Okay, so my friend and I were standing by a popcorn vending machine and he took some salt from it for some reason, and I said "that's poor quality salt." Then he kinda looked a bit offended and started to say something that sounded like "well you-" before he was cut off by a loud noise of some sort and he walked away. Before that we were having a conversation about economics and he thinks I'm all rich and can eat at fancy resturaunts he can't eat at and I can buy all the video games I want and he can't because he doesn't have the little extra money that my family does (and we don't even have that much anyway, just enough to not qualify for government aid, but he does.) We were talking about his country, which doesn't have the greatest economic sitatuation in the world, and he was talking about how hard everyone works over there and they take whatever they can get, and I said that I thought they deserve more for all the work they do and should get more money out of it. He just said "they take whatever they can get" and I said "they should get more". I meant that they should recieve more for the work they do but I think he misunderstood me. Then he said "well you can eat at that fancy italian resturaunt" and I said "barely, it's not even that good." He said "see!" and I said "what? you want me to take you because if I can I will and I'll show you it's not that great" (I meant that having money isn't always great, but I don't think he caught that) Then he just started walked quietly and took the salt from the maching, and I made the comment about "poor quality salt." I think he thought I was making a reference to his economic situation or his countrie's or something, all I meant was that it was low quality salt because it tasted terrible and made me sick last time I had it. I think he took it the wrong way. How do I walk up to him and explain all this without him hating me and walking away? And I really want to show him how I'm not rich and that money doesn't make you happy at all. The only reason he thinks I'm rich is because I'm "white" and my family owns some property we aquired in the 20's and 40's and we worked damn hard for what we do have. I want to show him that I'm not some lazy white person who hires immigrants to do the gardening just because of laziness and pays them 4 dollars and hour. I can do my own gardening, why would I hire someone to do it for me? How do I make this guy understand what I meant and not take it the wrong way?
