So Cymbeline had come back, bringing familiar plants back to the Clans, a small bit of home to try to make things feel right. Plants that went their own way, Famine plants back to where those from Famine dwelt, Death plants...well, ones that Death harvested elsewhere as naught grew on their Isle, back to those from Death. But there were some plants just scattered here and there. New ones, old ones, some as big as your head.

These unknown plants (the majority really) were the ones that Soren was most interested in. Weird little shrubs, a variety of flowers, tall grasses...they all intrigued him, but he could make head nor tails of them. There had to be knowledge about them somewhere, probably in the books that Astridr had owned or borrowed, and he found himself wishing that he had read more of those. Instead he had read about tactics, about Fear, about things that he deemed useful. Now he desperately wanted the knowledge he had passed up. How was he to create a garden, or raise any plants, if he did not understand their purpose? Did not know which were poisonous or what effect they each had.

Though really, it probably looked strange to anyone that could see him. A lone guardian just standing and staring at plants with a light frown on his face. and then staring some more, as if somehow they were all just going to come alive and talk to him.

The colony had often counted on its members lacking the ambition to rise higher than their assigned stations. Without soldiers who were content to continue soldiering for the span of their existence, Famine might have become choked with alchemists and sages, leaving their numbers brainy but unprotected. Since the decimation of his homeland, Mmur had continued doing what he did best, training and putting himself through exercises that honed his skills as a fighter. It had taken him quite a while to see that his efforts would not fulfill him completely, not in this new life.

No longer was he simply a cog in the machine. If he chose, he could be a fighter and a woodcarver, a cave explorer, a musician. He could dance and build houses and grow things, but only if he first learned how. Mmur perched on a low branch of the unimpressive tree he had just taught himself how to climb—rather poorly, if his scratched forearms and calves were any indication—and peered at the Death horseman nearby. Perhaps this would be the one to teach him the first of many new things. He hopped from his branch, dropping the short distance back to the ground, and hurried over to Soren's side, tugging his horned helm up off of his glowing eyes.

"Are they for medicine or for eating? Or killing? Do you think? He squinted. "I could find out." There had to be a pumpkin patch around here somewhere. He could just... eat all the plants and see which ones killed him! It sounded like a grand way to spend a couple of hours.

Not everyone could be a soldier. It was a good enough life, but when he had been offered a different position, the chance to move up and be a personal guardian to a priestess, a childhood...friend? he had taken it willingly. But that life was not a bad one, at least not in Death. Here though...here he was a guardian with no one to guard. A role but not a purpose. He helped here and there, did the heavy lifting, the miscellaneous tasks. But there was nothing to make the tasks that he did special. Any one (or two) horsemen could do what he did.

But as a fighter...really he was not the most skilled. He did what needed to be done and that was it. He could take a hit, he could guard someone else, that he was good at. Hunting was also fun, but it was not a skill he practiced in excess. But...well he was the type that was still surprised when horsemen appeared out of no where, not that he would really admit it other than his eyebrows raising a fair amount.

He glanced back toward the plants as the other spoke, mentally placing him as Famine by his dress. His shoulders shrugged, unsure of what exactly they were or what they were for. "...How would you find out?" he questioned after a moment of hesitation. "If medicine...you'd need to be sick to know. If poisonous..." his words trailed off, his deep, gruff voice more than willing to rest.

Mmur's face fell as he realized that this Guardian was correct. He wasn't sick or severely injured, so there wouldn't really be any way for him to tell if the plants were medicinal. Though he still had no problem with the whole poison thing, he decided against that too. Voluntarily killing oneself so soon after meeting a new horseman would probably come across as a little weird.

"I suppose you're right. I only have these scratches, and they hardly need healing. And who would eat poisonous plants, right?" He let out a gloriously knowing chuckle that was so transparently fake it was kind of painful. Out of all of the hobbies Mmur had been considering picking up, it was clear he should stay far away from acting.

"We could pick some and put them into little bundles and bring them to an alchemist? If we find something they've never seen, they might even let us name them!" He cleared his throat and sank back down to the flats of his feet from where he had bounced up onto his toes at some point.

A little weird indeed, just like his laugh. Soren glanced at him in concern. Maybe...there were others in the Clans that seemed...affected. Not quite right in the head. They generally had golden eyes of some sort, and this one did not appear to be so afflicted, but maybe he was the odd one out. Definitely someone to keep his eye on.

But his ideas about the bundles of plants was actually a rather good one. Soren had done a task for alchemists before, testing potions out on students, and perhaps they could help him now. But Mmur's enthusiasm was not quite infectious. "Yes," Soren stated simply, crouching down in front of a plant. "What would you name it?" As he spoke he reached out, grabbing a plant, not really worried about bruising the leaves or harming the plant, fist closing around it and jerking it out of the ground.

Well, most of it. The plant's roots stayed firmly planted in the ground, and the stalk was a jagged mess as Soren set it down beside him and began pulling up the next plant in his reach.
