I want to start collecting Tau

I'm going to have the colour scheme a little like this:

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

But instead of the brown have either Chaos Black or Ice Blue

Question: What colour undercoat should I use?

Well that depends, if you can get the spray gun, do it in a light grey, that's make it easier to do the black cloth and then do the armour in white.

If you can't get the spray gun then do the base coat in chaos black, it's do the cloth and shading for you, but you'll have to paint the white on in serveral coats.

I'd spray them black, and get the lightest gray foundation colour, 1-2 layers should be enough, and then adding skull white, no needs for several layers then.

actually..... i was kinda thinking of doing my tau mostly white... theyre pure pure black atm, side from some mild highlights (light coat of red in spots, so easily painted over)

would it be easy to paint them white? or would i be better of re-priming them with the skull white primer?

if i can leave it black, and paint on the white, what do yall think would be the cooled cloth color? im kinda liking the brown, but i only have the foundation paint brown, forget what its called, and snakebite leather....

It all depends on how you paint them.

Being a fan of the foundation paints I say the same thing as I said in my former post, it's the best way of painting white since then you won't need several layers for it to cover the painted area plus you can get a slight shading if you want.

In my experience painting white onto black based model is a b***h and an f'ing half! I haven't tried it myself with the foundatio paints, so i can judge on that, but with the normal paints I'd re-prime them first.

Also, so what if you only have foundation brown and snakebite? That's plenty enough to make a good cloth brown colour. I bought the starter pint kit, and since then I've only bought 2 extra colours and some refills, and made every thing in between by mixing. You want brown cloth, go for it my son!

I would primer w/ white then go over that with Astronomican Grey then star using some white and ice blue.
