OK, I grew up watching the original series, and I have to say I don't feel very good about them reinventing that crew while the original actors are mostly still around.
Star Trek was my very first fandom when I was a kid back in the late 60's-early 70's, and I was an avid follower of the movies when they started coming out. I like the other series, but I'll always be very fond of the original show and it's actors. They sent me down the slippery slope of SF fandom! mrgreen

So tell me--are there any others here who are like me?
Are you going to absolutely avoid the new movie?
Did you give it a chance, and if so, what did you think?

Everyone's opinions are welcome, but I'm really hoping to hear from some other 40-50+ age Geezers who watched and loved the original series.
I'm trying to decide whether to try the movie...but I've just heard a disturbing hint about big changes to Spock, and that doesn't sit well with me one bit..... stare

My father was a Trekkie, and a Who-fan, but missed some of the later TV series of Star-Trek - I don't know how well he'd have liked those. I wish the Hollyweird writers would come up with an original thought and quit messing with what they now consider "classics which can be improved on." stare

Needless to say, I hadn't planned on watching the new Indiana Jones but was unfortunately subjected to it when the kids brought it home. I like the kid that was on the show in other things he's done, but wish they'd left that one alone. I didn't go see the Dukes of Hazard remake, and I'm not planning on seeing the new Star-Trek.

I'm not that old, but I have seen all the movies of the original series {not the series itself, though}. Some problems I can tell you about them using the cast from the original series in a new movie is the fact that the actors have aged quite a bit and might not be willing or able to put in the kind of work new movies demand, the actors themselves may not be willing to continue on the franchise {as some actors get tired of playing the same role and want to move on}, plus DeForest Kelley {Bones} and James Doohan {Scotty} are deceased. Bones is a big part of Star Trek... I can't imagine them trying to put a movie together with all the other actors and leave out Bones, and of course no Scotty wouldn't make sense either.

I haven't seen the new movie, but I plan to with my spouse and father-in-law. My father-in-law used to be a trekkie and he's actually looking forward to seeing it. Someone I know from another message board is a trekkie and he saw the movie and loved it, but the fact that he's a young trekkie {I believe he's 19} might also change the way he views the series.

I don't necessarily think it's bad that they made this movie, but I do agree that Hollywood needs to find some creativity instead of trying to bank off of remaking or adding poorly thought out sequels to old movies and tv shows.

I want to see the new movie but I'm a little unsure about it.

Star Trek is one of those shows that is so well established that going back and trying to reinvent it could go horribly wrong.
Thing is though, they're doing it to bring the franchise to a younger audience, the new audience. If the film is no good to the Star Trek series, it's only going to be the die hard fans that feel that way.

Most people these days won't have watched Star Trek, the original series anyway.

I think it could be a good film. But I really don't like the idea of them reinventing it just to please younger fans. If they wanted to make a prequel Star Trek film, they should have stuck to the original story.

They have expanded the Trek universe so much over the years, shown so many other crews, that I can't see any reason not to go ahead and create a new group, show them in the Academy or in their early careers, meeting and forming bonds just as the other crews have, and building on that as the movies progress. They want a Vulcan not like Spock? Then GET ANOTHER VULCAN WHO ISN"T SPOCK! rolleyes

I know the original actors almost certainly won't be returning to their roles again on screen, but I don't think that's any excuse for shoving their performances aside and literally replacing them in their own iconic roles.
NOBODY is going to get the Kirk/Spock/McCoy chemistry again. Forget the fact that the original series sets and special effects are dated now, it's the characters and stories that keep them watchable, just like classic Doctor Who!

I saw the movie and while it was good, it doesn't feel good enough to watch again in the theater. Up in the air honestly about buying it or just renting it when it comes out on dvd.

the performances were good but I've seen so much Star Trek stuff over the years that honestly I'm burnt out on it. It was declared that the old stuff is done and a new telling of it started with this movie. Maybe because I'm looking forward to other movies this summer...

I've only seen a few episodes of Star Trek, not sure what. I came into the movie not knowing much of anything. I think the movie was a success for those who know nothing about the series. After watching the movie, I want to see more Star Trek. I went to see the movie with a few Star Trek fans, and they really enjoyed the movie. I'd say give it a try, you might be surprised.

I've watched quite a few episodes of the classic series and I absolutely have no idea why it went off the air early. The show is fantastic.

Now granted, I'm not that old, but I want to see the new movie just because of curiosity. I want to see how they're gonna try and reinvent what the classic actors got right. I just hope that this is the "remake" they do. No sequels. They should be happy with whatever this movie pulls in and call it quits.

I grew up with the original Star Trek and I could accept them having to replace the crew (they're what -in their eighties at this point? eek ) so that's not what bothers me about this movie.

What bothers me about this movie are two things:

1)A 25 year old starship captain who goes directly from cadet to captain. WTF? Can't suspend my disbelief for this one folks -it sends my bullshit meter to red alert Big Time

2)The enterprise looks like a**. Total, complete a** -the bridge looks like some bullshit glossy imac bunch of s**t. They had to update the design (because who -in this day and age- would buy them using dials and nobs in the future), but the specific design that they did come up with looks too ...crappy. They should have stuck to the general color scheme and design of the original series and just updated it more subtly instead of making it look like Star Trek The Rave Generation.

Apart from that, I've heard the story in the movie is pretty weak -but no weaker than ST V; but I skipped V too (the last one I saw was First Contact).

I liked Star Trek and all, but I loved Star Trek: The Next Generation! I actually own the entire series on DVD. Yeah Hollywood are doing alot of remakes of old shows but some were pretty good ( Transformers, Xmen, Batman, The Incredible Hulk: latest version) and some...sucked on ice ( Superman, Inspector Gadget, Herbie the love bug)

Okay, gotten off topic, sorry. So will the new Star Trek be any good? I'm going to see it cause I heard alot more good than bad from most people. Depends on how much is a movie ticket worth to you?

Well, We not only lost James, and Deforest, but also Majeel Barrett-Roddenberry, just last December. She played Lt. M'Ress, Nurse (and later Doctor) Christine Chapel, Loxwanna Troi, and the Ship's Computer voice as well as being Gene's wife. I guess she passed away 2 weeks after the end of filming. She was only one of two actors to participate in every Star Trek TV series, Movie. Leonard Nimoy was the other one.

I would like to see the movie when I can. Yes, I am a Trekkie geek. emo
