I love Science Fiction, although I have to admit that I can rarely find my perfect blend of Sci-fi and romance. Usually it's heavy on one end and too light on the other. Ugh.
But Sci-fi is my favorite, mainly because the stuff in Sci-fi is able to be real in the future. I've been alive since before cell phones existed, and NOW look at them! When you think about it, it's truly amazing. ^.^

A good sci-fi story is a thing of beauty. But, I rather dislike it when they focus too much on the technology and not enough on the characters.
And I really can't stand 99.99% of the permutations of "OH WOE THE WORLD IS A DYSTOPIAN [pickaword]-cracy of WOE." STFU and pick another topic XD.
My favorite sci-fi author? Hagio Moto.

I hear you on the technology stuff. I have to weed through the tech-heavy books in order to grab up the good stuff. It usually means I'm sitting for hours at the local Borders, reading through the first chapter of all the sci-fi novels I can reach. It takes forever. crying
I've never heard of Hagio Moto. What is his stuff about?

Heh, the sad thing is I remember when the radio telephone was "the thing" not that many could afford it. It actually looked like an old time phone and was hard mounted in the car. Heck the first cell phone I had was a bag phone.
I prefer Sci/Fi that has believable technology. As much as I occasionally enjoy the old Sci/Fi where the star drive just "got you there" and the author didn't get into depth with it I like to have a reasonable idea of how it might work.

Agreed. I think of it this way: Most human beings know how to simply maintain a car engine. Oil, Gas, Water. Other than what we need to know about it, we don't know how the details work.
Science fiction technology should be like that. Just like Fantasy, "just because" doesn't cut it, but I don't want to know the deep details of how a ray gun works. I just want to know how to work it. wink

Hagio Moto's sci-fi is mostly about the effects of technology on fairly ordinary humans. You could almost take the futurism out of her books and they would still be awesome.
But one would expect no less from the woman who invented shonen ai XD.
Double Amen, Sugar. DOUBLE XD.

Savin - Lol, she invented shounen ai?! That's impressive. I'll have to check her out, I'll probably hit up borders today. And look around for her.
And speaking of such, does anyone have any good, action-packed, romanced-involved science fiction books? I'm in a dry spell again, I can't find anything that's catching my interest.

Yes! Really!
As a manga genre, anyway. Look up "Thomas's Heart'.
You know, I don't remember the last time I read a sci-fi book that I ACTUALLY LIKED O_O;;;.

I sat down and watched all of Firefly today. I'd say that's the sort of sci-fi I like. It's actually inspired me to write a genre I've never tried before. I even have a character all worked out, with background. Nice eh?
Sort of scary though.

The show or the movie? I always liked the show, if only because we need(ed) more sci-fi westerns.

The show, in it's entirety of 14 episodes. I'm watching the film later though.
And now we have a bit over five pages of somewhat strained sci-fi. I can come up with the inner workings of any sort of magical system, but I seem to struggle with sci fi. Especially as I don't want to be copying anything already done. So say hello to vague ideas! I have managed to come up with a functional design for the space ship though.

I love Firefly! It's one of my favorite programs, and I was SO UPSET when they canceled it! Stupid Fox and their canceling good-freaking shows. stressed scream
Anyway, Firefly is a great show, and I'd be lying if it didn't inspire me. Sometimes when I write my story I find myself gravitating closely towards the firefly world, it's a struggle to stay original (as original as anyone can be, anyway).
And Savin! Read Enders Game by Orson Scott Card! I PROMISE that you'll love it! PROMISE.
Promise.
