectations, becoming a mainstay of the Hunter Cadres and tank-killers of legendary proportions. Powered by a particle accelerator, a Broadside's heavy rail rifle shot can penetrate the thickest plasteel bunkers.

With robust armouring, manoeuvrability and a stack of weapons within the box, the XV88 Broadside Battlesuit provides the Tau collector with a number of options. The kit brings a fresh twist to the line of Tau battlesuits - they're noticeably denser models with a great presence in a collection of miniatures. Each one features a particle accelerator on the back. The standard weapon is for the long and immensely powerful-looking twin-linked rail rifle, though they can be outfitted with eye-wateringly potent and somewhat fist-like twin-linked high yield missile system pods. If that wasn't enough, then you can also use the twin-linked smart missile - enough to please any Tau weapons connoisseur. The kit comes with a Shield Drone and Missile Drone.

This multi-part plastic kit contains 91 components and a Tau transfer sheet with which to make a Broadside Battlesuit and two Drones.

Light reconnaissance units, Pathfinder Teams are the eyes and ears of their Commander in a way no drone can yet emulate. A Pathfinder's foremost role is not to engage the enemy, but instead to operate ahead of their comrades, close to their foe, to accurately scout the enemy.

There are 10 Pathfinders in this kit, and they can be built in a variety of ways - there are different leg options, for kneeling, crouching or standing, as well as different head options. They sport lighter recon armour, which covers their torso, shoulders, knees and elbows, and they wear the similar long, elegant helmets to Fire Warriors. They can carry a selection of weapons including pulse carbines, rail rifle, and ion rifles. The kit includes an enormous Recon Drone, which can be mounted on a Devilfish tank (not included), and which comes armed with a burst cannon. The box set also features a Pulse Accelerator Drone, with a four-pronged device underneath the circular disc, and the Grav-inhibitor Drone that features an orb underneath.

This multi-part plastic kit contains 137 components with which to make 10 Tau Pathfinders, a Pulse Accelerator Drone, a Grav-inhibitor Drone and a Recon Drone.

Fireblades are the most grizzled and seasoned Fire Warriors of their cadre, whose skill at the Fire Warrior's art leads them to eschew battlesuit technology. They are excellent field leaders and their long experience has taught them exactly where to place shots to maximise damage.

The Cadre Fireblade model brings an extra dynamism and level of detail to a Tau collection. The figure is incredibly elaborate, with unique fine-panelled combat armour bearing Tau symbols. With a triumphant expression, in one hand it holds aloft a large bonding knife while in the other it grips a pulse rifle with marker light. Standing on a sculpted base displaying ruined architecture, it wears a long flowing cloak and has long hair that is bound by several clasps in a pony tail.

This plastic kit contains 9 components, one of which is a sculpted base, with which to make Cadre Fireblade.

There is no figure in Tau history as divisive as Commander O'Shovah. The most famous warrior of Vior'la, Farsight's greatest victories were against the Orks on the oxide-desserts of Arkunahsa. It was his tactical brilliance that earned O'Shovah his famous title 'Farsight'.

This exceptionally detailed Commander Farsight model comes in an extremely dynamic pose. Wearing a Crisis battlesuit and armed with a plasma rifle, he stands with one leg raised, his circular shield generator lifted on his left arm, and with his Dawn Blade out to his right. There are flowing strips of material on his thigh and back from the Dawn Blade to add to the sense of rapid movement. Though he bears the symbol of the Fire caste on his armour, he bears his own insignia on his shield generator, crisp in the detail of Citadel Finecast.

This finely detailed resin kit contains 14 components with which to make Commander Farsight.

A Commander, or in the language of the Tau, a 'shas'o', is the highest rank a Fire Warrior can obtain. It is a position of great honour. Tau Commanders prefer to lead from the front, pushing their XV8 Crisis Battlesuits to their fullest.

