Care of Magical Creatures

User Image
When you arrive to the classroom, you recognize the the Hufflepuff Head standing in front. Except... She's a little more dirty... And seems to have been experimenting with her hair. She welcomes you with an introduction, "As you probably know, I am Professor Amber Moonshade. This is my first year teaching, but I was lucky enough to have been personally trained by the previous instructor, Professor Cara Mill." She waves at you to sit down. "Also, the first few lessons will take place in the classroom, but when we start working with the creatures, we will meet by the hut next to the Forbidden Forest."

Nifflers
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

As you walk to class you see a cage with about ten fluffy black creatures with long snouts inside. You can tell they are uncomfortable, but they are also jumping around excited and seem to be trying to dig out. When everyone has arrived, Professor Moonshade clears her throat in an attempt to draw your attention away from the strange creatures. With a smile, she begins the lesson, "Hello everyone! For today's lesson, I've decided we should do something fun! The creatures you see in the cage are called Nifflers. Nifflers, which are British beasts, are XXX rated creatures that love anything glittery. Goblins often keep these creatures to burrow down in to the earth for treasure. The Niffler is gentle and even affectionate but should never be kept in a house. This is because they can reek destruction on belongings in search for glittery objects. Nifflers live in lairs up to twenty feet underground and they produce six to eight young in a litter." She pauses, looks at her students, and says, "Now for the fun part! Today, each one of you will pick a niffler and take it to that area of dirt," she points to an area of ground where the dirt has obviously been dug up and replaced. You will put the niffler down and it will burrow in to the ground, where I have leprechaun made gold coins buried. When your niffler brings it's coins back, count them up! The person whose niffler digs up the most coins will get 5 extra credit points for their house, so pick wisely! Also everyone who completes this classwork will get 5 points, meaning the winner gets 10 points total. Good luck!"

((Number of coins are determined by rolling two 10-sided dice. The total is how many coins your niffler dug up.))

CoMC II

The Sphinx

You arrive at class to see a board with two pictures pinned up. One of a very famous Egyptian statue, and the other of a creature that can only be described as a human head on a lion's body.

Professor Moonshade begins her lesson right away. "Today we will learn about the Sphinx," she says, gesturing to the board. "Sphinxes are Egyptian creatures with the head of a human, and the body of a lion. For over a thousand years witches and wizards have used them to guard valuables and hideaways. This," she points at the picture of the statue, "was probably build by ancient Egyptian witches and wizards as a symbol of just that. Or perhaps as a warning to what was waiting for any who dared to penetrate its secrets." She pauses for dramatic effect, then continues. "The Sphinx is highly intelligent and loves to tell puzzles and riddles. They are usually only dangerous when what they are guarding is threatened. The Shpinx is rated XXXX and despite their high intelligence have been put in the Beast division because of their violent nature." She now hands out a paper with the following riddles:

The more you have of it, the less you see. What is it?

You heard me before, yet you hear me again. Then I die, 'til you call me again. What am I?

I am the beginning of the end, and the end of time and space. I am essential to creation, and I surround every place. What am I?

I never was, am always to be. No one ever saw me, nor ever will. And yet I am the confidence of all, To live and breath on this terrestrial ball. What am I?

At night they come without being fetched. By day they are lost without being stolen. What are they?

I give you a group of three. One is sitting down, and will never get up. The second eats as much as is given to him, yet is always hungry. The third goes away and never returns.

"Because we can't bring an real Sphinx here, I have provided these riddles instead. Your classwork is to solve three of them, no more or less. It will be worth 5 points!"

((You may post your answers in the classroom. Also, PLEASE don't cheat. Thanks. C: ))

"Dragons," Professor Moonshade says to begin class, "are probably the most feared, famous, and difficult to hide of magical creatures. They are also what we will be studying for the next few lessons. We will study all ten breeds: the Antipodean Opaleye, Chinese Fireball, Common Welsh Green, Hebridean Black, Hungarian Horntail, Norwegian Ridgeback, Peruvian Vipertooth, Romanian Longhorn, Swedish Short-Snout, and Ukrainian Ironbelly." she tells you, counting them off on her fingers as she goes. "But for this lesson, let's keep it simple and just learn the basics of dragons. First off, dragon eggs are Class A Non-Tradable goods, in other words, don't expect to get one any time soon! Secondly, female dragons are much larger and more aggressive than males. Almost anything on a dragon has magical properties, mainly though, their hide, blood, heart, liver, and horn. Dragons do occasionally interbreed, but hybrids are very rare. Oh, and I forgot to mention; Dragons are rated at XXXXX, so don't expect for me be bringing one in." She laughs then writes the classwork on the board: Please write a paragraph (at least five sentences) on your opinion of dragons. Please include which dragon(s) you know the most about and which you would like to know about. Worth 5 points.

The homework is written underneath.

