Any Monkey fans? (I'll be surprised if I'm not the only American familiar with the show...)

If you were able to catch the original English language airing of the show, then chances are you are old enough for the Gaian Geezer's Guild! No, I only know about the show because of the Internet. But I am 24.

It was a Japanese drama based off the Chinese folktale, Journey to the West. The English dub opened like this.

In the worlds before Monkey, primal chaos reigned.
Heaven sought order. But the phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown.
The four worlds formed again and yet again, as endless aeons wheeled and passed.
Time and the pure essences of Heaven, the moisture of the Earth, the powers of the Sun and the Moon all worked upon a certain rock, old as creation.
And it became magically fertile. That first egg was named "Thought".
Tathagata Buddha, the Father Buddha, said, "With our thoughts, we make the World".
Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch. From it then came a stone monkey.
The nature of Monkey was irrepressible!

The narration was followed by this song, which was in English (even in the Japanese version):

Born from an egg on a mountain top
The punkiest monkey that ever popped
He knew every magic trick under the sun
To tease the gods and everyone and have some fun

Monkey magic, monkey magic. Monkey magic, monkey magic.
Monkey magic, monkey magic. Monkey magic, monkey magic.

Monkey magic, monkey magic. Monkey magic, monkey magic.
Monkey magic, monkey magic. Monkey magic, monkey magic.

I am not familiar with the show, but I loved the book! Read the english translation by arthur waley. Pigsy is a character I use sometimes in RP.

THIS THREAD WILL BE MOVED TO THE MOVIES, BOOKS, COMICS DISCUSSION SUBFORUM IN A FEW DAYS.

I don't know of that particular show. I don't know about The Monkees which is about the band The Monkees and their crazy adventures, they would typically have one of their songs in the show. It was pretty okay lol. My mom loved the show and band.

The English version of the show was only aired in the UK and Australia. I could have sworn there were UK/Australian Geezers. sad

If you're curious about the show, the UK distributor has an American box set out.

i would say the closest thing America had was the Kung Fu tv series with David Carradine:
