I'm doing a persuasive essay on sex education, and in america it's often taught in sixth grade and eighth grade, then that's it. Oftentimes, it's not taught at all. I'm a firm believer in sex education being taught since fourth grade or under in a consistant rather than spurt-ish way. Factual information as well, not that moral/abstinence crap that should be up to families to add.

So I was wondering.

At what age do they start teaching sex education in schools over there?

I think I first got sex education in year 5, so when I was about 11.

It's interesting, though. Apparently a nationwide survey transpired that 80% of young people elieve that the sex education they recieve in schools is insufficient.

On top of that, Britain has the fastest growing rate of STDs in Europe.

At the moment, there is a debate as to when sex education should be taught and also how much of a role the parents should play in it's education.

Francis, try to keep this thread clean... rolleyes

I think sex education is a bit one-sided. Very biological, and nothing (or almost nothing, in my experience) about emotions, babies and whatever else.

Though, I went to a Catholic school. Maybe it was different.

I dimly recall a sex education back at primary school too though.

On a slightly different note: I know people who were taught in depth about oral sex technique at their school. Am I the only one who missed out on that curriculum?

We did a bit of that when we were told to get into twos and go and search for information on sex on the internet and then do little talks on what we found out. rofl
We watched a lot of videos about emotians as well. Planty of chavs pushing prams and carrying shopping bags in that.
Oh and then there was a video about a guy who two timed his girlfriend and then had to tell his girlfriend he had caught and SDI. There was someone in my class with the same name. He'll never hear the end of that.

The most concentrated sex ed was in primary school though. Porn cartoons. xd Anyone get them?

We got those biggrin

And the general theme of those videos sounds familiar. I rather miss those poorly acted sub-channel 4 type dramas we used to get in PSE.

Oh, and Francis - who exactly would these people be? gonk

We just got a poster, some labelled diagrams on the chalkboard and a few OHP sheets. I seem to recall a video, but no chavs.
And Whapcapn, you don't need to know. Haha. ;-D

Cartoon porn? Oral sex technique? Americans are being jipped here.

All we ever seem to talk about is STDs, how abstinence is the only true protection, and statistics of how effective each method of birth control is.

We talked about emotions and that all the time. But i believe that should be up to the person and the family. (If someone wants to have a strictly sexual relationship with someone else and they're totally ready, so be it if they go about it in a responsible way and both partners get tested first. Emotions don't have to be involved. As long as it's a healthy relationship, those are optional and often come about naturally.)

sex education should be taught consistantly from age 9 and up.

Questionable statistics, right? Like:

OMG U SHUD NEVAR HAF SEX BCOS LUK
CONDOM - 1%
COMBINED PILL - 2%
MINI-PILL - 0%
(PS THE PILLS GIF U CANCAR)
UTD/UTI - 3%
(PS THE PILLS & UTD/UTI KIL UR BAYBEEZ)
RHYTHM METHOD - 99%
ABSTINENCE - 100%

I mean, fair enough abstinence is the most effective form of birth control, but telling people that doesn't make them abstain, and telling them that other methods are useless just makes them not use them when they do have sex.

I remember we had a sex and puberty education film that was made by Disney. The main characters were about the age of eight. eek

I don't think I've ever had abstinance mentioned.

I live in America and I was first taught sex-ed at the age of 10.

I've read many times that the earlier a kid is taught about sex, the less promiscuous they will be when they are older. I think thats bull because learning or not learning something at an early age doesn't affect how someone's personality is.

I know that this is a little off the main topic, but the reason why there is so many "younger people" (like teens, early twenties) having sex in general and before they're married, is because that is technically thats when most people in history would be getting married. It's only been the past 50 years or so that the marriage age keeps getting pushed back.

I went to a Catholic HS and there they always said "You can't have sex until marriage! You can't use birth-control either because you are preventing a life! And then when you are married, you can only have sex a few times a year! Etc etc etc..."

I really don't know how someone could possibly not have sex till they are 35, and then only have it once every other month. My teachers must have been prudes to the extreme.

Yea, I got very little sex education. It was basically the same stuff I just stated above.

That's how it was at my school. All they taught was what body part needed to where, and that's how you get a baby. rolleyes

Sex education is a lot more than just biology. There's a whole emotional thing behind it whether it's about complete love or just pleasure.

eek I don't know anyone who was taught about oral sex...Everything I learned about it was from really racy fanfics or romance novels. xd

Hm. Well, I live in America. They taught us Sex Ed from Grade 5 to Grade 9 and I guess have decided that after that we're on our own. Except little pamphlets in the Nurse's office. Really, Now all they talk about is drugs and alcohol...

Last year (Grade 9) was really the only time they talked about Emotions. How girls give sex for love and guys give love for sex. They told us about Pregnancy, Abortion, Adoption and Teen Parenting. Rape, Sex, a**l Sex, Oral Sex.... STD's (Actually showed a video about STD's and what they look like. It was SO gross. >.< ) But most of the Sex Ed was about Emotions. Because most people already know everything else.

They don't tell us that Abstinence is the only way to go. It's just the most effective against STD's and Pregnancy. xD Obviously.

Anyways.

Wow. You has more education on this topic than anyone else I know.

My school had way to many abstinence speakeres and not enough sex-ed.

I know people who I could swear, have no idea what sex is. sweatdrop