The XV8 Battlesuit Commander is sculpted in an energetic, heroic pose. It features similar iconic armour panelling to the Crisis Battlesuit, but has some notable differences. The Battlesuit Commander's hands are unsheathed from his armour, thus displaying his rank. The model also comes with a large, strapped bonding knife, which is attached to the armour on its thigh. It comes with a large amount of options, allowing you to personalise your miniature, including a plasma rifle and a cyclic ion blaster.

This finely detailed resin kit contains 22 components with which to make a XV8 Battlesuit Commander.

Although all of the Fire caste regard Darkstrider as a cunning tactician and a warrior to be reckoned with, his unconventional methods and disregard for proper protocol have stirred up much trouble and made many internal enemies.

This finely detailed Darkstrider model comes standing on a sculpted base, portraying alien ruins. He wears lighter recon armour that covers his torso, shoulders and forearms. He carries a pulse carbine and exotic Tau items such as blacksun filter and structural analyser. With a fearsome expression on his face, his long hair is tied back, and he is a unique addition to a Tau Empire collection.

This finely detailed resin kit contains 4 components with which to make Darkstrider.

Master Gunship pilot Shas'la T'au Sha'ng, now better known as Longstrike, has quickly become the Fire caste's most heralded tank ace. Since his first training session, he exhibited an almost innate ability to handle a Hammerhead. Due to his unerring aim, Longstrike was chosen to trial the new XV02 pilot battlesuit.

Longstrike's unusual battlesuit is styled in the same manner as other Tau battlesuits, albeit in a more compact scale. He is covered head to foot in elegant armour panels. A control panel sits on his forearm and he is posed gesturing into the distance. Longstrike would make an excellent addition to a Hammerhead gunship - and he fits neatly inside the vehicle's hatch, making him a unique addition to your Tau Empire collection. Please note: the Hammerhead Gunship is for illustration purposes and must be bought separately (and you probably should, because it's an exceptionally nice Tau model).

This finely detailed resin kit contains 3 components with which to make Longstrike.

I'm actually surprised that it took them so long to make this kind of rails - since many years back i saw many conversions for old broadsides to look likt this new one.

I dunno where i find this kind of money, but atm i'm planning on buying Riptide, one broadside and maybe Fireblade hero. Also Pathfinders looks nice, co possibly i consider them too..

To be honest, neither do I. But I'll find a way.

Planned additions to my aging army:
Get Riptide
Upgrade older XV88 with newer models, Shas'vre Battlesuit commander will still use the XV88-2 configuration
Upgrade Shas'el Na'cha with the newer command style XV8, perhaps a promotion is in order XD

While I'm not particularly a fan of the pose for the XV8 Shas'o, that's why the normal Broadsides are on ball joints. Posing power!

As for the rest, I can dig it. I love the missilefists on the 88, no matter how corny they may be. I'll have to scoop up the book when it drops.

Eh, standing by my old rule of thumb: Wait till it officially hits, then rack 'em up against the old standbys. For all we know, the Tau just got screwed right over.

...Of course this has to happen right in the middle of a Learning League at my LGS. Welp.

well, codex comes out today; going to the hobby shop shortly to get it. Sadly, I was told my hobby shop is getting screwed over on the new models; going to be nearly a dozen people unhappy that they're not getting the Riptide or anything new today except for pathfinders
PostPosted: Sat Apr 06, 2013 9:45 am
I've had a chance to look over the new codex, and Tau certainly didn't get the short end of the stick, among other things, all battlesuits can get Interceptor and/or skyfire, and all models (except Kroot and Vespids) within 6" of a unit being charged can Overwatch as if they were the ones being charged.

imo there are a lot of delicious new systems and wargear for battlesuits. The overcharge function for Ion weapons is nothing to scoff at either. But still... Making Broadside Railgun Hv. Rail Rifles with S8 is really, really a drill to the butt.. Why not just take away the option for them to have skyfire or interceptor when they take the Hv Rail Rifles..?
