- Marauder's Guide to Role-Play -Welcome to Hogwarts! Here eager students study to become full fledged witches and wizards, school staff patrol the corridors, and house elves do their best to keep the castle pristine and full of well fed residents.
[Marauder's map to be added, anyone interested in making one please PM Professor_Adonis]
This subforum is home to many different Hogwarts locations. The first post of each thread gives a little description of its setting for your convenience. Members may also create their own separate RPG game threads here. Separate RPGs are indicated by the asterisk (*) in front of the thread name. Read the rules (Post 4) before creating a new RPG.
Avid role-players may use this thread to brainstorm ideas for plots and RPGs. -Please- don't add new Hogwarts locations without permission from a guild moderator. Thank you.
House Elves All new members start as house elves. You are not allowed entry into House common rooms, but you can venture into other parts of the castle to perform your duties. Visit The Giggling Pear for more information on house elves.
Students Once you are sorted, you can enter your house common room, and role-play as a student throughout the rest of Hogwarts.
Other role-play positions are available, but you must meet certain criteria in order to gain them. These positions are reserved for sorted members only:
Professor Teach students in Halls of Learning in order to role-play as a Professor. School Nurse Submit a request in The Hospital Wing. Include your role-play name. Librarian For Graduates only. PM Professor_Adonis if you're interested.
If there is a school position you wish to role-play here that hasn't been mentioned yet, ask about it in the S.F.Q. (Suggestions, Feedback, & Questions). There is also a mini-guide of all the places at Hogwarts to help give you ideas for your role-plays.

- What can you do "Around Hogwarts?" - We promote a friendly setting for members who are new to role-play, so anyone unfamiliar with role-play can fit in. As such, each common room, as well as The Giggling Pear, are always Casual role-play settings for your convenience (see Role-play Styles for details). Throughout the rest of Hogwarts you may be expected to role-play for the sake of atmosphere. Any area that requires role-play will have the sentence This thread is for role-play purposes. at the end of it's first post.
- Role-Play Terms - RP - Role-Play Role-playing is just like playing pretend. In this subforum, everybody gets to pretend to be their own character. House elves get a chance to role-play as house elves. Students get a chance to role-play as students. Teachers get to role-play as... well, you get the idea, right?
RPG - Role-Playing Game A game with role-playing. "Around Hogwarts" is one such game that involves several different thread locations. Your character can move into one thread and out into another. Be aware that you can also post in two different locations at the same time, so be careful that you don't move your character from one place into an area where you already "exist", there can't be two you's in one place, that'll just be confusing.
Threads with an asterisk (*) at the beginning of the name are RPGs separate from HPGoG's "Around Hogwarts" universe.
OOC - Out of Character The term refers to speaking out of character. Usually this talk happens when there is some confusion about what is happening in the role-play plot or if someone simply wishes to comment on something outside of role-play. OOC words are usually indicated by placing the acronym before the words...
Quote: OOC: Heyy... what does that word mean? Cute avi btw... ...or encasing the words in double parentheses or some other kind of obvious boundary...
Quote: (( Heyy... what does that word mean? Cute avi btw... )) [[ Heyy... what does that word mean? Cute avi btw... ]] ...You could also mix and match...
Quote: (( OOC: Heyy... what does that word mean? Cute avi btw... )) It really doesn't matter how you do it so long as it indicates the words being out of character.
IC - In Character The opposite of OOC. In Character is when you are role-playing. If a group is currently having an OOC conversation, a person may mention the acronym to indicate that they are going back to IC mode.
PC - Playable Character This is the character YOU control. Generally it is your main character.
NPC - Non-Playable Character This term refers to characters that cannot be role-played by anyone else. In this guild everyone controls their own character creation. No one else can control your character without your permission. Also, you cannot role-play outside your guild position. If you're a house-elf, you can't role-play as a student or a teacher until you get sorted and/or apply for a teaching position.
The term also refers to any extraneous characters a role-player may introduce to his role-play in order to move the plot along. Only the role-player who introduces this character can control this character unless he says otherwise. These NPCs tend to be temporary and come and go as role-players please. A good example of these NPCs would be a student's pet (owls, cats, dogs, etc.) or a character's family members.
- Role-Play Style - Casual Technically, this is not as much a style as it is a lack of style. Casual role-play within HPGoG has very little rules... or none at all. In fact, more often than not, the casual role-play areas of this subforum dissolve into chatterbox conversations. There may be a bit of role-play here and there, but overall, the people in a casual role-play area neither wish, nor need, to take the role-playing seriously. Frequently, IC drifts into OOC without any indication. A person may role-play study habits or bouncing off walls, but other people can and will break the 4th wall constantly.
House common rooms are Casual role-play areas.
Symbol Indicators Another kind of role-play style requires the use of symbols to indicate which words are dialogue, and which words are action. Often role-players use key symbols like the asterisk ( * ) or double colons ( :: ) by surrounding their actions with them like this:
Quote: *lights a match* :: lights a match :: In HPGoG role-players are not restricted when it comes to choosing what key symbols will indicate their actions. As long as the action words are made obvious, role-players can use whatever key symbols they wish.
Point of View Role-play is usually done in either 1st person or 3rd person, though, more often than not, people choose to use 3rd person. Here is an example of the difference:
Quote: 1st Person: *I light the match* 3rd Person: *Professor Adonis lights the match* *He lights the match* Many times role-players will simplify the 3rd person version to role-play without mention of name or pronoun:
Literate This role-play reads like a book especially if people use quotes for their dialogue, ( "To be or not to be..." ) while all other actions are worded in sentences. There are some who feel that Literate style tends to allow for a more descriptive role-play, which can elongate into paragraph descriptions of characters, actions, and setting.
Some RPG theads here may require the use of descriptive role-play, but this is not a requirement "Around Hogwarts".

- Hogwarts Residents - As you stare at the map before you, you notice several labeled moving pips indicating who is in the school at this very moment...
The following list profiles Hogwarts residents. To add your character profile here, fill out the following code, and post it in this thread. A guild moderator will add your profile to the list. If you are editing a current profile, use the same form, but leave blank the areas you don't want changed. Character Type: (House-elf, Student, Faculty, etc.) Is this a Profile Edit? Yes/No
Username: Info goes here Roleplay Name: Gender: Race (witch & wizard characters only): School Position (Faculty only): Appearance:
You may put additional profile topics in the code if you wish, but do not delete any of the pre-existing code from your post. If you do this, your profile entry will NOT be added to the list. Multiple characters must be placed on separate profile forms. So if you have a student character & teacher character, you will need to post 2 of the above coding in order to place them here. When you wish to remove your profile, simply post indicating which of your profiles you want deleted.

- Beyond "Around Hogwarts" -
If you do not wish to role-play "Around Hogwarts" or want to create a role-play with your own rules added, you may create one here in the subforum within your very own thread.
When creating your own RPG, be sure to keep the following questions in mind: arrow What kind of setting will it have (Time, Place, Post-book, pre-book, etc.)? arrow What kind of characters can be created (HP characters, creatures, students, teachers, etc. ) and how many can one person control? arrow What kind of role-playing is allowed (literate, casual, etc.)? arrow What are the rules? arrow How can role-players join the RPG? arrow Does this RPG already exist in the subforum? (if the answer is "yes", don't make it!)
If you want your RPG to be prosperous, make sure to address all these questions before your RPG reaches fruition. If your RPG breaks the guild rules in any way, it may be deleted. Ask a guild mod for help if you are not sure your RPG meets the guild requirements.