The Antipodean Opaleye, Chinese Fireball, and Common Welsh Green

Professor Moonshade begins the lesson excitedly, “This week we will be learning about three different dragons, the Antepodean Opaleye, the Chinese Fireball, and the Common Green Welsh. The Antepodean Opaleye is native to New Zealand, however when territory is scarce it may migrate to Australia. This medium sized dragon, weighing in between two and three tons, prefers to dwell in valleys instead of mountains as most dragons do. The Opaleye is considered one of the most beautiful dragons, with iridescent, pearly scales and glittering, multi-coloured, pupil-less eyes. This dragon also is not considered very aggressive and rarely kills unless hungry. The flame of the Opaleye is a very vivid scarlet. Its favorite food is sheep; however it also has been known to kill larger animals such as Kangaroos. The pale grey eggs of the Opaleyes are sometimes mistaken for fossils, causing issues for those unwary muggles that find them.

“The Chinese Fireball, sometimes known as the Liondragon, is quite different from the Opaleye. It is scarlet and smooth-scaled, has a fringe of golden spikes around its snub-snouted face, and extremely protuberant eyes. The name comes from the mushroom-shaped flame that shoots from its nose when it is angered. It weighs between two and four tons and the eggs are a vivid crimson speckled with gold. Though the Fireball is aggressive, it is actually more tolerant with its own species than most dragons are. The fireball will eat any mammal; it however prefers pigs and humans.

“Last but not least is the Common Welsh Green. The Welsh Green is the least troublesome of all the dragons. It blends in well with the lush grass of its homeland, though it does however prefer to nest higher in the mountains. It is there that a reservation has been made for its preservation. Like the Opaleye, it prefers to feed on sheep and avoid humans unless provoked. The roar of a Common Welsh Green is easily recognized and surprisingly melodious. The Welsh Green’s eggs are an earthy brown flecked with green,” she finishes with a small breath.
“Now, for your classwork I’d like to please tell me of these three dragons you find the most interesting and why. At least two complete sentences please. It’s worth five points and the homework is on the board.”

Lesson 1:

Professor Moonshade stands in the front of the classroom, welcoming you with a smile. "Hello and welcome to Care of Magical Creatures! I am so very happy to see so many of yous," she said with a giggle. "Now, before we get involved with actually taking care of the magical creatures we so love, we first must learn a few basics about them. So, for this lesson, we will be learning about how the Ministry of Magic classifies each creature." Before continuing on, she hands out a small piece of parchment that contains the following:

Ministry of Magic (M.O.M.) Classification

XXXXX
...................Known wizard killer / impossible to
.............................train or domesticate

XXXX.....................Dangerous / requires specialist
.............................knowledge / skilled wizard may handle

XXX.......................Competent wizard should cope

XX.........................Harmless / May be domesticated

X...........................Boring

"As you see, each creature is rated on how dangerous it is by a number of 'X's. One 'X' being the least dangerous, five 'X's being the most dangerous. These classifications are given to all beasts, beings, and spirits by The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures." She smiles and finishes the lesson by saying, "For your classwork, I'd like you to tell me if you think these at-a glance classifications are important to have and why or why not. That will be worth 5 points. Also, homework is on the board and should be completed and turned in by next week."

Lesson 2:
What is a Beast?

"Hello! Before we start learning about the beasts we so love, we must first learn what a beast really is and why certain creatures are classified and others are not. You may take notes, though it is not required."

She smiles, clears her throat, and begins. "The term "Beast" has been debated about many times throughout wizarding history, in fact, it took approximately 300 years just to find an agreeable definition. Why so much debate? Well, there are many reasons, as one example the werewolf. The spend most of their time as humans, so would that make them a beast or not? Similar situation for the centaurs. They refuse clothing, live in the wild, and prefer not to live near humans, but they have an equal intelligence to them. Trolls may bare humanoid appearance, but they they are less intelligent and they have no magical powers except their unusual strength.

Once you identify the many differences between these creatures, then you must identify which are "beings" and which are "beasts". A "being" is classified as a creature worthy of legal rights and a voice in the governance of the magical world.

The first attempts at deciding the magical creatures that should be classified as "beasts" were very crude. In the fourteenth century, Burdock Muldoon decreed that any member of the magical community that walked on two legs to be classified as "beings" and all others to remain as "beasts." When all "beings" were summoned to meet, things, well, didn't go quite as planned. There were Diricawls, Augureys, and Fwoopers. Pixies and Fairies. As well as trolls smashing the chamber and hags looking for children to eat. After the horrible experience Muldoon never attempted to integrate non-wizard members of the magical community into the Wizard's Council.

It was later attempted to classify "beings" as any creature that could speak in human tongues, but the result was also disastrous. I will not go in to more detail, but more can be found in Fantastic Beasts and where to find them.

Finally in 1811 acceptable definitions were found. The newly appointed Minister of Magic, Grogan Stump, declared that a "being" is "any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws". There have been a few exceptions of course. The spirit division had to be created in honor of the fact that ghosts are "has-beens" and not "beings." Centaurs and merepeople have requested to be in the "beast" category. And also so very violent "beings" have been moved to the "beast" category because of their violet nature. These include Acromantulas, manticores, and Sphinxes. Unfortunately werewolves have been shunted between the Beast and Being divisions for many years, but we will learn more about that later." She finished with a heavy breath.

CoMC II

Lesson One:
Werewolves
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

"Unfortunately, today is just a lecture, but it is on a topic a lot of people seem to be interested in. As mentioned before Werewolves are very debated upon creatures. Not only have they been switched between the being and beast divisions for many years, but offices are also placed in the different divisions. There is an office for Werewolf Support Services at the Being Division whereas the Werewolf Registry and Werewolf Capture Unit fall under the Beast Division. Werewolves are very misunderstood by many witches and wizards for many reasons. One is probably it rating of XXXXX. This scares many people, but what they might not realize is that this classification refers only to the werewolf in its transformed state. When there is not a full moon the werewolf is, of course, as harmless as any other human. But those who realize this may be afraid because of the werewolf's unique preference to human prey. But maybe they fear them because their is no cure, and they do not want to be bitten and then have the 'disease.' One other reason may be, of course, the actions of other witches or wizards. For example, Dolores Umbridge was instrumental in the passage of restrictive anti-werewolf legislation that made it almost impossible for a werewolf to get a job."

Professor Moonshade pauses, then continues by saying, "Now, that is just some debate about werewolves, but I think now we should move on to facts about them. Werewolves are found worldwide, but it is believed they originated in northern Europe. The only way to become a werewolf is by being bitten. There is no known cure, but recent developments in potion-making have created the Wolfsbane Potion, which lessens the worst effects. As you probably already know, once a month at the full moon, a wizard or Muggle werewolf transforms into a murderous beast that loses all human awareness and will attack anyone, including the werewolf's best friends. A werewolf can be distinguished from a true wolf physically by several small distinguishing characteristics, including the pupils of the eyes, snout shape, and tufted tail." She once again pauses, then says, "Your classwork is to tell me a little bit about your opinion on werewolves, it should be at least three sentences and it will be worth 10 points. Thank you, and homework is now up."

Lesson 2:
"Ashwinders are created when magical fires, such as those that have Floo Powder in them, are left unattended for too long. They are thin, pale serpents with glowing red eyes. After they rise from the embers, they slither into the shadows of the dwelling that they find themselves in, leaving an ashy tail behind. Ashwinders live for only an hour, in which time they lay their eggs then collapse in to dust. The eggs are a brilliant red and give off intense heat that will ignite the dwelling within minutes if not found and frozen. Once frozen, the eggs are valuable for use in Love Potions or can be eaten whole as a cure for ague." She finishes with a nod and points to the hut. "For this lesson, we will be heading in there." They head to the hut and the professor opens the door, revealing a green fire in the fireplace. "I have provided just enough time for a Ashwinder to come out and lay it's eggs, and it's your job to find the nest and freeze the eggs with a Flame-Freezing Charm." With a flick of her wand, the green fires goes out, and she adds, "Good luck!"

Classwork: RP how you would find the Ashwinder nest and freeze the eggs! (Worth 5 points)

Lesson Two:

Runespoor
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Professor Moonshade smiles as you approach. In her hand is a cage that contains a single three-head snake with livid orange and black stripes. "Here with me today is a Runespoor. These fascinating creatures originated in the small African country of Burkina Faso. They grow to be a length of six or seven feet, that, combined with their bright color, makes them very easily spotted. The Ministry of Magic in Burkina Faso has designated certain forests unplottable for the Runespoor's use.
"Runespoors aren't particularly vicious, rated at XXXX, but Dark Wizards often liked to keep them as pets. Due to the help of Parselmouths that conversed with Runespoors, we have been able to learn much about them. Each of the Runespoors head serves a different purpose. If you were face the Runespoor," she says and turns the cage so you are in fact facing it. "The left head is the planner. It decides where the Runespoor will go and what it will do next. The middle one is the dreamer. It often causes the Runespoor to remain stationary for days on end, lost in the middle head's glorious visions. The right head is the critic and will evaluate the efforts of the left and middle heads with constant irritable hissing. The right head has extremely venomous fangs. The Runespoor rarely reaches great age, for the heads tend to attack each other. It is common to see a Runespoor with the right head missing, the other two heads having banded together to bit it off.
"The only known magical creature to produce eggs through its mouth is the Runespoor. These eggs are of immense value in the production of potions to stimulate mental agility. A black market of Runespoor eggs and in the serpents themselves has flourished for several centuries."
She puts the cage down and says, "You classwork is to observe the Runespoor write down your observations. Then, write a sentence or two on your opinion of the Runespoor."
